Bebek Kaleyo (Guest Post By SZ)

Restaurants specialised in duck are not common in Jakarta. We found a very good one, having various branches all over the town.

The one we tasted is the Tebet one. It looks like a big garage with lights, fans, and many tables. At lunch time, the restaurant was absolutely full : When a customer was leaving, another one came just after him.

The menu is very simple, you get your food very quickly and it is succulent and cheap (Rp.19.000++ for one portion of duck with rice). We tried bebek goreng (fried chicked) and bebek bakar (grilled chicken), and you can also add extra snacks like Tempe etc.

The place is clean, the waiters are nice and people eat with their fingers : Strongly recommended !

Café De Daunan, Bogor (Guest post by SZ)

The Kebun Raya Bogor is a big botanical garden situated in Jakarta's suburb. De Daunan is the main restaurant of the Kebun Raya.

De Daunan is an ideal place if you look for a relaxing open air restaurant in a nice atmosphere. Having lunch here can be an ideal break in your visit of the Kebun Raya.

The place is an old colonial house. Customers have lunch on a big terrace with many fans. You can eat traditional Indonesian food at affordable price. The food is good and the waiters are nice.

The place is strongly recommended and the restaurant by itself could be an interesting half-day trip from Jakarta even if you are too lazy to visit the botanical garden, because it is one of the rare restaurants in a green atmosphere easily reachable by public transports (train) from Jakarta.

Opening hours: From 10am to 10pm

Alcoholics Bar & Grill (Kemang)

Alcoholics Bar & Grill opened at the end of April 2012 next to KOI Kemang. The originality with the place is that everything sold on the menu has been cooked using Alcohol. Personally, I think the concept could be effective, but the name of the restaurant is too ambiguous and misleading. We will see how it goes, but I'm afraid it will not attract the right customers...

Bluegrass Grill & Bar

Bluegrass Bar & Grill is located next to Epicentrum Mall, off Rasuna Said street. A good place to meet other expats, it became popular quite rapidly after opening and it still is. The food is American: Steaks, ribs, burgers, wings, nachos, etc... Nothing very original and it is on the expensive side (similar with other venues like Union, Loewy, etc..). Surprisingly, I realized that there wasn't such a big offer in Jakarta for this type of food for those who expect a stylish design and decent quality. Along with the 24-meter bar, I think this is what explains part of the success of Bluegrass.

On the minus side, the service could be greatly improved, and in particular the friendliness of staff.

Overall: I recommend a visit once in a while for a casual, after-work eat.

Lucy In The Sky (Bar & Restaurant)

Located near Jalan Sudirman, in Fairgrounds (ex-Bengkel), Lucy In The Sky  is a rooftop restaurant/bar with an open-air garden terrace and a laid-back, close-to-nature atmosphere. The location of LITS is probably its best assets as it gives the feeling of escaping the city. Though in the heart of Jakarta's business district, it is surrounded with plants and flowers, which makes it relaxing, and a perfect spot to look at the skyscrapers around. Similar ambiance than SHY Rooftop but less expensive (80k for main dish) and with a better view.

Regarding the taste of the food though, there is still large room for improvement. For now, I advise you to stick with the drinks.

SKYE Bar & Restaurant (Menara BCA)

SKYE is the latest venue opened by the Ismaya Group, and for this reason, we can guess it will be the place to be in Jakarta for at least the next 3 months.

The Menara BCA has 57th floor and is 230 meters high. Located on its 56th floor, SKYE's main attraction will obviously be the view over the city's skyline. The history of rooftop bars and restaurants in Jakarta has shown mixed results, with most places now closed (Vertigo, Kampus, Pure, Cilantro, etc...). I wish more success for SKYE.

At the time of writing, SKYE is probably the most spectacular venue in Jakarta and this is why I recommend you to try it. Expect a fancy crowd, and of course sky-high prices...

Fable Club @ Fairgrounds (Jakarta)

Fable is a new club opened in Fairgrounds (ex-Bengkel). Perfectly located in the center of the city and with an underground vibe, it has the potential of becoming a favourite of Jakarta nightlife.

They've already had some interesting events in the past few weeks, with soul & hip-hop music as the main genre.

February, a reader of this blog sent me this interesting review that I'm sharing with you (Thanks to her!):

"I went to Fable on a Friday night. After reading the comment on this blog, I was prepared for the hostess to be rude and dress up to the nine. To my surprise, they were very nice and friendly and what more...free entrance.

I recommend the club goers to come after midnight because that’s when the party started. The music is mainstream R&B and hip hop. A little bit cheesy but the ambience is really nice: hardwood floors, sunroof top ceilings and cosy outdoor area.

It is definitely the place to go for those who like the friendly crowd of X2 but would prefer less-smoky and fancier club.

The crowd is mainly upper class Indonesians within young to very young demographic (early 20s). One guy told me he’s 18 (!) although I doubt it; he seems way younger than that.

Waitresses give away glow bracelets and necklaces to early birds and right after midnight, a number of hot and friendly hostesses swarm the dance party and make the party livelier. They pour shots of unknown liquors for those who don’t mind swapping bodily fluid with strangers (I keep thinking about the many mouths that shot pourer touches...but then again, it’s just me).

My friends and I ordered 1 bottle of gin and it cost us around 1.2 million rupiahs. I praise the waitresses and bartenders who are very helpful. The service is prompt and just right, not too intrusive. Based on my experience, one does not need to wait long to be served at the bar either.

Pet peeve: Wouldn’t it be nice if they actually make smokers smoke in the outdoor area? It’s just a couple of steps away. One can only hope.

Recommendation: dress up and be friendly.

Conclusion: I would definitely go back to Fable on a Friday night.

Beautika (Manado Food)

$

Beautika is the most reputed Manadonese restaurant in Jakarta, and my second favourite after Ikan Tude. It actually started as a beauty salon (hence the name), which was also serving some specialties from Manado. With time, the food became the main source of revenue for the owner and he finally opened a proper restaurant in 2001.

The food, as spicy as spicy can be, is mostly delicious and authentic. 2 problems: I imagine that the fish is frozen and I believe they do not serve pork. For these reasons, it won't save you a trip to Manado if you want to experience the original taste...

At last, it is way too expensive. My total bill for two people was Rp350,000, and we only had about 5/6 dishes to share.

Overall: I recommend Beautika for anyone who wants to try quality Indonesian food, regardless of the price, in a clean/hygienic setting. The atmosphere is rather functional: Tables and a TV, so I wouldn't advise it for a date or for important dinners.

Bar Hopping in Jakarta: 10 Great Routes

$
0
0
Jakarta nightlife, as I mentioned in previous posts (Jakarta Nightlife Tips), is best enjoyed if you explore a few venues on the same night, and it is preferable if those are close to each other (to avoid traffic). If you don't know Jakarta very well, I give you below 10 great bar-hopping routes. Some are famous, some are chic, some are dirty, and some are still unexplored... Anyway, follow one of them and I guarantee you a great time!

Blok M - For the Beginner
Difficulty:Easy, but be careful when you leave Jalan Falatehan, most taxis will overcharge you.
Transportation:Walking only
Highlights: Hectic street life on Jalan Falatehan, with a mix of beggars, prostitutes and fake blue bird taxis; Secret backroom in D's, Live band in Top Gun

Don't arrive too late and drink plenty of water beforehand. Start at 8pm, during the week (Wednesday or Thursday), with the bars that are located in the end of the street (Oscar and Maxi). After a few beer in those deserted joints, visit My Bar, Highway to Elle and D's Place, have a pause in Everest and Sportsman, then finish in Top Gun.

Jalan Jaksa - For the Tourist
Difficulty:Easy
Transportation:Walking only
Highlights: Live bands in Equal Park and Memories Café; Cheap beers; Friendly backpackers; Street food; Chatting with Paula, owner of Dyna Pub; Ladyboy spotting on Jalan Wahid Hasyim

The base camp for the Jalan Jaksa trail is actually on Jalan Wahid Hasyim: Dyna Pub, which has been around for ages, is not crowded but it is pittoresque. After that, you can have a quick look at Domares, 20 meters from it, and Embassy 21st (in front of Akhmani hotel). This bars are far from happening, but they are interesting because you will hear live bands playing old Indonesian favourites. On your way to Jalan Jaksa, you will see Melly's Garden on your left, with a nice crowd of young Indonesians, but stopping is optional.

Further east, at the crossing between Jalan Jaksa and Jalan Wahid Hasyim, you may stop in D'Consulate, a lounge popular with arabs. The elegant "Ocha & Bella" in Morrissey Hotel is noteworthy too if you want to meet some higher class Indonesians.

In Jalan Jaksa, most busy places are located around Margot Hotel: 3 bars should be on your to-do list: Equal Park, Memories Cafe, and Cocktail and Friends. If you still have time and/or need a drink, you may go to Ali's Bar, Venus, Obama Bar, and Pappa's Café.

The Jalan Jaksa trip can be undertaken any day of the week.

Kemang - For the below 21
Difficulty:Easy. Many venues have a First Drink Charge (FDC).
Transportation:Walking, but if you take a cab for a few short rides, you can extend to some cool bars.
Places to see:Within the "walking distance perimeter": Eco 365, Monaco, Elbow room, Tipsy, The Green, Attics, Nu China, 999. Optional, with a car: SHY, Beer Garden, Bremer, Eastern Promise, Venue (all of these to begin the evening), SF Club and Barcode (for clubbing, on weekends), Dim Sum Festival (to close the night)
Highlights: The irrespirable atmosphere in smokey Tipsy; Hearing electronic music until you become deaf; Watching the Indonesian youth getting hammered.

You should do this route on weekends since the clubs might be empty on weekdays. There is a vibrant nightlife in Kemang, but one area has such a high concentration of bars and clubs that you may spend a whole night there without taking a cab. You could follow this trail:
Start eating and drinking in Elbow room at approximately 10pm. At 11pm, walk about 200 meters to the right, and go to Eco 365 near Aksara. At this time it should still be quiet and "loungy", so don't hesitate to have at least a couple drinks. Around midnight, move to Tipsy, which should be already packed with students. If you cannot stand the smoke, go to Monaco, then head for Attics, Nu China, and finish in 999. Those venues usually close around 4am.

Senayan: "Hookers and Socialites"
Difficulty:Moderate. Expensive, you will have to pay at least Rp500,000 in entrance fees. Dress appropriately: No T-Shirts or torn jeans.
Transportation:Walking + Car
Places to see:Union, Red Square, X2, Domain, Portico, CJs. Optional: Hyu, Black Cat, Hacienda, KTV Boutique
Highlights: One of the best bar hopping trail in Jakarta because of the diversity of the fauna you will encounter.

Start with a karaoke in Hyu or KTV Boutique (optional), then have a drink in Union, or alternatively Portico. At 11pm, head to Hotel Mulia with a car (5 min ride) and stay in CJs until 1am. Then go to Domain (5min with cab) until 2.30am, then Red Square (walking 10 min or with cab, 3 min) and at last X2 (just in front of Red Square) which closes at 5am. In the same area, if you need more bars to warm up, you may visit Hacienda or Black Cat in Senayan Arcadia.

Sudirman to Hayam Wuruk: "From One World to Another"
Difficulty:Moderate, once in the North, you should be careful with taxis. Girls should dress with skirt and high heels if you plan on going to Immigrant.
Transportation:Mostly by car
Highlights: Very interesting route as it takes you from some of the hippest bars in Jakarta to some of the worst places the city has to offer.
Start in a classy venue such as Facebar or Social House, perfect to warm up. At 11pm, go to Paulaner Brauhaus or Hard Rock Café to enjoy live music. At 00.30am, Immigrant should start being busy... You can stay an hour or two because clubs in North Jakarta stay open very late. Before 3am though, head to Malio Club (not Malioboro Spa). Warning: This is a place with "sexy dancers" so anyone may not feel comfortable inside. Malio closes at 4am, so after that you should go to Millennium, only 300 meters from there. If you take a cab, try to get a Blue Bird or Ekspress, or pay Rp20,000 without hargometer.

Millennium is interesting because it is one of the largest disco in Jakarta, with an incredibly loud sound system. Inside the club, ask for the room with "western music" (music barat). When you're sick of Millennium, and depending on the time (if it is before 5am), you may still have the chance to visit a few places such as Illigals, Monggo Mas (scary), ML Disco (even scarier). There is also the very funny Mandarin singing hall De Volvo.

Stadium always closes very late (and it doesn't close at all on Sundays), so it is the best place to finish your route.

Lokasari-Glodok-Mangga Besar: "Holy Sh*t! Where Am I?"
Difficulty: Hard. You need to feel confident visiting club with almost no foreigners, full of drugs and prostitutes, sometimes dirty, dark and trashy. You will also need to walk at night in a reputedly unsafe area to go from one place to another and/or to find good taxis.
Transport: Walking + Car
Places to see:Golden Crown, Sydney 2000, Diamond, Sun City, Club 36, Super, Nuansa Permai, Siera, Exotis, Mille's, Mn'B
Highlights: Most venues you will discover are incredible and are highlights of their own.

You can start with a drink in the lounges of Sparks Hotel (Mn'B) or Golden Crown at 9pm on almost any nights. It is North Jakarta so expect some dancers between breaks. At 11pm, move to Sydney 2000 (walking distance from Golden Crown, 5 min taxi ride from Sparks). Sydney 2000 is pretty much hell on earth, and its nickname is the "ectasy factory": It will be so dark and loud that you won't stay more than 10 minutes. Once done, you can walk 5 minutes to Diamond Club, where you have live music again, and plenty of working girls.

More fun, Sun City is worth spending at least an hour, from midnight to 1am. Many foreigners from other Asian countries there, and a fun atmosphere most of the time. Don't stay too long though because you still need to visit 2 very local entertainment venues: Super Club and Nuansa Permai, both on Jalan Labu, to where you can just walk from Sun City. These venues are a bit old-fashioned, but very friendly: Do not hesitate to take the mic and sing some dangdut. When they close, you can stay in Jalan Labu and visit one of Jakarta nightlife's icons: The Club 36. This coyote bar features sexy dancers non-stop all night long until 5am, and it is always lively and crowded.

After such easy fun, you're ready for more hardcore stuff: Head to the crossing between Jalan Mangga Besar and Jalan Hayam Wuruk and ask for a club called "Siera". Locals should know about it (my review about Siera is not online yet). If you are walking, it should not take you more than 10 minutes from Club 36. It is a horrifying disco, with at least 500 persons high on drugs inside. Bring a torchlight because it is impossible to see even your hand. Once you are out of Siera, if you want to see another club just like that, you can take a taxi and go to "Exotis" (less than 5min). If not, then head to Mille's, the best nightclub for afters in Jakarta. Mille's rarely closes, so you're free to party there forever.

Pen-J: The Blok M of North Jakarta
Difficulty: Medium (Hard to find, very local, mostly bad taxis)
Transport: Walking only
Places to see:Sari Ayu, DV, LA bar, Astro, Royal, M Karaoke, MTR Club
Highlights: For those who wish to experience Indonesian-style male entertainment.

I must say I went to Pen-J only to take pictures from outside the bars, so it still needs to be explored. From what I could understand, many of these venues have live music or club music with working girls, and some rooms upstairs. Once you find the street with all the bars, it is extremely easy to go from one place to the other by foot. Here are some photos I took in July 2011:

Astro Massage and Bar
MTR Disco
L.A. Bar
Pen-J is not easy to find: You need to go to the main road, Jalan Pangeran-Jayakarta, in North Jakarta, and from there you should ask about the places mentioned above.

Mega Kuningan: Meet some fellow expatriates
Difficulty: Easy
Transport: Mostly by car with some walking if you know your way around
Places to see:Sports Café, Tempus (ex-Mistere), Loewy, Cazbar, Poste, Blu Martini, Apollo (Gay)
Highlight:Avoid the traffic.

Mega Kuningan is a bit like an island isolated from the continent: Because of the crazy traffic on Jalan Gatot Subroto and Jalan Casablanca, it is almost impossible to get out of it (or into it) at peak hours. So if you're stuck there, the good thing is that you'll find a decent number of drinking options. It never gets crazy though, but it is always friendly and perfect to meet other expatriates.

I would start the evening with Sports Café, with its fun crowd of regular patrons, for a couple of beers at 6pm. Then visit Cazbar at 8pm because they will often have events, and if not you can always play pool. Not later than 10pm, go to Poste (optional) or Blu Martini (optional) only if you are curious. If you want to meet other people, then head for Loewy, make friends there, and take the whole group to Tempus (Ritz-Carlton) to enjoy the live band. There is also a fantastic karaoke in Ritz-Carlton. At last, when the whole troop is intoxicated, head to Apollo, the most popular gay club in Jakarta. When you're done, there shouldn't be much traffic, allowing you to go home fast.

Little Tokyo: The Japanese Karaoke Experience
Difficulty: Easy, once you've found Jalan Melawai VII, near Blok M, South Jakarta
Transport: Walking only
Places to see: Tokishirazu, Flamingo, Geisha, Jawa-Jawa, Himeragi, U-Zou,  Cantik Jakarta, Chameleon, Club J, Don Sancho, Genji, Gokurakucho, Junko, M21 International Club, Maimu, Matsuri, Mitsubachi, Q-RI, Studio 21, USA-G1, Yujiro, ZII (all the Japanese karaoke in Jakarta available here)
Highlights:More than the karaoke, the atmosphere of the street is very amusing with all the Japanese signs and customers. You should also try the Japanese restaurants of the area such as Aji Hara, among the best in Jakarta.

The problem with Little Tokyo is that if you are not interested in karaoke, you will get very bored since there isn't a pub or a lounge. If you do like karaoke, you can probably do a 24-hour karaoke marathon in Jalan Melawai, changing venues every hour.

Having fun in Little Tokyo
Grogol/Daan Mogot: The unchartered Territory
When I came back home from the airport the other day, my taxi drove to a street with at least 10 bars and clubs next to each others... I was in a hurry so I couldn't stop, but the driver told me it was Daan Mogot, in Grogol. It is a bit far so I didn't have time to visit yet, but when I have time I will make a report for Jakarta100bars.com.

Jakarta Nightlife 2012: My Top Recommendations

$
0
0
For this year, this rankings of Jakarta nightlife's best venues are based on my personal preferences only. My criteria for assessing whether a place is recommended or not are varied, but most important of all is whether or not I'm having fun there. It all depends on the music, the people, the atmosphere, and the staff. What I generally don't care about is the design, the level of respectability, the presence or not of prostitutes, or the cleanliness.

My objective is not to give good and bad points, but to help you decide where to go or not in Jakarta if you want to have a great night out, not simply sip on a Mojito and stares at other people sitting next to you. I may not always be right, and that's why I would love to have your feedback by email or simply by commenting this post (very easy, no registration necessary).

Overall, the Top 20 Venues I would recommend in Jakarta this year:

1) Domain
Fun-loving, laid-back upper-class crowd. Eclectic music & events.

2) Immigrant
For a guy: The most beautiful girls go there. Period.

3) Stadium
Used to be my number one, but I'm getting older and I no longer have enough energy. Full of surprises, always something happening, great for anybody who likes underground clubbing.

4) CJs
Always crowded with an odd mix of businessmen, prostitutes, party girls, expats and tourists from the 5 continents. Good live band.

5) Mille's
The place to go after all the above clubs have closed.

6) Red Square
Still the favourite place for under-40 expats to find their girlfriends. Unfortunately, too empty during the week, too crowded during weekends.

7) 365 Eco Bar
Not crowded enough, but friendly and trying to be different, which is rare in Jakarta.

8) Beer Garden
Diverse crowd of Indonesian students + some expats. Usually good bands.

9) Tempus (Ex Mistere)
I've always loved Tempus (previously known as Mistere), in Ritz-Carlton Mega Kuningan, even though it is generally empty. Great centerstage and bands with top-notch service.

10) Burgundy
Most romantic place in Jakarta to have a drink, with a fantastic view on Bunderan HI.

11) BATS
Same that CJs but smaller and more western. Difficult to find a place to sit if you arrive to late.

12) Sun City
Grandiose club with perfect sound system, best enjoyed if you book a table with a group of friends.

13) MO Bar
Good DJs but the crowd not consistent. Can be excellent or boring to death.

14) Club 36
Always crowded, always lively until early morning, with non-stop strippers on the bar.

15) Millennium
The loudest sound system in Jakarta, always crowded and closes late. Since last year, it is playing more and more western music (used to be only Hardcore Techno).

16) Golden Crown
Opens late, the live music room is usually happening.

17) Malio Club
HOT HOT HOT

18) Dragonfly
Not as happening as it used to be, but still OK if you are lucky to go there on a good day. Still crowded with models & co.

19) X2
Not to my taste but still popular and interesting to meet you boy/ girl friend.

20) Blowfish
Popular with younger clubbers, mostly wealthy Indo-Chinese, and now specializing in hip-hop/R'n B.

I visited Otel Lobby just before Ramadhan, and was quite disappointed by the place. This lounge/restaurant was opened by a famous Indonesian socialite, Gaby Bakrie, the wife of one of the brothers of Aburizal Bakrie. As such, it is popular with Jakarta's richest.

We ordered 3 burgers (I wish we had tried more dishes but that's all that we wanted...) which were OK but the meat was rare, with blood dripping all over our hands when we were eating. My two carnivore friends had no problems with that, but I thought it was disgusting and could not finish.

The music was loud and terrible: Lady Gaga, Rihanna, David Guetta... The same you would get in X2 or Red Square, even though it was 7pm, in a restaurant supposed to be stylish.

The atmosphere of the place was dull, very un-happening. It was crowded, but the tables are so far from each other that it doesn't feel lively.

Overall: I will not return to Otel Lobby because even though it is expensive and pretentious, it fails to deliver on the basics. Just after our food was finished, we actually moved to nearby Bluegrass to have a drink.

Privé is the nightclub replacing Indochine. It is a mid-to-upper class venue, popular mostly with Indonesian but you'll always find a few foreigners there. The new management has been rather successful compared to the previous one, and the club has a good image and decent crowd on weekend. Expect mostly commercial music unfortunately.

Also comes with 2 restaurants, Mezza9 and Privé Kitchen Cosmopolitan.

Operational Hours :

Mezza9 : Everyday 11am – 11pm.

Prive Club : From Wednesday to Saturday (9pm to 3am, 4 am on weekends).

Located in Lagoon Tower, near Sultan Hotel, Qi Dine & Lounge is a restaurant coming from The Rych Concept Group (also behing Airman Lounge).

Qi serves fusion cuisine Japanese with a French twist. Favourites are the Smoked Salmon Parfait, the Surf & Turf, or The Rych Drunken Veal Check.

I haven't tried the restaurant yet but was contacted by the management to write a small text about it. Please do not hesitate to write your own comments on this blog about the place.

Siera or Pujasera Nightclub (Mangga Besar)

Jakarta nightlife still surprises me... The latest unexpected find was Siera which I had heard of before but never had the chance to visit... People also call it Pujasera, but I was unable to understand which name was the proper one...

Siera is located on Jalan Mangga Besar, about 1 kilometer East of Jalan Hayam Wuruk. It is not too difficult to find but you should be attentive not to miss it. It looks like a Roman temple, with a colourful lighting.

You have to pay about Rp20,000 to get in, and for this price you will get a small bottle of water. Inside is really crowded, until morning. The club is like a long corridor, maybe a 100 meters deep, with at least 500 people, maybe a 1000. If you were on the dancefloor at the end of the corridor and suddenly there was a fire, you'll have no chance to escape. It is very likely that 90% of the customers have taken drugs, and I would imagine that all girls in this place are working. As the price and facilities are quite cheap, it attracts a crowd of middle class Indonesian, with few Chinese.

The music is very aggressive and loud, and personally I couldn't stand to stay more than 10 minutes in the club. I took a few pictures, which are unfortunately quite dark, but I have a video that captures well its essence.

Overall: Recommended place for those wishing to explore the undergrounds of Jakarta nightlife. Also good for anybody who wants to experiment the contradictions of the capital of the largest Muslim country on earth.

Arabian Tent Café (Shisha Lounge)

Arabian Tent is the Arabic café next to the famous restaurant Al-Jazeerah (see my review about it on this blog here). To date, I can say this is the most authentic shisha lounge you will find in Jakarta. Most of the patrons are foreigners from various Arab countries (mostly Saudi Arabia), and you'll probably be wondering if you are still in Indonesia...

Overall: Arabian Tent is a good find. We just tried a tea and a shisha, both were very good. but unfortunately I didn't feel comfortable nor welcome there. For this reason, personally I would not go back.

I noticed that many Indonesian girls were there, I wonder what kind of relationship they had with the clients...

Eating Snakes in Jakarta

During a trip to Mangga Besar, I found those restaurants serving cobras in different forms (Sate Cobra, Cobra Soup, Grilled Snake, etc...). I was not really in the mood for trying but I took a few pictures...

If you are interested, they are quite easy to find, on the main street, approximately 2 kilometers east of Jalan Hayam Wuruk. You call also try this one more particularly:

Bubur Kwang Tung (Open 24-Hour)

Bubur Kwang Tung is an institution in Jakarta, especially for late-night clubbers. Open 24-hour and located in Pecenongan, not far from many nightlife venues, it is similar with Kamseng, located on Jalan Mangga Besar. It is mostly popular for its rice porridges (bubur in Indonesian) but it serves also a complete menu of Chinese (Cantonese) dishes.

We visited it well after midnight after a fun evening of exploring live dangdut café, and we were both very happy with the taste of our porridge. I was even surprised I liked the food so much as I'm normally not a fan at all of it.

Overall: A must-try in Jakarta, especially after a night of clubbing. If you are a celebrity, you'll eat for free and you can have your picture on the wall too...

Bobby D's (Kemang)

I haven't been to Bobby D yet, but it was recommended by a reader of Jakarta100bars. His comment was:

"Hi Thibaud, I'm in bobby D's now and haven't found a review for it on your site. It's a nice layout, apparently the guy that owns it is Australian. Had some food here which was quite nice.

The staff are quite friendly here too. They have a pool table as well...check it out :)
"

I checked their facebook (where I took the photos) and it looks like a simple place with quite many events of all kind: Salsa, Sports, Sexy Night, Cuban, live music...  The prices seem reasonable too... Probably a good restaurant and bar to socialize in Kemang...

Pad@28 Bar, Bistro & Coffee Corner

This review was written by a Max, a reader of this blog:

Located there, on the corner of Jalan Senopati and the road that takes you to SCBD, Pacific Place, SCBD Beergarden etc., lies a really nice restaurant called PAD@28. And I happen to believe that it is just about to make a big splash onto the gastro-scene of Jakarta.

There are a few reasons for this belief:

    1.    It is always buzzing with action. Weirdly enough, there aren't as many expats as you might expect from a place that serves duck confit, very well executed steaks, pork dishes (you heard me right - PORK, including a charcutterie platter) and really nice shots and cocktails. Mostly right now the clientel is still rich Jakartans in their late twenties and early thirties, with some 40+ people who still feel young.

    2.    The food is absolutely excellent. Whether it's a good-value-for-money snack at lunch-time (50-60k) or a real treat like an USDA steak (180-280k) all of their stuff is cooked with great attention to detail. Personally, I'm a sucker for their Duck Confit (89k).

    3.    The staff is really well-trained and the training manager really knows what she's doing, which is rare in Jakarta. Apart from Loewy, Union and a few others I usually find the service to either be to giggly and pushy or too lazy. Here, it's perfect!

    4.    The interior is pretty damn cool too. Downstairs, you feel like you're in the living-room of a hip NYC loft, while upstairs feels like a posh but unpretentious dining room.

So, there's my advice, check out PAD@28!
