Hyde (Kemang)

Hyde is a restaurant located in South Jakarta, in Kemang. As the name suggests, the place is hidden on Jalan Taman Kemang, the same street as Common People or Die Stube.

In terms of Western food, Kemang is the most exciting area in the city: It is the place to be for Chefs, new restaurants and trendy Bars & Clubs. . When something new is opening there, I am always curious and I want check it out. This is the case with Hyde Restaurant & Bar, which is still on soft opening. My first impression when I got in the place is that it reminds me of Loewy in Mega Kuningan, in terms of interior design and atmosphere.

It was not as full as in Loewy but I was cozy anyway. I had some cocktails (the Cocktail Menu is quite elaborated) and it was delicious and original. I did not try the food but it is mostly Western food and Asian fusion. The xXl Burger looks awesome and I definitely have to come back and try it !

The service was not the best I ever had in Jakarta... But I assume it is because the team is quite new and still need to acquire some experience.
Overall: Hyde is one of the new trendy places in Kemang nowadays. It is not that original since they copied the concept of existing venues, but I still invite you to check it. They need to be more active online though (website still under construction, I recommend their Instagram account Here).

ZEN Spa (Jakarta - Senopati)

I stopped by ZEN Family Spa & Reflexology in Senopati. It is quite a big Massage Place in the fancy area of Senopati. The Massage is located on the same street of  Le Quartier French Restaurant.

This Spa is originally a Spa branch from Bandung, where they currently have 3 outlets. This Massage place opened in 2011 and has been operating for ever since. It seems that there are more and more of those kind of Spas, very clean, with a great location and with affordable prices.

I had a Balinese massage there for 90 minutes. It was in a individual room with AC and the masseuse was very friendly and professional. The price for a 90-minutes massage was 199 000 Rp. You can choose between Jasmine, Lavender, Lemongrass and Sandal Wood. Unfortunately, there are no Jacuzzi and Sauna in the locker's room, which I usually like to use after a massage.

Here are the Price of the different massages:

Indulgence Foot Relaxing: 75 000 Rp for 60 minutes  / 99 000 Rp for 90 minutes
Back & Shoulder: 125 000 Rp for 100 minutes
The Royal Touch: 249 000 Rp for 100 minutes
Oil Free Massage: 199 000 Rp for 75 minutes
Balinese Relaxing Massage: 169 000 Rp for 60 minutes / 199 000 Rp for 90 minutes (recommended)
Face Therapy Massage: 50 000 Rp for 30 minutes / 75 000 Rp for 45 minutes

They have Happy Hour 20% Off if you come on weekdays between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

EatWell Restaurant (Bali)

EatWell is a tiny restaurant on two floors located on Jalan Raya Seminyak in Bali. It serves a relatively small Western menu of, surprisingly, unhealthy food: Burgers, steaks, sandwiches, etc... I say surprisingly because considering its name, I was expecting more healthy food, which was the purpose of my visit. Only later on I discovered they specialize in meats.

I tried a fresh orange juice (Rp30,000 +15%) which was truly fresh, made from imported oranges. I also had the Pancetta Sandwhich (Rp50,000+15%). The quality of the ingredients were good, but there was too much cheese for my taste as you can see:
Overall: I didn't get what I expected in EatWell in terms of healthy food, but I still enjoyed my meal. The prices are also very reasonable.

The restaurant is partly in the aircon, a not-so-common feature in Bali. However, it didn't have WIFI.

Bow Restaurant (Seminyak)

Bow is a restaurant serving various Mediterranean specialties, mostly from France, Spain and Arab countries (Bouillabaisse, Paella, Mezze). It is rather big and built on 2 floors, with a large alfresco area which is very enjoyable in the evenings.

The owner is a French man living in Bali. You can often see him in the restaurant. He takes a particular care of the decoration which is the thing that first attracted me to try Bow. As you can see, it is quite unique, with a Caribbean influence. I imagine he is also in charge of the music, which is a world mix of Spanish, French and African songs.

The prices for an appetizer go from rp35k to rp45k and for a main dish from rp75k to rp95k (to which you must add 16% tax & service). I took the Mediterranean Lamb Wrap at 75k++. It was really home-cooking style, with a fine taste but nothing too fancy as well.
Mediterranean Lamb Wrap (Rp75,000 (+16%)
Overall: I think Bow is recommended for a dinner in Seminyak if you are looking for a place more quiet than in the busy areas of Jalan Petitenget or Jalan Oberoi. As I said previously, the upstairs terrace is really nice during the evenings. It is not a fine dining place but I think it would be fit for a date.

One thing was a bit strange: The owner's dog was roaming free between the tables...

They also have regular live music events on Tuesday. I invite you to check the schedule on their facebook page Bow Bali for the latest updates.

Stadium (Jalan Hayam Wuruk) CLOSED

$

0

Update May 2014: The Jakarta City Administration has closed down Stadium following the death by overdose of a policeman who partied there.

Best disco in Jakarta for me, Stadium can be extremely crowded on week-ends and for special events. It has four flours, each supposedly with different themes but tribal techno/progressive is dominant. Stadium is big enough to get you lost and so dark you could not recognize your mom if she was dancing 1 meter away from you.

The atmosphere inside the club is unique: A melting-pot of human misery with an underground feel and with drugs and prostitutes easily available (just ask the waiters). You will find all kind of people partying hard in Stadium: taxi drivers, socialites, bosses, students, expatriates, etc...As it is open until very late in the morning (9am during the week, later during the weekend), it is where all the nightlife ends in Jakarta, once all the other bars and clubs have closed. It has the reputation of staying open 60 hours non-stop from Friday to Monday morning, but this is true only for the karaoke.

If you come for the music, you will need to go to the 4th floor, the famous "lantai empat". Most foreigners stay on the left of the podium, near the DJ. Many gays are just below and the rest of the dance floor is mostly packed with young people. On the corners, in the dark, dealers, prostitutes and pimps. Older clients usually go downstair in the karaoke room and take ectasy/shabu-shabu with some girls. The crowd is at best on Sundays afternoon I think, because many youngsters who do not have permission to spend the night out clubbing do it during the day.

Great DJs came here, in particular Ame and Luciano, plus some Ibiza DJ such as DJ Pippy. It is currently hosting more and more international DJs, at least once a month or two.

The owner of Stadium has a few other places, more specifically massage parlours and karaoke, namely MalioboroBeverly Hills and Sumo. It has also shares in the restaurant and club Kampus.

Our french blog has more photos and more infos about Stadium and nightlife in Jakarta: Click here! and click here!

Safety in Stadium:
As with other nightclubs in North Jakarta, most of the clubbers inside Stadium take drugs, in particular ecstasy. Beer is enough for me, but if you decide to take something stronger, you have to know about the potential risks. There are police raids occasionally, but the management of Stadium is usually informed before they occur and they can prevent anybody to deal inside its premises on these days. People can get caught more easily outside the club, and therefore you should be extremely discreet and you should not keep anything on you when you leave the building. The worst thing that could happen to you is having your urine tested, and it happened (see this news article to know more about drugs in Indonesia). If you don't take drugs, you can ask for a drink called Barracuda (Rp200k), which is known to be quite strong. The Cendana cocktail is popular as well.

4000 or 5000 people can fit in the whole club, but there is only 1 fire exit, so pray hard and nothing will happen. Pickpockets are another safety issue, with the primary target being cell-phones left in the rear pocket of your pants... you may be high, but others aren't and they are much aware that you are an easy prey..

At last, the taxis located just outside of the club should be avoided at any cost. Walk along Hayam Wuruk for at least 200 meters, then catch a Blue Bird or an Express.

Update July 2009: There were a few people injured and one dead in a fight that took place in Stadium. Apparently, the attack was led by a group of young people in white shirts who wanted to close down the place. In spite of that, I don't think it's unsafe to go there by yourself, the biggest danger you might encounter is being ripped off by a taxi driver.

Update March 2011:
As some readers commented, there are indeed some nude dancers in Stadium now.. I took a photo that I voluntarily censored:

I also have a good video, even though the place was not too full:

Some famous Stadium songs (from 2004-2008):
For the music, Stadium is setting the tone for most of the other discos in Jakarta. Some tracks are so easily identifiable that when they are played in other places, you'll see people go "Stadium song!". Here are some sample:
Runaway - Iio - played live in Stadium by DJ Mumuch
Till There was you - Rachel Starr - Gabriel and Dresden
Storm is Rising - John Creamer & Stephane K feat Susana
Habibi - DJ Mumuch
At The End - Iio (Couldn't find the Stadium remix though)
Stadium song unknown title A great one but can't find the name (or maybe Commisar Pro?)
Ecstasy - Stadium Jakarta remix
Desert Rose by Sting, Stadium remix Another "Ecstasy" song.
House of Voodoo - Shadows This one may not have started in Stadium, it's a bit more housy, but you hear it everywhere (the remix is not the original one but it's the best I could find).

Air Asia: Why it is the Worst Low-Cost Airline?

$
0
0

I am surprised that Air Asia can still get the title of "World's Best Low Cost Airlines" in 2013 considering it is by far the worst company and the one company I always try to avoid when flying in Asia.

It seems like AirAsia is so good with its marketing and advertising that people are brainwashed into thinking that they are receiving a 5-star service when flying with them. I hear people excited about taking AirAsia, when the truth is that they will pay more for sitting in a super tiny seat without any food or service and probably departing late.

AirAsia is more expensive than any other low cost airlines in Asia while it does not give back any thing to its customers. Obviously, they do cut on their services and operating costs but the money saved with this rationalizing is not used to decrease flight ticket prices, it is just more profit for the company. I applaud with both hands at how smart it is.

I would accept the level zero of service provided by AirAsia if they were more cheap than anybody else. This would be my reward for accepting such a shame service. But it is the contrary that happens.

My problems start with their website. It is the trickiest and most dishonest booking website that I have ever come across with.

If you use flight comparators such as skyscanner, you may have had this problem of clicking on an AirAsia flight because it seemed to be the cheaper options, and in the end realizing that when you add the taxes, the fuel surcharge, the luggages, the seats, the meal, the check in fee,  the payment fee, the priority seats, and the priority boarding, it ends up being more expensive than Singapore Airlines.

Avoiding to pay additional charges will require your full attention: For instance, if you don't want to have AirAsia Insurance, you have to refuse once, and then cancel your refusal. Tricky? Canceling your seats is so complicated as well that I booked them inadvertently at least 3 times... Same with the priority boarding that I forgot to un-tick...

Charging for additional fees is the specialty of AirAsia and its most lucrative business. They will find any possible way to make you pay additional fees. You want to add additional luggage weight to your booking at check in time? This will be charged beyond reasonable. You want a bottle of water on the plane? Take out your wallet. All other companies will give you something free even though they are cheaper: Lion Air for instance do not charge if you request a special seat and they allow 15 kilos of luggage for free. Sriwijaya will give you a free snack (very limited but still), Citilink lets you choose your seat for free, etc...  Within the price range of AirAsia, you can actually often fly with regular companies where the service is beyond any comparisons.

With AirAsia, no only do you get nothing free, you also get less for what you pay for (unless you pay more).

When you arrive at the airport, you will notice that AirAsia is the only company that forces you to check in with a machine instead of a human. If you do not check in online, you will have to pay an additional fee. The company would probably reply that it helps keeping its costs low and its prices lower, but the prices aren't lower. They are higher. It is an additional constraint on passengers that is increasing AirAsia's margin while not benefiting to the customers. Maybe one day Executives at AirAsia will find a way to make passengers clean the plane by themselves...

Let's talk about space now: I am a rather tall guy so I'm sensitive to the space between seats in an airplane. All low-cost companies are usually uncomfortable, but AirAsia beats all records. If you are more than 180cm and you didn't buy priority seats with extra leg space, your flight with AirAsia is a torture. You have to fold or squeeze your leg so that you will miraculously fit in the tiny space. If you are more than 190cm, I do not believe you can fly in those seats. If you are more than 190cm and you ever managed to fit in an AirAsia seat, please give me your testimony below.

AirAsia usually flies from and to second class airports, not the main ones. This is true in Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok. Those airports are low-cost with less comfort, less shops and restaurants, and more queuing and disorganization. If you have to connect to another flight, unless it is another AirAsia flight, you will lose precious time running from one part of a city to the other.

Air Asia is very very often late and it is not just a personal impression. Just have a look at flightstats.com. You will see that some routes like Denpasar-Jakarta are on time on average 29% of the time only... Try to get any kind of compensation or excuse from a delayed flight and you will understand what is the meaning of low-cost services...

At last, the flight attendant of AirAsia are obviously recruited on their generous looks and it makes for a pleasant flight if you are a male like me. In terms of skills and attitude, they are probably on average more snobbish and arrogant than with other low cost airlines. Comparing them with flights attendants from regular companies like Singapore Airlines is a blasphemy. In terms of skills, I am not so sure but you should probably wish that nothing goes wrong during the flight...

My conclusion:

Personally I always avoid AirAsia because I consider that they are priced as regular airlines while offering the lowest standard of low cost service.

Be smart when you book a flight and check what is the real final price you pay and what kind of service are offered.

I would say book with AirAsia only if you can get a real promo and if you are flying without luggage, and without any need for extra services. You may also be sensitive to the safety issue as the record of the company doesn't show any deadly accident (but you may want to read this article though: Accident with AirAsia).

Three Buns Burgers and Cocktails (Jakarta & Singapore)

$

0
Three Buns is the current trendy place in Jakarta (in May 2014). It was opened by the group behind Potato Head. The owners should write a marketing book and give it to McDonald's. They could call it: "How to sell fast-food 3 times its normal price?".

Three Buns is actually a very pretty and original place, with friendly staff and a unique concept. Unfortunately, because it is expensive, it didn't work for me.

It has no aircon, very limited service, no comfortable place to sit and a not so many options in the menu. Yet their cheapest burger costs over 100,000rp net.

The overall design is great and it is the best thing about Three Buns. It plays on a hipster trend with a raw, back-to-basics setting. There is good music and it is made so that everyone can see each other. When it is full, it must have a great atmosphere. I also think that they could organize events as the restaurants is shaped like an arena.

Now with the things I didn't like: You have to order your food at the entrance, then wait until it is prepared and you take it to your table yourself. It was not too busy when I visited so there were like 5 waiters/hostesses not doing anything, and they didn't offer to bring my food when it was ready. Even in A&W or KFC they do it. It only seemed to bother me so I guess self service is a new trend in Jakarta.

Then, the menu is super small: You have 4 burgers with a strange mix of ingredients, and a limited selection of drinks (especially if you don't want to drink alcohol). I took the Baby Huey burger, which was simply not good (and overcooked). It is as if they had randomly combined ingredients without tasting the final product. I'm sure some people will say it is the best burger they've ever tried, probably because they think the weirdest a dish is, the best it is. I don't think that way. If you like classic food with quality ingredients and perfect cooking, Three Buns is not the place for you.

The comfort of the restaurant is the last thing that made me want to leave. It was really hot and there was not aircon (apart from big fans). Actually, there is a huge aircon in the entrance, when you want to order your food. So upon arrival you don't notice the hell you are getting into. Once you pay, then you get to sit in chairs with tables that are not well adjusted. For a drink it would be fine, but for eating, you'd rather eat in a bench in a park (if Jakarta had parks).

Overall:  I still recommend you to try Three Buns as it is a fresh concept and as the atmosphere is busy. But personally after one try I think it is enough.

Ibiza is one of the few normal happening clubs in Northern Jakarta. When I say "normal", it means you can go with your girlfriend as it is not only drugs, dark corners and prostitutes. They do have sexy dancers though.

They have been running for over a year now and they have established themselves as the place to go after midnight in the Pluit area for those who don't want to go to the city center. It is rather big (1000 pax capacity) and open 6 days a week. The crowd is mixed Indonesian and Indo-Chinese.

It has regular events with DJs (all style: Trance, Electro, Rn'B), Dance Shows and Live Music. Check their facebook/twitter below for updates.

Motel Mexicola (Bali)

The Hype is there, in this place of Seminyak... You feel it as soon as you get in this Restaurant & Bar. First you have the decoration: How to describe it ? The owner of the place, Australian Adrian Reed, tried to imitate a 1960's Acapulco ambiance (in Mexico), with images of Mexican Wrestlers and "Dia de Muertos", the Mexican Holiday. It is very colorful and very impressive at first sight. When you look closely at it, it is mostly an accumulation of old objects, weird paintings on the wall and other decoration that doesn't make any sense.

The people who are going to this place are 90% tourists and expats. That is the case for all the hype venues in Seminyak. Basically all the people who stay in Potato Head Beach Club during daytime are coming to this place after Beach/Pool time.

The music is good and the place hosts many events since they have a stage in the middle of the Bar. I like to go there for a drink since the place is very open. Pricewise, count 500 000 Rp for a pitcher of Margarita (5 drinks). I don't need to mention the fact that you can go there wearing flip-flops, Bali Bintang tank top. It's Bali, you don't need to dress up to go out !
Overall: I would recommend this place to have a drink before heading to Jenja Bar & Club or Townhouse. I did not try the restaurant yet but judging from the prices it looked expensive. Try the Margaritas, they are refreshing.

Holycow! Steakhouse And Steak Hotel by Holycow! What Differences?

$
0
0
My title was voluntarily misleading. I don't believe there are true differences between both brands as they operate with the same concept. Both are chains of affordable steak restaurants which are lively, colorful and with a viral marketing all about Twitter and Facebook. They offer decent steaks, but it isn't the best imports or the best cooking you will find (except if you take their most expensive cuts).

Holycow! was opened by self-trained Chef Afit Dwi Purwanto (who worked previously as a manager on RCTI channel) and his wife Lucy Wiryono, a TV host. So far, they have 6 branches in Jakarta, 1 in Bali and 1 in Yogyakarta. Their menu is short and features Sirloin, Ribeye and Tenderloin steaks from Australia and US. They also serve Wagyu beef.

I visited the Bali branch which was very busy in the evening. Most of the customers were Indonesians, seemingly from Jakarta. I had the prime Tenderloin steak (imported from Australia) (91k +12,5% tax and service). It is the cheapest cut and it was just acceptable. I enjoyed it but I don't think it was worth more than its price.
Steak Hotel by Holycow! used to be part of the same group, but it is now owned and management by Wynda Mardio. There are as many differences between Steak Hotel by Holycow! and Holycow! that there is between each restaurants of each brands themselves.

Overall: Holycow! and Steak Hotel by Holycow! are recommended if you want a good value steak. You can alternatively try the following places that I enjoyed as well: Super Steak, Abuba Steak and Carnivor.

L'Avenue Restaurant (The Hermitage Hotel)

$

L'Avenue is the main restaurant of The Hermitage Hotel, a new 5-Star Boutique hotel in Menteng, located steps away from the antique market of Jalan Surabaya. The hotel was built in a historical colonial building, and they tried to reflect this heritage in the design of the restaurant. It is classic, full of marble from the floor to the buffet tables. The feeling of exclusivity is reinforced by the small size of the place, only 60 pax at most.

At the time of opening, the Executive Chef of L'Avenue, Chef Guillermo Varela Mata, was Spanish (with origins from South America). He created a menu with a strong French influence.

I had the Chicken Breast with Gratin Dauphinois (potatoes with cream and cheese). It is a dish from Southern France that I've eaten a hundred times in my life. The one in L'Avenue was not as good as the one my Grandmother makes, but still very tasty! The portions were too small for my appetite though. There is also a buffet where you can have both Western/French and Indonesian cuisine. The price of a meal is 220 000 Rp with 1 meal and access to the buffet.

I strongly recommend the pastry buffet, it is very delicate and definitely five-star choice.
Overall: Bring your Indonesian stepmother if you want make a very good first impression in front of her. She would love it !

Chez Gado Gado (Seminyak, Bali)

$

Chez Gado-Gado is a fine dining restaurant located at the end of Jalan Dhyana Pura in Seminyak, with a view on the beach.

It is rather expensive, about 200,000rp for a main course (with an additional 18% tax and service). They are part of the same group behind Ku De Ta and Cocoon, with a few foreigners among the management. In particular, the Executive Chef Quirijn Rademaker is from Holland.

The menu is rather small and features mostly gastronomic dishes. It gave me an excellent first impression. The friends who accompanied me were expecting Indonesian food (because of the name Gado Gado), so they were disappointed and I was the only one to eat.

I had the "Rogan Josh" Sea Bass (Rp 180,000++) and the Beetroot Salad (Rp 85,000 ++). The portions were surprisingly big but I didn't like both dishes. The salad had too much sauce and it had nothing subtle about it. The Sea Bass was hard to eat and overcooked. The sauce was a curry that tasted similar with the "rendang paste" from the warung next to my home.
Rogan Josh Pan Fried Sea Bass (Rp180,000++)
Beetroot Salad with Walnuts (Rp 85,000++)
The service was not very good as well. For instance, the waiter brought the bread/olive oil served normally as an appetizer only after the main course arrived. Then, after I finished eating, nobody came to pick up my plates for 30 minutes. I made a small list of all the anomalies I saw but I had to stop as it was getting too long...

There was also not a standard uniform for all staff. Some of there were wearing traditional clothes, some wearing t-shirts. One of them even had a Harley-Davidson polo. To be fair, I think it was a public holiday so this may be unusual.  Still it killed the fine dining mood for me.

At last, the environment is not as nice as I was expecting. The sea can be seen, but there is also a small road before it with motorbikes passing by every minutes. As you can see on the picture it is not an exceptional sight:

Overall: Chez Gado-Gado was a disappointing experience considering the money I paid. I will not go back unless they make some significant improvement in the atmosphere, food and service. For fine dining, I still prefer going to Metis restaurant for instance.

Wacko Burger Restaurant (Bali)

Wacko is a small burger restaurant chain with currently 2 locations in Bali (Seminyak and Jimbaran). I visited the branch of Jimbaran on a Sunday night.

The restaurant was not too busy as it had just opened two weeks earlier. The owner is Tino Sugiarta, a friendly Belgian from Indonesian descent. He welcomed us and took some time to chat as we were waiting for our food.

The menu features all kinds of unique burgers. We weren't in the mood for experiment so we tried an easy one, the Classic Hamburger with extra cheese and fries. It was cheap: 166,000 rp net for 2 burgers + drinks.
The taste was excellent, far superior to the one I experienced in the very expensive Three Buns in Jakarta.

Overall: Very recommended Burger restaurant, I just wish they can maintain the quality of food overtime. Hopefully they can open in Jakarta someday too...

La Favela (Bali)

La Favela is one of the trendy bars and restaurants in Seminyak in 2013-2014. It was opened by the same team behind the very popular La Plancha and the defunct La Barca (closed for administrative reasons).

I believe they owe their success to 3 key factors:
- Great design with an attention paid to every single details. The atmosphere they create is always unique and it is worth having a look even if you are not a party-goer.
- Strategic location in the heart of Seminyak
- A huge network among the expat community that enables them to organize happening parties just by posting a word on facebook.

On the downside, the food in La Favela was a bit disappointing for the four of us who ate. The Chef is Peruvian with most dishes Mediterranean or South American. Maybe it wasn't his day... With so many options in Jalan Oberoi anyway, it is better to go there only for a snack or directly for a drink.

Overall: Located in the heart of Seminyak nightlife area, La Favela is one of the must-try venues if you like laid-back, hipster places. It is quite messy so do not go if you are looking for a stylish night out.

Mozzarella Restaurants (Bali)

Mozzarella is a Western restaurant chain with 4 locations in Bali, all of them in the Kuta/Legian area. It is not an Italian restaurant as I first thought: It features mainly popular dishes for the tourists (pastas, steaks, salads, etc). On the day of my visit, I think that over 90% of the customers were Australian families.

I tried the branch they have on Jalan Padma. It is in the open-air, under a typical Balinese balé. The sitting was a quite uncomfortable as they only have wooden chairs or benches. I moved to a sofa area later on but the table was too high so it did not solve the problem. They have good music, not too loud, perfect for a dining atmosphere.

I took the Red Snapper with Cajun Sauce (Rp119,000++). It is not that cheap, and not that good (very oily). The portions were generous though.
Red Snapper with Cajun sauce (119,000rp++)
My dish came only 5 minutes after I ordered so I imagine they prepare the food in advance. It took much longer to bring me an orange juice actually. The end of my experience in Mozzarella was not good. I was trying to get my bill but it took at least 20 minutes to do so. The staff was friendly and fast except for that incident.

Overall: Average tourist restaurant. Recommended if you are a small group who want to eat classic food at a reasonable price (100,000 - 150,000 for main dish) in a clean atmosphere. Nothing really special here.

Sip Wine Bar (French Restaurant Bali)

Sip Wine Bar is one of the best French restaurants in Bali. It is located on Jalan Raya Seminyak, not too far from Jalan Dhyana Pura.

The owner/chef is Christian Vanneque, whose biography is worth reading (sip-bali.com/whos-the-boss/). He has a long career as a Head Sommelier in prestigious, Michelin-starred restaurants in France and abroad. I didn't have wine in Sip but it is certainly the place to go in Bali if you want enjoy an excellent wine pairing with your food.

The atmosphere in Sip resembles that of an authentic Parisian bistro. It is dim-lighted, old-style yet comfortable, with soft music in the background. There are tons of original ideas in Sip that I would recommend a visit to anyone who would like to open their own restaurants. One thing is worth noticing is the quality of the toilets, probably the best I have seen in Indonesia. They even have tampons for ladies "just in case"...

Talking about the food, they specialize in meat, particularly imported beef. They have a few set menus that make a lunch or dinner in Sip rather affordable (around 200,000 net for 2 courses). I had tried before a Rib-Eye, a few months ago. For this visit, I only had the Tagliatelles Provençales (95,000 rp +17% tax and service). The portions were medium, but the taste excellent. It is French home-style cooking 12,000 kilometers from Paris.
Tagliatelles Provençales (95,000rp ++)
Overall: If you enjoy French food and wine, there are few places where you will be happier than in Sip. The service was also excellent. Highly recommended.

Chicory Patisserie (Menteng)

I discovered Chicory Cake Shop & Café randomly while heading to Kuningan from my home. Located on Jalan Sumenep, in the heart of Menteng, they serve a whole range of European pastries: Tarts, croissants, almond combs, choux and financiers.

Decorated in an old-fashioned way with wooden bistro tables and chair, it really looks like a tiny "salon de thé" as we have in France. The Pastry Chef is an Australian and he is the one who makes all the pastries everyday. Chicory is surfing on the trend of the French Bakeries and Café recently opened in Jakarta like Paul Bakery in Pacific Place Mall or Eric Kayser in Plaza Senayan. This place is different as it is not a franchise. The quality standards are just as high in my opinion, just like the ones you could get in Europe or in other 5-star hotels in Jakarta. The price is a bit high though, around Rp50,000 for a pastry.

Overall: Chicory is a recommended neighborhood pastry shop. It is great for meeting a close friend or relative and talk for hours in a cozy and intimate atmosphere.

Bebek Tepi Sawah Restaurants

I visited the original branch of Bebek Tepi Sawah in Ubud a few years ago. I was disappointed at that time as it was expensive, overcrowded with groups of tourists, and the taste was really unexceptional. I blacklisted it in my mind and considered it a tourist trap.

In the past few years, the brand has opened outlets everywhere in malls in Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Bali. I thought that the management may have changed and that it would be worth having another try. I did so in Beachwalk in Kuta.

My first impression was not too good. I was greeted by an apathetic waitress that I felt I was bothering. She gave me the menu and left. It took me 10 minutes to get another waiter, more friendly, to come to me and take my order.

The menu features all kinds of Indonesian and International dishes with a large choice of drinks. It is so big that I cannot imagine the team in the kitchen is able to prepare them all correctly.

Since Bebek Tepi Sawah means "the duck from the rice paddies" I thought I should try the duck of course. The price was 96,000rp (+16% tax and service) for a half duck. The food brought was not better than the one I could eat in a warung for half that price. It was a bit overcooked actually and I still prefer places like Bebek Kaleyo or Bebek Pak Slamet compared to Bebek Tepi Sawah. I also took a "100% pure" orange juice (Rp20,000++) which had been diluted with water.
Roasted Duck (96,000rp ++)
Overall: Bebek Tepi Sawah is just a typical chain restaurant and there is really nothing special about it. I will not return unless I don't have the choice. It seems that the reason they were able to expand so quickly in Indonesia is by giving away franchise rights quite easily, which of course impacts the quality.

Pantarei Greek Restaurant (Bali)

Pantarei is a Greek Restaurant, Bar and Lounge located on Jalan Raya Seminyak. It is owned by 2 Greek nationals (among which Adonis Mantaras) who are also behind the Lio furniture shops.

There are three areas:
- A large dining room in the back which is not very well kept (dirty and messy)
- A bar/lounge which is much nicer, with modern, Ibiza-like décoration, and loud Café Del Mar music.
- A small terrace facing the street which is nice for watching people pass by.

They have a team of pretty waitresses and PRs that are one of the main reasons I was drawn to Pantarei in the first place.

The menu is a bit expensive, and features mostly Greek food. You also have some other popular Western favorites. I tried the Lamb Gyros (113,500rp + 15% tax) which was really excellent. If the price was under 100,000rp, it would have been perfect...

Live music twice weekly on Tuesday and Saturday.

Overall: Pantarei may be one of the best Greek restaurants in Indonesia currently (I also tried in Jakarta Yamas, Halo Niko and El Greco). I think the owners could improve the restaurant by renovating the main dining room.

Fitzroy (Senopati)

Fitzroy is a bar located in Senopati, just right after Le Quartier restaurant, on Jalan Gunawarman. It is a chilling place with a young crowd (22-25 years old), mostly Indonesians following the hipster/bohemian trend. I went there for a drink on a weekday and it was full.

Fitzroy opened at the end of 2013 and it is starting to be popular in the area. The manager told me the 4 Indonesian owners used to live in Melbourne and they wanted to create the kind of venue they could hangout inside for hours, here in Jakarta. Well the place is indeed cozy with some laid-back sitting areas and a homey decoration. The cocktails are good and not too pricey (around 95 000 Rp for a Mojito). I also tried the food, which is a bit better than the food you would usually find in a bar...

Overall: I recommend Fitzroy for enjoying cocktails and also for the food. The bar is located on the 1st floor of the building and you can take the elevator to get in (the outside sign is quite small actually).
