D'Heaven Hotel And Spa

$

Opened in 2012, D'Heaven Spa is a mid-range male bordello disguised as a massage parlour.  Located in Kelapa Gading area, it is popular with Indonesians looking for value for money treatments and relief.
Considering the crackdown on online prostitution currently happening in Jakarta, I was surprised that the management of D'Heaven is advertising the sexual services of its spa everywhere on the internet.

It is not hiding that the massage is always naked, that the client can "petik mangga" (touch boobs) and that with the proper "tip", you can get more than just a massage. According to the information provided on Kaskus forum for instance (in Indonesian), a HJ will require a 100,000rp tip, a BJ will require a 200,000rp tip and FJ will cost you an additional 300,000rp tip.
This is just for the tip paid directly to the girl. You also have to pay for facilities and massage itself of course. You have several packages to choose from:

Deluxe room + Massage: 264,000rp for 90 minutes (2 session, 90 minutes) with additional session of 45 minutes for 60,000rp

VIP room + Massage: 324,000rp for 90 minutes (2 session, 90 minutes) with additional session of 45 minutes for 90,000rp
VIP Room
They even advertise a package "all-in", which includes sex. I imagine this package is more convenient for customers who don't want to negotiate the price of the extra directly with the lady.

Deluxe room + "all in": 579,000rp for 90 minutes (2 session, 90 minutes).
VIP room + "all in": 639,000rp for 90 minutes (2 session, 90 minutes).

The therapist will also provide clients with different shows:
Everyday at 3pm, they will go bathe in the pool area with customers.

From Monday to Friday at 5pm and from Saturday to Sunday at 1pm, they will do a show for customers as well, as below picture:

Mars Spa is a massage parlour for male only. It is relatively cheap and clean and offers similar services with Delta Spa or MyPlace (for those who haven't understood: You can get a massage plus plus, but not more unless you are lucky and pay an extra tip to the therapist).

The price for 90 minutes massage in a standard room is 350,000rp, in deluxe room 400,000rp and in the VIP room 450,000.

Mars Spa is a recommended massage parlour for those looking for a massage near Sudirman or Thamrin area. It is a cheaper alternative to Fortune Spa.

There is another Mars Spa located in Pondok Indah Plaza, next to Rizz Spa. It offers similar services. There used to be one as well in Simpruk but it has been rebranded as "Golden Orchard Spa".

Top Spa and Massage Parlours in Medan

$

Medan is a conservative city. I feel it is also much more religious than Java in particular.

There are so few foreigners in town that if you are white, people will look at you as if you were an alien. I didn't feel really comfortable there to be frankly speaking. Whenever I was walking around in the city, I could hear derogatory comments or racist slurs such as "idiot bule".

Unsurprisingly, massage parlours and spas in Medan are quite discreet. From what I read in the news, several of them have been shut down or raided by the police in the past couple years. To my knowledge, these include Glamour Spa, Escape Spa, D'Blues Spa, Dream Spa and Grand Winner Spa. The last three were apparently shut down in November 2014. Diamond Spa as well was raided and since then, they have changed their concept into a regular day spa.

The following list of spa are mostly inexpensive ones except for Delta, Elegant and Escape which are a bit more high-range. Expect to pay around 400,000 for these, and less than 250,000rp for the other ones. The first 3 are plus plus, for the other ones it is more random depending on the girl.

If a place is closed down, or if you want to list a new massage parlour, please just drop a comment below the review.

Delta Spa Medan

If I had an advice, it would be to stick with Delta Spa as they are part of a big group and most certainly pay for protection. Delta Spa Medan is located inside Grand Delta Hotel, part of the same Puri Group.

They have a great promotion at the moment: If you stay one night in Grand Delta Hotel, you will get a free massage.

13 Illogical Facts About Drugs in Indonesia

$
0
0

"Indonesia has some of the World's strictest drugs laws".

This statement is repeated in most local and international media, but it is quite inaccurate if you look at the facts. A more realistic statement would be to say that Indonesia has some of the world's most inconsistent laws and policies against drugs.

The official rhetoric from the Government is that the country wants to protect the nation's children from the danger of drugs, yet the current policies are causing even more suffering while failing to stop drug use.

An example? Parents in Indonesia are required to denounce their own children if they become aware of them taking drugs. This causes drug users to hide their addiction to their family, and in the end prevent them from getting the support they need.

Unfortunately, there are quite many other troubling incoherences. I have found 13 of them as follow:

1) Sensationalistic speeches about drugs without any reliable statistical data

The National Drug Agency (BNN) has shown its incapacity in providing the public with credible statistics regarding the number of deaths from drug use in Indonesia.

Jokowi once spoke of 50 deaths per day, but after the figures were criticized, he started to use new ones ->  "33 people die of drug addition every day in Indonesia".

This number comes out of nowhere (it might be based on surveys) and it must be used with the utmost precaution. Furthermore, this number does not say whether these people died from overdose, from suicide, or from drug-related diseases such as HIV. It does not tell as well if those deaths were from heroin, ecstasy, marijuana, misused over-the-counter drugs, etc.

Even if we consider 33 deaths per day, it means 12,045 deaths per year for a population of 250 M people. That's a 48 per million death rate.

Surprisingly, the Netherlands, one of the countries with the less punitive drug laws on the planet, has a 10.2 per million death rate only.

This could mean two things:
  • If the Indonesian statistics are correct, then we should wonder why the Indonesian death rate is 4 times as high as in the Netherlands.
  • If the Indonesian statistics are incorrect, thus inflated, we have to wonder why would Jokowi try to sensationalize the drug issue?

2) Making the drug issue a national priority while ignoring other preventable causes of death

Let's give the benefit of the doubt to Jokowi and consider that there is indeed 12,045 drug-related deaths every year in Indonesia. This data should be compared to other causes of avoidable death in the country:

Tuberculosis: Indonesia has more than 90,000 deaths from tuberculosis every year, a preventable and curable disease. Most of the efforts to fight it are not coming from the Government but from international aid agencies, namely the Global Fund. Read More on the NY Times: Losing the Fight Against Tuberculosis

The fight against Malaria, which used to be one of the top causes of deaths in Indonesia is mostly undertaken by International organizations as well and almost all of its funding is foreign:
Financing of Malaria Programs in Indonesia (WHO)
Car accidents:  In 2002, there were just over 8,000 road deaths every year in Indonesia. In 2014, that number rose to almost 40,0000 deaths, that's a 500% increase!
Yet, you don't see the Government declaring war on potholes nor many campaigns of prevention.

Tobacco kills over 200,000 persons every year in Indonesia. The number of smokers is actually rising as Indonesia is failing to tackle the issue. Isn't it ironic that the top two richest men in Indonesia are legal drug sellers -> Budi Hartono (Djarum - 16,5 billion $) and Susilo Wonowidjojo (Gudang Garam - 8 billion $)?
Don't Quit Smoking ? Advertising for LA Lights cigarettes
I am not saying that drug is not a problem. On the contrary, like every issue, it requires rational and pragmatic solutions. Populist, emotionally-charged speeches about "saving the nation" and "waging war on drugs", based on questionable statistics, are actually damaging. They encourage only the most punitive solutions, the ones that have failed so far everywhere else in the world.

3) Indonesia is the country in Southeast Asia that spends the less for healthcare (after Myanmar)

While the Indonesian Government talks a lot about the health of its citizens and how it is threatened by drugs, it actually spends very little for them. According to the World Health Organization, only 2,6% of Indonesia's GDP is spent for healthcare.

This is to be compared with the spendings of the following countries: Vietnam 6,8%, Thailand 3,9%, Singapore 4%, Laos 4,5%, Malaysia 4,4%, Philippines 3,6%, China 5,1%, Cambodia 5,6%, Japan 9,5%, South Korea 6,9%.

Only Myanmar is spending less as a percentage of its GDP, namely 2%.

4) A War on Drug, but not a War on Drug-Related Deaths

The efforts of Indonesia to prevent drug-related deaths are very limited. Most harm reduction programs currently existing are actually financed and led by Foreign donors.

Drug use and the spread of HIV are intrinsically linked as it is estimated that up to 50% of injecting drug users in Indonesia are contaminated with HIV.

Reducing the number of drug-related deaths would require fighting against the transmission of HIV through needle sharing and educating drug users about safe sex practices.

The budget to fight Aids in Indonesia is mostly financed by International sources, not by the Indonesia Government itself. Out of $50,831,105 allocated in 2010, only $19,841,442 was financed by the domestic/public sector and the rest by International donors.

People would argue that Indonesia is a poor country and cannot afford to spend more money. What I would argue is that the Jakarta Council was able to find over $14 million dollars to purchase UPS systems that no one asked for. It seems that money can always be found when the objective is to fill the pockets of a few.

Furthermore, Indonesia's strict drug laws have been known to worsen the difficulties for drug users. Harsh punishments will cause them to hide instead of seeking for help. If they do not have access to clean syringes, they are more likely to get HIV, and in turn, more likely to spread it to other people. The longer they are hiding, the longer the risk of spreading the disease.

It makes me very confused about the objectives of the Government. Is it trying to help drug users as it pretends it is, or is it only interested in punishing them for making the wrong choices?

5) More Indonesian on death row in foreign countries than in Indonesia itself

In 2013, there were 188 Indonesians on death row abroad on drug charges (236 in total). This number should be compared to the only 56 Indonesians on death row in Indonesia.

If we take Malaysia, it has 250 Malaysians on death row abroad, but 600 on death row in the country. This makes more sense to me.

I find such an imbalance, more inmates abroad than in Indonesia, quite revealing: Most likely, Indonesians who are arrested in Indonesia for drugs can simply buy their way out to escape the death row while Indonesians arrested abroad cannot.

What disturbs me is that it means poor people are more likely to be in jail while rich ones will not risk anything. According to Rudhy Wedhasmara, the founder of 'Empowerment and Justice Action' (EJA) Surabaya, an NGO that helps victims of narcotics:

"We see that in practice the majority of those who are caught, then eventually sentenced to death are those who are weak, psychologically vulnerable to exploitation, and pressed for financial crush".

6) The executions target foreigners in priority, even though they represent only half of the death row inmates

Foreigners are often subjected to harsher sentences than Indonesians, unless they can bribe their way out or benefit from mysterious help (see below about incoherences).

Many people don't seem to understand how the death penalty works in Indonesia. When a death penalty sentence is given to an inmate, there is not a specific date given for his execution. He could spend the rest of his life waiting.

In fact, the one who decides about the execution is the President. He is the one who chooses who should be executed and when.

In January 2015, Jokowi hand-picked 6 persons to be executed, among which 5 foreigners. In April 2015, Jokowi selected 9 foreigners among 10 persons to be executed.

What is surprising is that there are only 35 foreigners on death row in Indonesia and 56 Indonesians. This mean that foreigners represent 87,5% of the executed, but only 38% of the inmates on death row.

In several cases, it has been blatant that there is a discrimination between Indonesians and Foreigners. For instance, Frenchmen Serge Atlaoui was given the death penalty but the Indonesians who were running the lab he was working at were only condemned to a life sentence.

7) Indonesia is sending drug users to prison instead of rehabilitation

"These young folks who have become drug addicts have lost their past and present so we should not allow them to lose their future. We should guide them back. They don't belong in a penitentiary but in a rehabilitation centre" Susilo Bambang Yudhono

In spite of the recent efforts to build more rehabilitation facilities, 54,000 detainees in Indonesia in 2013 were drug users, out of a total of 162,000 inmates. This should be compared to the 18,000 only who were sent to rehabilitation the same year.

The first explanation is the law itself. Even though officially, Jokowi talks about drug users as victims who should be protected, the fact is there is little differentiation made between a drug user and a drug trafficker.

Even the 2014 amendment to the 2009 Drug Law stipulates that unless a drug user turns himself in to the police, he will face jail time. Judges and courts are themselves not following the law and sending people caught using drugs in prison most of the time.

The other issue of course is the lack of rehabilitation centers. The Government talks about building more facilities, yet it still has to act on its promise.

Because of this, the prisons are full of simple users which is even more risky for them. They are more likely to keep using drugs in prison as it is known to be widely available there while being more exposed to risks of HIV. Read more on the UNODC website.

In spite of the "save our children" speech, many Indonesians have a negative view about drug users and do not seem to be interested in rehabilitated them.

Even the Chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama, one of the largest Islamic organisations in Indonesia which is in charge of establishing drug rehabilitation centers in the country declared :"Drug addicts deserve severe punishment, namely death".

8) Frequent cases of abuse of drug users by police officers, including rapes

Another incoherence about the so-called will from the Indonesian Government to protect drug users is the fact that many of them, instead of being guided by the police are actually abused.

There are several stories reporting these cases, but if you want to know more, I advise you to read the following: Abuses against injecting drug users in Indonesia

According to this study, 60% of drug users faced police abuse during their detention time, including beating of the feet, hands, chest, and head by officers. Sexual abuses were mentioned in 6% of the testimonies.

I also advise you to read this article about girls, sometimes prostitutes, who were gang raped by policemen so that they would not be charged with drug abuse.

Again, are we trying to punish drug users or are we trying to help them?

9) Celebrities, VIPs, Drug Lords, Policemen avoid harsher sentences

Sentencing in Indonesia is extremely arbitrary. In general, VIPs, celebrities, policemen and military officers avoid prison and go directly to rehabilitation (if not home).

For instance, when Putri Aryanti Haryowibowo, the great granddaughter of Suharto was caught using crystal methamphetamine, she avoided prison and was only sent to rehab (I wonder if she actually went).

Raffi Ahmad, a local celebrity, has not been tried yet more than 2 years after being arrested with several types of drugs.

The Head of Shariah Police in Aceh, Zulkarnain, crashed his car into a tree in 2013. Hashish was found in his car and he tested positive for drugs. Nothing happened to him. He actually threatened a journalist that if he reported on the story he would be turned to ashes.

Leeza Ormsby, from Australia, was less lucky and she spent 9 months in jail for a joint. A 14-year old Australian boy also spent 2 months in jail for being caught with 3.6 grams of marijuana. Foreigners may have lenient sentences sometimes: Thierry Verchere did only 10 months after being caught with almost $50,000 worth of cocaine which is strange considering another Frenchman, Vincent Petrone, was sentenced to 6 years for 69 grams of hashish (less than $1,000 value).

If you follow Indonesian news, you will read quite often about policemen or military caught using or trafficking drugs. Some reports, though a little dated, mention that it is very common for policemen to keep the drugs confiscated or to sell them.

Yet, it is rare to hear of a policeman being jailed for drug use, and even more to be executed. On the contrary, in some cases it seems like they can benefit from preferential treatment: 34 policemen tested positive, nothing happened.

More recently in April 2015, the death sentences of two Iranians were commuted to life in prison. This came as a surprise because simultaneously, Jokowi was refusing clemency to several inmates, among which some had shown signs of rehabilitation.

The case of Hengky Gunawan is even more disturbing. He was caught with 11.1 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and materials for drug’s production worth over $1 million but his death sentence was reduced to 15 years in prison and then to 12 years only.

The proportionality of sentences is unfortunately inexistent in Indonesia and there is no improvement in sight on the subject.

10) Drug is mostly seen as an imported, Western problem

For most Indonesians, the drug problem comes from Foreigners only. Medias and politicians are responsible for that as they tend to misrepresent it as if all the drugs traffic was in the hands of International traffickers.

They also often forget to mention that large quantities of drugs are produced in Indonesia to be exported. Naturally, since the problem is seen as a Foreign one, Indonesians are very supportive of harsher sentences against them.
Drug use has actually been prevalent in Indonesia for centuries, even long before the Dutch arrived in the country. In the 17th century, numerous documents attest that the use of opium was widespread in Java. The habit of smoking opium by adding it to tobacco was developed in Indonesia before spreading to China. In other parts of Indonesia, some narcotics obtained from plants and trees have also been consumed for ages such as betel nuts in Nusa Tenggara or marijuana in Aceh.

The truth is, Foreigners are part of the problem, but also a big part of the solution. Rehabilitation centers, harm reduction programs, trainings and distribution of needles/medication are largely funded by International donors.

11) Nightclubs known to be ridden with drugs operate freely and are protected by the police

When police raids or "Razzia" happen in North Jakarta clubs, the result is usually quite small: According to a BNN spokesperson, 100 drug users were arrested in 25 raids last year.

If you have ever been to those clubs, you will understand that there is something wrong. A single raid in a place like Mille's or Golden Crown should cause at least 500 arrests.

The BNN spokesperson also mention that after 25 police raids, they haven't caught a single drug dealer yet: ""Everytime a raid is held, we always encounter in drug users, but never caught a dealer or courier. This proves that drug dealers doesn't always appear in night clubs".

The BNN seems either very naive or very corrupted. I let you choose one.

It is well known that clubs are always warned in advance when a police raid is planned, thus naturally no dealers will be present. Only a few people who have no clues, including foreigners, will be caught.

After 25 unfruitful raids, maybe the BNN should make an investigation on who informs the clubs? Maybe the BNN should make an investigation on who owns those clubs?

12) Impunity for the bosses of drug trafficking and drug distribution

Since Jokowi has declared a war on drugs, I don't remember of a single mafia boss or big trafficker who has been arrested.

In the past, as mentioned above, known traffickers suck as Hengky Gunawan have escaped not only the death penalty, but also life sentences.

I invite you to read my article about the 30 Groups who Own Jakarta Nightlife to better understand this point. You will learn the links between Tomy Winata, one of Jakarta's alleged mafia boss with some notorious drug-ridden clubs in North Jakarta.

While Indonesia is said to be at war against drugs, I was surprised of see that Tomy Winata paid all the expenses of a trip to Las Vegas on May 21st, 2012 to several police officials and high executives of the National Drug Agency (BNN) including Gories Mere the Head of BNN at that time.

More recently, we could see Tomy Winata together with the new head of the BNN, Anang Iskandar to promote a "Drug Rehabilitation Program"[sic].
Tomy Winata with the head of the National Drug Agency
Top politicians like SBY, Megawati, or current Vice President Yusuf Kalla have been known to frequent him.
Tomy Winata with Megawati, previous President of Indonesia, mentor of Jokowi
Tomy Winata with SBY, former President of Indonesia
Tomy Winata with Yusuf Kalla, current Vice President of Indonesia
Even though Tomy Winata has never been convicted for drugs, he has also never been subject to an investigation.

13) Indonesia is ignoring the fight against illicit financial flows

According to the UN, the most effective method to fight drugs is to combine those three approaches:
  • Reduce demand with prevention programs and treatments
  • Reduce supply by dismantling drug trafficking organizations
  • Control illicit financial flows
We have seen that prevention programs and treatments are ignored by the Government and mostly managed by International aid agencies. The fight against drug trafficking organization by the Government is just smoke and mirrors as it is mostly mules, drug users and small fish that are being caught.

The Government is also failing at controlling its illicit financial flows. According to the Global Financial Integrity organization, Indonesia ranks 11th in the list of countries with the largest illicit financial outflows. In 2012 alone, over $ 20 billion left the country illegally, among which drug money.

Yet, the Government has not shown any commitment in its fight against suspicious funds. Budi Gunawan, currently the number 2 of Indonesia's police force is known to have had over $7 million of suspicious money in his family's bank account. Yet Jokowi didn't push for a proper investigation...

Conclusion

If you are Indonesian, there are 80% chance you disagree with me. Please don't hesitate to comment, I'll love to have an interesting discussion about the topic.

Paradise Spa is a popular male-only massage parlour located in Sunter area. Most of the crowd is made of Indonesians, usually from the middle class, who are drawn by the cheap prices and the good value for money.

For less than 30$ indeed, you can get a naked massage with a happy ending. If you spend 50$, you can actually even get sex. The system is similar to the one in D'Heaven Spa: You can choose an all-in package where everything is included (Rp525,000), or you can choose to pay for the room only and then negotiate directly with the girl for any extra.

There are 2 types of rooms to choose from: Deluxe (Rp 185,000 for 90 min) or VIP (Rp 210,000 for 90 min). Tips range from Rp100,000 for a handjob, Rp200,000 for a blowjob, Rp300,000 for sex. I took this information from their website: New Paradise Spa Sunter and Paradise Spa Sunter (both also feature pictures of the therapists).

The spa includes all typical facilities such as sauna, hot and cold pool, jacuzzi (steam). You also have sexy dancers and therapist showing once a day. The price for the facilities only (no massage) is Rp 60,000.

Medan Nightlife: Top 5 Nightclubs & Bars

$
0
0
I spent a few nights in Medan in April 2015, unfortunately on weekdays only. I had the opportunity to try a few clubs there but most weren't too busy and I imagine it is more lively on weekends.

As you would expect, Medan is far from being a party town. It is more conservative than many other Indonesian cities and there are also very few tourists. Most foreigners living there are Singaporean and Malaysian businessmen with a small community of expat english teachers.

As I wrote on the review Spa and Massage Parlours in Medan, the police is active in controlling nightlife activities, in particular when it comes to drugs. Last February, the Lee Garden club was shut down after ecstasy pills were found (Diskotik Lee Garden Tutup). In spite of this, recreative drugs do not seem difficult to find and clubs such as Tobasa, XXX3 or Retrospective are known to be popular with users. I strongly recommend you not to take anything illegal as you have no idea where you could end up if you get caught.

In spite of being Indonesia's third largest city, the number of decent clubs in Medan is incredibly low. To do a top 5 of the best nightlife in Medan, I had to include some underground clubs that most people wouldn't feel comfortable visiting. For this reason, if you are a "normal" clubber, I would only recommend trying the first two venues listed below:

1) Entrance

Located in Grand Aston Hotel, Entrance is the favorite club for expats in Medan. If you are a westerner, that's probably the first place you should visit. It is open everyday but you can expect it to be crowded only on weekends. They have more foreign DJs and the crowd is less static than in Retrospective (see below).

Check their events on Facebook Entrance Music Temple Medan or Twitter: Entrance Club

Entrance Medan

Phone number: +62 (0) 61 4573 900 - HP +62 (0) 87867551188

2) Retrospective

If you are ready to spend a little money, another decent club to try is Retrospective, in Capital Building. Also nicknamed "Retro", it is located not far from the city center.

Nearby landmarks include the train station, the Marriott Hotel and the Grand Aston. Also in the vicinity is the Merdeka Walk, a string of restaurants which is one of the most lively areas in town in the evening. I would recommend to go there for a food-court type dinner.

Retrospective is a bar, nightclub and live music venue. The best events are almost exclusively on Fridays and Saturdays: You have a "big" performance once a week, either from a local celebrity band/singer, or from a special guest DJ. Guest DJs are usually coming from Jakarta, but they also had foreign ones. They seem to love female DJs and sexy dancers.

Check their events on their facebook page Retro Medan or twitter: Retrospective. There is also a high end KTV in Capital Building and SoHo lounge on 2nd Floor.

3) 4) 5) Tobasa Medan, XXX3 and New Zone

Tobasa Club Medan
Sexy clubbers in Tobasa
Tobasa is an underground club which is part of the Danau Toba International Hotel. The place looks quite run-down and it is very dark. The music is typical funky house (listen below) unless they have a special event. It seems to be gay-friendly.

I also put XX3 and New Zone in the same category. Those places are very local and cater mostly to hardcore clubbers using drugs.

Jakarta Nightlife: Top 10 Clubs in 2015

$

"What are the best clubs in Jakarta?" is one of the questions I get asked the most by readers of Jakarta100bars.

The following list should answer this question though I imagine some of you may disagree with my rankings. If you do, please leave a comment below about your favorite clubs in the city.

Surprisingly, there has not been so many changes in the past few year in the city's clubbing scene. All the venues listed below already existed in 2014.

As I mentioned in my review Jakarta Nightlife 2015, almost all nightclubs in Jakarta are expensive. If you are a heavy alcohol drinker and if you are with a small group, I would advise to always buy a bottle. That way you can get a table or a sofa close from the dance-floor and also avoid the First Drink Charge, FDC (usually amounting to Rp100,000 - Rp200,000). On weekends, it is essential to book in advance.

Bouncers in Jakarta take their jobs very seriously. If you are not dressed appropriately, you will be refused no matter how much money you are about to spend. Girls should always wear high-heels. Men should not wear a t-shirt or a torn jean.

Unfortunately, the quality of the music is not the focus in Jakarta. In most clubs below except Mille's, the playlist is similar and consists of a mix of mostly famous, mainstream international hits. You have an international DJ playing almost every weekend in Jakarta though. In this case, the music is more likely to be original.

If those 10 clubs are not enough, I invite you to read my list of Jakarta's Best Bars in 2015. Most of these have a DJ on Fridays and Saturdays.

1) Blowfish

Blowfish was just renovated in 2014 during Ramadan. Since it reopened, it has managed to attract Jakarta's best crowd. Recent guest DJs include Dirty South, Fat Boy Slim or Richie Hawtin.

2) Empirica

Jakarta's SCBD is the best area in the city for a fun night out. The massive Empirica is always as fun and popular, I love their 50m long bar, the chic crowd and the great sound-system.

3) Mille's

Mille's is an unusual 3rd choice and most people would not like it. It is the only decent underground club in the city, and the best place to visit after hour. Be warned that for most people partying in Mille's, the only cocktail they need is ecstasy and water. The best time to visit is after 7am.

4) Colosseum

Colosseum is the best nightclub in Jakarta on the paper: The best layout, the best sound and lighting system and some of the best events. Yet, the crowd is mostly static and not very fun to hang out with. It is also quite far from the City center.

5) X2 / Equinox

X2 is the favorite nightclub of many clubbers in Jakarta. If you are a 20-something foreigner looking to meet an Indonesian girl (and vice versa), it is certainly your best choice. The entrance and the drinks are expensive.

6) Immigrant

Source: TM Projects
I used to love Immigrant, but it has lost some of its appeal after their 2014 renovation. It is now smaller, without the possibility to go on the terrace to relax. It is still popular with expats and girls looking to meet expats.

7) Fable

If you are between 18 and 22, Fable could be your hottest party spot. You have all the cool kids from high school getting drunk with dad's money, which is even nicer when you get invited to a table.

8) Domain

5-year old Domain Club can have some great nights, but it is inconsistent. The crowd is a bit older than elsewhere, probably because it is made of those who used to go to Embassy 10 years ago. Recent events included a performance by the porn star Sasha Grey.

9) Golden Crown

Golden Crown is a typical North Jakarta nightclub with a high level of drugs and prostitution. It is almost always crowded, mostly with Indonesians. It is a sure bet if you want to go clubbing during weekdays and if you don't mind its seedy side.

10) Illigals (Voyeur Club)

Illigals is very rarely crowded. Forget it during the week unless they have a big name coming. Still, it deserves to be in the Top 10 because they have a decent list of events. Many DJs from Stadium are now playing in Illigals too.

Bonus: Dragonfly

Dragonfly is currently closed for renovation. Once it reopens, I am quite sure that it will become once again one of Jakarta's Top Nightclubs.

Need more clubbing ideas? Check Exodus, Nebula, Umbra, Potato Head Garage. All of them are usually busy on Friday and Saturday nights and they have special events on a regular basis.

Finding Your Best Spa & Massage in Jakarta

$

0
Half of the people emailing me are usually just dropping the same sentence: "Hey, love your blog, where can I find the best spa/best massage parlour near my hotel?"

As I'm getting tired of replying to the same question almost every day, I'm writing this blog post hoping that it will answer it once and for all. I'll update the list regularly, in particular with the comments you will be kind enough to leave. You can click on each venue, it will redirect you on this blog if there is already a review, or on an external website with more detailed information.

Note: Next each venue, I put a sign: $ (cheap), $$ (moderate), $$$ (expensive).

First part: If you are looking for a clean, family massage, I advise you to go to Bersih Sehat ($) first. They are the best value-for-money massage parlours in Jakarta: Clean and basic but very affordable. You will find them in the following locations:
- Near Sarinah or Jalan Jaksa: On Jalan Wahid Hasyim, in front of Ibis Hotel
- Near Menteng, Cikini or Jalan Rasuna Said: On Jalan Diponegoro
- Near Sudirman, Plaza Indonesia, Grand Indonesia, Midplaza: In Sahid Jaya Hotel
- Near Mall of Indonesia, Sunter, Kelapa Gading: On Jalan Bukit Gading Raya
- Near Pondok Indah: In Pondok Indah Plaza 2
- Near the Airport (20 minutes) or near Taman Anggrek: On Jalan Puri Kencana

If you are looking for a more upmarket venue, the best thing to do is to go to the nearest 4 or 5-star hotel. From what I heard, the best ones are in Four Seasons Hotel ($$$), in Ritz-Carlton ($$$), in Dharmawangsa Hotel ($$$), in Nikko Hotel ($$$), in Hyatt ($$$), in Shangri-La ($$$) and in Marriott ($$$).

There are also a plenty of other independent salons, spas and massage parlours, but many are only for women:
Near Sudirman/Setiabudi/Rasuna Said: Lumiere spa ($$), Samsara Spa ($$), Sanctum Spa ($$), Gaya Spa ($$$), Harnn and Thann ($$$), Zen Living Boutique Spa ($$)
Near Sarinah: Taman Sari Royal Heritage ($$$), Az-Zuhra ($$, women only)
Near Senayan: Yasuragi ($, call +62-21 5794 0884), Harnn and Thann Sanctuary ($$$)
Near Tebet: La Baiza Beauty Centre ($, +62-21 829 0294), Lavender Spa ($)
Near Kemang: Thann Sanctuary ($$$), Kupu Kupu Spa ($$$), Javana spa ($$), Nujaniv ($$), Lellidewi ($$, women only)
Near Mega Kuningan: JaSpa ($, in Ambassador Mall: +62-21 576 0480), Poise spa ($$, in Bellagio, +62-21 3001 9921)
Near Cipete: Puri Santi ($$$), Hareem Spa ($$), Jamu Traditional Spa ($$$), Bale Bale ($$, women only), Itje Her ($, women only)
In Pondok Indah: Mitra Sehat ($), Puri Santi ($$$)
Near Dharmawangsa: Zaiken ($), Life Tree Spa ($$), Sari Mustika ($$)
Near Gandaria: Cozy Spa ($$), Bale Bale ($$, women only)
Near Kebaryoran Baru: Mitra Sehat ($), Reggia Spa ($$), House of Relax"Hore" ($$), Q Day spa ($$), Gaya Spa ($$$), Elements ($$, women only), Zen Family Reflexology ($$), Svana ($$)
Near Pluit: Roseberry Spa ($), Yu Yuan Tang ($)
Near Permata Hijau: Laxo ($$)
Near Kelapa Gading: Clique Spa ($$, +62-21 458 55327), Yu Yuan Tang ($)
Near Harmoni/Hayam Wuruk: Sien Cuk Thang ($)
Near Mangga Dua: Lotus ($)

At last, if you are a girl, check the spas of the Martha Tilaar group, among which Dewi Sri Spa ($$). Usually located in Central and South Jakarta, they provide excellent service but most of them do not accept men.

Check also the newly opened Relax Living Spas.

Second part: If you are looking for a massage parlour for men only, I advise you to go to Delta Spa ($$) first. As with Bersih Sehat, they can be found a bit everywhere (Harmoni, Gatot Subroto, Wijaya, Kelapa Gading, Kebon Jeruk, etc... check my review for all the locations and phone numbers).

My Place ($$) is also a popular chain, with branches all over Jakarta (Kelapa Gading, Senayan, Kebayoran Baru, Gunung Sahari/Pasar Baru, Bekasi, Tangerang/Serpong, Kebon Jeruk).

There are tons of other independent venues. Some are mild (plus plus massage), some are much hotter (Thai massage, Body Massage, Nuru Massage, Soapy massage, etc...). Click on the review first to learn more about each one:
In Mangga Dua: Forte Spa ($), Comfort Spa ($$), M-star ($$), Puri Sehat ($), Sands ($$), Orchardz ($$)
In Glodok: Pegasus Spa ($), Golden Crown ($$), Sun City ($$$)
In Lokasari: Oukup ($), Olimpic Hotel ($), Oasis Spa ($), Cherry ($)
Near Mangga Besar: Orchardz ($$), Laluna ($), Sparks ($$)
On Jalan Gadjah Mada: V2 ($$$), Malioboro ($$$)
On Jalan Hayam Wuruk: Stadium ($$), Berlian Panti Pijat ($$), Kartika Panti Pijat ($$), Illigals ($$$)
Near Pasar Baru: Classic ($$), Golden Boutique Hotel Pecenongan ($$), Emporium ($$$)
Near Rasuna Said/Sudirman/Mega Kuningan: Mayzo ($), Fortune ($$$), Mars Spa
Near Kemang/Dharmawangsa/Fatmawati/Blok M/Melawai: Golden Boutique Hotel Melawai ($$), Fortune ($$$), and many more in Little Tokyo.
Near Pondok Indah: Rizz ($$), Mars ($$)
In Kelapa Gading: Sumo ($$) King Cross ($$), Second Home ($$), Comfort Spa ($$), MTR2 ($$), D'Heaven ($$)
In Sunter: Paradise Spa ($$)
In Ancol: Alexis Hotel
In Pluit: Golden Hands spa ($$)
Near Roxy: Tropical Spa ($), Imperial ($)
Near Jalan Pangeran Jayakarta (PangJay or Pen-J or Panjay): MTR ($), Kimochi ($), Sari Ayu ($), DV Shiatsu ($), Royal Bar and Massage ($), Orchardz ($$)
Closest from Jakarta airport: Blue Print ($$), FM1 ($), Orchardz Bandara ($$)
In BSD/Tangerang: Jupiter ($), La Maestro ($), Orchid Spa ($)

As you can see, most of these men massage parlours are in North or West Jakarta, plus a few near Dharmawangsa square. If you live in the South or Central Jakarta, your options will be limited: You should go to the places near Jalan Melawai/Dharmawangsa OR Fortune OR Delta. If you decide to go North, the closest ones from Jalan Sudirman are V2, Malioboro, Emporium and Classic

To finish, there might be some of you interested in gay massages, with a male therapist. I don't know many venues, but there are already two mentioned on this blog: 9M (near Plaza Indonesia/Tanah Abang) and Turkish Bath (Kemang).

Feel free to comment if you find some mistakes in this review. Thanks!

The Venesia BSD - Tangerang Nightlife

The Venesia Executive Hotel, Club and Karaoke is located in BSD (Bumi Serpong Damai) in Tangerang. It is at least one hour away from Jakarta.

To my knowledge, it is the only upper class one-stop entertainment venue in Tangerang. For those who don't know, one-stop entertainment venues in Indonesia are big complexes with generally a hotel, a spa, a karaoke, a restaurant and a club. If there is the word "executive" in their names, it means that it is reserved for men and that most likely, all girls you will find inside are money-oriented. For exemple: Golden Crown or Sun City.

I was quite surprised to learn such a party place existed in Tangerang as the local authorities have been known to be rather conservative. The nightlife there, until now, was almost non-existent and it can still be difficult to buy alcoholic drinks.

The Venesia is owned by the same group behind The Venetian Spa and Karaoke in Bandung, which is one of the city's top massage parlours. It is still new but already popular, particularly on weekends. The events are usually similar to that of North Jakarta clubs: Sexy dancers, female DJs or live bands. They are also working with the DJs from Stadium.

Overall: Tangerang is far for anyone staying in Central Jakarta. If you are living there though, The Venesia might be your best option for a festive night out.

Newten Lounge and Massage is located on Jalan Boulevard Raya, Kelapa Gading. The outside doesn't look great but it is actually clean when you get inside. It's more than a regular massage parlour as there is a bar inside with a DJ. It replaces the Ten Spa and Reflexology (Hence the name, "New" Ten):
The prices are rather affordable. A 90 minutes massage will cost you around 20$ in their VIP room, excluding tips.

Handjobs or other sexual services are not part of the SOP, but it seems to be common in Newten. They also organize some events with live band and DJs.

B'Fashion Hotel, Spa, Karaoke & Oppai Club

$

0
Bfashion Spa is a popular massage parlour with plus-plus and even plus-plus-plus, located behind Mall Taman Anggrek. It offers similar services as Orchardz spa

On three floors, you will find an executive club (Oppai, with sexy dancers and striptease), a spa and a karaoke. It is actually also a real hotel with actual guests. The Taman Anggrek area (Grogol) is not the best but if you are looking for a guest-friendly hotel in Jakarta, then you cannot do much better.

The spa is famous for the special services it provides. These include the "Ice mouthly", the "sweet honey", the "butterfly" and the "tiger claws" (cakar harimau).

So what do those special services exactly consist of? All of them are sexual/prostitution services:

Ice Mouthly or Dreaming Ice or Alaska Dream (480,000rp): You will get a blowjob where the girl puts ice in her mouth then plays with it..

Sweet honey (480,000rp): The girl will cover your whole body with honey, then lick it.

Butterfly (580,000rp): It includes a Private body massage + an ice blowjob.

Tiger Claws (880,000rp): It is an extreme body licking performed by the girl, followed with sex. Not all girls are able to perform it apparently.

They also have a "traditional" massage which is done topless by the therapist and end with a "happy ending" (a "tug job", part of the SOP).

The Oppai club is quite happening, especially on weekends. It has all the typical shows of other adult entertainment complexes in Jakarta such as Classic or King Cross (nude dancing, gogo, pole dancing). It is the only place with shower dancing to my knowledge though. Drinks and cocktail prices are reasonable, in line with that of the nightlife venues mentioned above. Foreigners are welcome but you should know that the crowd is almost 100% local.

Saigon Nightlife: Top 10 Clubs and Bars

$

Ho Chi Minh City nightlife, in Vietnam, is one of the craziest in Southeast Asia. I lived in the city for a few months in 2015 and this is my report about its best nightclubs, bars, karaokes and beer gardens. Note that Ho Chi Minh City can also be called Saigon, HCM or HCMC. I will also give more general nightlife tips for clubbing and having fun in Vietnam.

Top 10 Vietnamese Nightclubs

Rich Vietnamese will usually party between themselves in intimate, swanky clubs and bars with very few foreigners inside. Typically, they will buy huge bottles of premium alcohol, have insanely hot-looking girls with them, and stay in groups around a table.

Vietnamese really know how to party so you will find a hell of an atmosphere in those places, with many drunk and stoned people going mental. In clubs like 02 Gold or Artistry, it seemed based on my observation that most clubbers were tripping on ecstasy or other drugs I'm not aware of. It is common to see someone who just passed out being evacuated by security.

In those Vietnamese clubs, you will notice that bouncers provide often over the top service. When you enter, they will escort you to a table, making you a way in the crowd as if you were some sort of high-profile VIP or celebrity. Of course, they expect generous tips for their services. The minute they understand you won't tip much even though you are white, they will most likely abandon you.
This nightclub is insane. I've never seen a club decorated in such an ostentatious way. The number of stunners (perfect 10 girls) is very high (you can see some photos from the girls inside 02 Gold at the bottom of this review). I recommend only if you are comfortable being in a 100% Vietnamese environment. Be warned that there is no proper bar: You need to book a table or order a bottle.
Even though it is located just a street away from Bui Vien's backpacker district, you won't see a foreigner in Artistry. As for Gold 02, Artistry has a huge ratio of incredibly sexy girls per square meter. The music is loud and pumping and the décor very impressive.
Something strange happened to us in this place though: The first night we tried to go in, we (2 foreigners) were told: "No beautiful girls, come back tomorrow". It seemed we were not welcomed on that particular day.

3) Play
Located in the same building as Glow, but more popular with local crowd. Stylish place, good lighting and sound system, expensive. They have sexy dancers and burlesque shows.
A.C.E is located just one street behind Lush. It is quite similar with Play and targets the same crowd. Very busy on weekends, you MUST buy a bottle to enter. Pacman THEME.

Very small club, Rather young, good party crowd. There is both a rooftop area in the open air and a closed room for clubbing.

6) Fuse
Fuse is the popular nightclub of the Marriott Renaissance hotel in Ton Duc Thang Street. For this reason, it is more common to see foreigners there. International DJs occasionally.

There is no sign in front of this club so it is a bit tricky to find. It has the reputation of being owned by the mafia and to be popular with recreative drugs users.

Young crowd, happening events including sexy dancers, male gogo, sumo fighting, etc.

I didn't visit it as I'm not sure it is still open. It used to be one of Saigon's top nightlife spots with great events and sexy shows as you see on the pictures:

It is located in an unassuming building, yet the crowd inside is very well-off and classy. I would recommend visiting it only with a group to celebrate an event.

Other clubs worth mentioning:

Club 2000
Cho Lon District (Chinatown), District 6. Very popular club with a karaoke. They have live music and sexy pole dancer. Impressive lighting system. Royal treatment if you are a foreigner.

Gossip is a favorite spot for Vietnamese, Viet Kieus and Asian Expats (Singaporean mostly). They have many drop dead gorgeous hostesses to whom you can buy a drink. They can dance with you or accompany you to sing at the karaoke.

I have also heard about the following places but I did not visit:
Attica (might be closed), Don Lounge (seems like a luxurious club but I could not find if they are still open or not).

I went to another club called 52 Lan Kwai Fong. They had quite impressive pole dancers and a good vibe. The standard was more middle class than the venues listed above though.

The Best Beer Bars in Saigon

Kingdom is the most popular beer bar in Saigon among the local elite. It is packed almost every day of the week starting 9pm. It can be difficult to get a table there if you are not a regular and if you are only spending a little money. For a guy, the best thing about Kingdom is to look at some of the most beautiful girls you will find in the city. Most are with boyfriends and friends though so it is not really a pick up place.
There are litteraly hundreds of beer bars in Ho Chi Minh, from low class to super high class. Some nice places that I have tried are Vuvuzela Beer bars (several locations, the most famous and popular beer bar chain in Vietnam) and Poc Poc Beer Garden in District 3.
You may also want to check Racing Beer Club (RBC), Shooters Beer Club, Texas Beer Club, Hangover Beer Club and One Plus Beer ClubFox Beer Lounge is a new venue with great location, just a few hundred meters from Kingdom. It is more relaxed and easy-going.
If you crave to drink imported Belgian Beer, then you should try Beer & Barrel in District 3.

Top Nightclubs and Bars for Expats and Tourists

As of today, the best expat nightclubs / bars in Ho Chi Minh City are the following:

1) Glow

Impressive rooftop bar with great music and a very relaxed atmosphere. Many expats, among which 50% seem to be French.
Even though it is often unnecessarily pretentious, Chill Skybar remains a great place for a night out. With a magic view and a beautiful crowd, all you need to enjoy it fully is a 6 figure salary.

3) Lush
Lush is fun and an excellent place to meet Vietnamese girls. Many of those going to Lush are non prostitute and are looking to meet foreigners. On the downside, Lush's music is mostly mainstream and the service can be awful. It also attracts quite many backpackers.

Sin Lounge is one of HCMC's favorite party venues for models, actresses and other local celebrities. Many of the patrons are Viet Kieu (Vietnamese from overseas). They have regular events such as guest DJs, bikini dancers or fashion shows.

In District 1, other popular nightclubs and bars among younger Expats are Ratcha Room, Blanchy's Tash Bar and Xu.
Those who are broke will stay in Bui Vien's backpacker area where you can drink a beer for less than a dollar in one of the dozens of street cafés.

Hipsters and Alternative Nightlife in Saigon

The alternative scene is thriving in Saigon. Young, hipster-like expats will typically go to The Observatory. It is quite a cool place with top electronic music DJs. It is mostly crowded with white Europeans and Americans so you won't really feel you are in Vietnam at all.

Other popular venues with this group: Saigon Lookout, Saigon OutcastCargo, DeciBel, Cube Bar, Saigon Ranger and Broma.
The Observatory

Best Live Music Venues in Ho Chi Minh City

Maxim's
Ho Chi Minh City has a fair number of live music venues spread out around the city. My favourite is Maxim's in Majestic Hotel which usually features jazzy/latin tunes. Guests are invited to hit the dancefloor as well to practice with one of their professional dancers. Maxim's also has friendly woman PRs, hostesses and waitresses. Cocktails and wines are rather expensive, at least 10$ per glass.
Saigon Saigon Bar (Caravelle Hotel)
Saigon Saigon Bar in Caravelle Hotel is another popular option. Though less fancy than Maxim's, it is just as expensive. They usually have a band from the Philippines singing Top 40 and famous songs. During the week, it can be quiet but you will see it full on weekend nights. It is partly in the open-air with a nice view of the opera.
Catwalk
Catwalk Club is part of the casino complex called International Tourist Club, just next to New World Hotel in Central HCMC. It is luxurious as well, but the crowd more Asian. They have a Cuban and Vietnamese band.
Other recommendations:
Live Jazz Music: Sax N'Art (Daily)
Live Latin Music: Pacharan (Wednesday and Friday)
Live Rock and Top 40: Hard Rock Café HCMC
Alternative: Fenêtre Soleil

In almost all of Saigon's 5-star hotels, you will have some sort of live jazzy/piano music in the evening. This is particularly true in Grand Hotel, Park Hyatt, Sheraton, Intercontinental and Lotte Legend Hotel.

If you are interested in listening to live famous Vietnamese song, you can try Sixteen Bar (16 Lê Quý Dôn, District 3) or WE lounge in the same street.

After Hour Clubbing in HCMC

My biggest disappointment with Ho Chi Minh nightlife is that bars, clubs and pubs tend to close rather early. Past 3am, if you want your night out to continue, your options will be severely limited to some of the seediest clubs and bars in town.

These include the downtown hostess bars in the Hai Bai Trung street area (see below).

Apocalypse Now (often referred by its shortened name "Apo") is probably the best late night option though it is only open until 4am. Backpackers, expats and prostitutes rock the dancefloor of this rather old-style club. The music is not very sophisticated and you'll hear mostly famous hits.
Nearby, you have Last Call, which is a small place popular with expats. There was a French man behind the bar when I was there who might be the owner.
At the heart of Saigon's backpacker district on De Tham Street, GO 2 bar and nightclub welcomes late clubbers until 6 or 7am. It is similar in style with Apocalypse, only smaller and with twice as many prostitutes and backpackers.

Picking Up Girls, Hostess Bars, Red Light Districts in Ho Chi Minh City

Vietnamese girls are typically not "easy" to pick up.  Few accept the idea of a detached one-night stand with a stranger compared to girls you would meet in some other Southeast Asian countries. You will also notice that many Vietnamese girls are still living with their parents if they are not married yet.

If you are going out with the idea of finding a girl to sleep with for the night, your best chance is in Lush, Blanchy's Tash Bar, Xu or Glow. In all these places, the women are interested to meet foreigners.  It will take a some charm, some luck and some convincing if you want something to happen though. Another option would be to try your luck with a foreign girl as there are quite many in the city either tourists or expats.
If you have no charm, no patience and no luck, you might be tempted to pay for sex. I don't know if prostitution is legal or not in Vietnam, but it is surely widespread.

In all Vietnamese nightclubs, the proportion of girls looking for money is very high. You rarely see a group of girls alone having fun and paying for their own drinks. More likely, you'll encounter groups of guys partying together with girls they have invited. Those can be girlfriends, mistresses or hostesses (rarely the wife). The 5-star hotels and casinos bars have a fair share of lady companions as well (Maxim's, Catwalk, Caravelle, etc).

In District 1, the red light district area is located near Ngô Văn Năm and Hai Bai Trung streets. It is not really hardcore compared to Bangkok for instance, and far more discreet. Places like Smileys or 29 are Vietnam's equivalent to Thailand's blowjob bars.

You also have milder hostess bars such as Voodoo next to Bitexco tower or The Office Bar (16 Huynh Thuc Khang District 1). Both usually close late. They have friendly waitresses who are not really prostitute but who might meet you after work. At the bar, they will just chat or play games (connect four in particular). You can reward them for the time spent with you by buying them ladies' drinks from which they get a percentage.

Best Luxury Karaoke in Saigon

King Karaoke in Hai Bai Trung Street could be one of the most luxurious in Saigon. You will also find top notch karaoke rooms in most of the Vietnamese clubs listed above and in all the casinos.
A Room in King 2
There is also a huge number of Japanese and Korean KTVs in Saigon's Little Tokyo on Ngô Văn Năm street. Popular venues nearby are: Gion Lounge, Mermaid, Tre Bamboo, Himitsu, Mario Bar, Cherry Club, , Cat's eye, Kin No Buta, Ko Ne Ko, AZ Honda Garu Japanese Lounge, Kawano Club, Saigon Infinity 888, Jumbo, Kaku Renbo, Thien Than Kiss and many more. The kind of service provided varies depending on the establishment and the girls. Some will only accompany you to sing or to drink, some may go back with you to your hotel, and some may do more in the privacy of the karaoke room.

Spas and Beauty Salons for Men in Ho Chi Minh City

Beauty Salons:
Le Duyen's beauty salons are a special breed of spas. Reserved for a male clientele (but not forbidden to women), you can get a massage, a haircut or a facewash. Each Le Duyen salon has around 20 beautiful therapists who will pamper you as if you were a king. Nothing sexual going on there, but it is certainly arousing.

There are 4 in Saigon. One of them is conveniently located downtown at 72 Truong Dinh, Ben Thanh, District 1.

Spas ++:
In District 1, it is not hard to find dirty spas. You can try My Anh for instance also located in Truong Dinh Street, near Ben Thanh market. You can also go to the area between Le Than Ton street and Ngô Văn Năm street where half of the shops are either massage parlours with special services or hostess bars. A famous one is Tokyo Spa which is a favorite for Japanese men.

Outside of District 1, you can also get a massage plus plus (massage with handjob) in Star Hotel (204, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, District 3) or in Festival Massage (Cao Thang Street, District 3).

24-hour Massage Plus Plus (Happy Ending) in Saigon

Surprisingly, some naughty massage parlours in Ho Chi Minh City are opened non-stop 24-hour, everyday of the week.

Such places include Minh Tam 1 on Le Quy Don street (District 3), Minh Tam 2 (Binh Tan District) , Dai Nam (District 1) or Vien Dong Hotel next to the backpacker area in Pham Ngu Lao.

Ladies Nights in Saigon

Bars and Clubs are very generous with girls during Ladies Nights in Ho Chi Minh City. The best one is certainly the one in Lush on Tuesdays (Free Drinks for Girls until midnight). On that day, you will have an incredibly high ratio of women available per men.

Two other great Ladies Nights happen in Blanchy's Tash Bar (every Wednesday until Midnight, all you can drink mojitos) and in Fuse (every Wednesday as well, free drinks for ladies).

The Texas Beer Club has 3 ladies nights on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Girls who aren't afraid of getting fat will get free beer until midnight.

Another cool and popular event is the Saigon Soul Pool Party (every saturdays during dry season only from November to May) at the New World Hotel.

Gay Nightlife in Ho Chi Minh City

I am only aware of Centro lounge and bar at the moment, which is located just next to Caravelle Hotel in Lam Son Square. There used to be a place called GQ but it closed down in the beginning of the year.

A friend is supposed to update me on the other gay bars and clubs in Saigon so I'll update this page soon.

Top Sports Bars and Expat Bars

Australian-owned Phatty's Sports Bar and Grill is one of the best choices to watch sports and socialize with fellow expats in Saigon.

The hostess bars mentioned above (particularly The Office and Voodoo) are also popular.

Similar with Phatty's, I also enjoy the old-style Hien and Bob (43 Hai Bà Trưng) and Red Bar in front of the Bitexco tower.

Best Rooftop Lounges in HCMC

There are several rooftop lounges in Saigon. I already talked about Glow and Chill Skybar, both of which are excellent, though pricey.

Similar to those places, you can try Air 360 Skybar (same owner as Chill Skybar) and Shri (Nguyen Thi Minh Khai).
I also visited the lounge on top of the Bitexco tower, Eon 51, but it was poorly maintained and I cannot recommend it except for the view.

Other Saigon Nightlife Tips

Fruit baskets: In some clubs, the waiter will propose to bring you a plate of fruits when you order alcohol. Be careful as the price can be quite expensive.
Partying in Groups: Vietnamese party in groups, around a table and a bottle. The concept of mingling and blending with strangers on a dance floor is foreign to them. They also don't expect to meet a girl in a club: Either they bring girls with them already or they pay for hostesses to accompany them. In many of these clubs, you must buy a bottle minimum to enter, for instance A.C.E in District 1.

Getting Around - Parking/Taxi/Motorbike -  Taxis are cheap, don't drive if you feel a bit tipsy. The Vinasun taxi company is the most recommended. You could also rent a motorbike for your night out for around 100,000 per day (go to Bui Vien's backpacker district to do so). Vietnamese drive recklessly but the traffic at night is quite easy to manage. When you park your motorbike, always make sure that the spot is guarded. You usually pay between 2,000 and 20,000 for parking.

Minimum age for clubbing: One of the most shocking thing i saw in Vietnam is how young some people are in clubs. It is a common sight to see 5-year old children sitting next to their party parents. For this reason, I don't feel that the age limit actually mean something. You can probably drink in any nightclub at any age provided you have enough money.

Police Raids: As drug use seems pretty common in some clubs, the police raids them from time to time. They will also check if there is prostitution taking places. 02 Gold was raided several times but it is still there so I imagine that it is possible to bribe your way out. You can read more in this article: Police Raid Saigon Nightlife.

Safety: Being a foreigner in a Vietnamese club means you will be treated like royalty. Many people will be happy to see you and they will invite you to cheer with them. I would advise to remain discreet and careful though as a situation can go from good to bad in a few seconds only. In particular, always follow the rules and show respect to the bouncers. Never ever start a fight with a local. Be extra careful when flirting with a girl: Make sure she does not have a boyfriend nearby already.

Girl Friendly Hotels in Ho Chi Minh City/ 24 hour hotels / Love Hotels

In literally every street of Saigon, you will find a short time / love hotel. Just pay attention to those advertising 24h check-in and a price by the hour. For instance, 80,000 VND / 1 giờ (giờ means hour).

Prices can be very cheap, from less than 5$ for an hour to rent the room. 4* to 5* hotels are usually all girl friendly.

Vietnamese Girls

Vietnamese Girls are probably among the hottest, most beautiful girls in the world. In general, they are open to meeting foreigners but those who don't speak English will be shy to start a conversation.

You will see a lot of stunners in luxury clubs. Feminine, tall, thin girls wearing designer clothes and expensive jewelry are legion. Surgery is surprisingly very common: In certain elite circles, there is nothing more ordinary than getting a boob job or a nose job.

Many Vietnamese girls look always neat: Eyebrows are trimmed in dedicated salon, hairs are plaited or made to look wavy, nails are perfectly manicured. They avoid the sun like the plague so their skin is more white than milk.

In spite of being rather conservative when it comes to sex, Vietnamese girls are not afraid of showing some legs and cleavage. Mini skirts and short dresses can be extremely sexy, even during the day.

Unfortunately, the prettiest Vietnamese girls can also be heartless gold diggers, especially if you've met them in luxury clubs or bars. If you are hoping to meet a future girlfriend, stay away from them and try your luck during the day in normal places.

A recommended way to pick up great girls in Saigon is to use online dating apps. You can read my review about Online Dating Apps and Websites for more information. I wrote it for Indonesia but it is also valid or meeting girls in Vietnam.

Conclusion

I tried to make this review of Saigon's nightlife as long and detailed as possible. I focused mainly on the nightlife of District 1 but there are many more clubs and bars in District 7, District 3 and elsewhere. The districts of Go Vap, Tan Binh, District 12 and Hoc Mon are also full of local nightclubs, karaokes, massage parlours and bars.

Since the information provided on this report will most likely evolve, your help in keeping it updated will be much appreciated. Please don't hesitate to write a comment below if you can.

Foxy Spa (PIK)

Foxy Spa is another one of those new cheap massage parlors which offer a basic massage under 20$ (with Delta Spa kind of SOP) and an option for more which is much more pricey.

They have clean and complete facilities including pool (heated and cold), sauna and steam jacuzzi. If you only want to use the facilities, without massage, it will cost you Rp60,000.

The price for a 90min massage excluding tips is Rp190,000 in their standard room and Rp220,000 in the VIP room.

The SOP includes a plus plus. You can get more if you take the Foxy Pink Package (all-in) for Rp555,000 or the Foxy Gold Package (all-in with higher class girls) for Rp705,000.

Another popular spa in PIK area is Magnolia.

Queen's Head (Kemang)

Queen's Head Pub and Restaurant is one of the trendiest venues to have opened this year in Kemang. As there are already dozens of reviews of the place on internet, I'll just briefly write about the top 4 things you should know about it:

1) Don't visit Queen's Head for the food as they serve the usual overpriced bistro dishes that you get everywhere in Jakarta (read my review: Why The Food in Jakarta Restaurants is so Bad?). They propose a mix of Indian and Western food that will cost you at least 20$ per person for 2 courses without drinks. Not bad taste but I've had better for the price, especially in Kemang.

2) Impressive, unique design. Photos are the best way to describe it (they are all from Martin Westwood):
From Queen's Head Facebook
3) Created by a team of expats from Bali: Design by Rob Sample (also behind Jenja Club in Bali), management by Steve Collinson from Ku De Ta, menu by Chef James Tombleson (Deus Ex Machina and Mamasan).

4) Potentially one of the best bars in Kemang. Queen's Head was recently launched in late 2014 so it is a bit early to be definitive. Still, it could become a favorite hangout place for the expats living in the area who would normally go to Sudirman/Kemang for drinks. Their events so far were good and they've managed to attract the best crowd.

Dragon Spa (BSD and PIK)

Less than 15$ for a Delta-style massage? Yes it's possible!

I wrote a few days ago about Foxy Spa, a cheap massage parlour in PIK. Today, I learned about another place called Dragon Spa, which offer similar service. It is a super basic venue with currently two locations, one in PIK and one in BSD.

Dragon describes itself with the following words: "Service of Delta Spa with the prices of a Kaki Lima (cheap street food stalls)". Apparently, they only hire ex-masseuse from there who have finished their 3-year contract.

The price is Rp135,000 per session and Rp70,000 to extend. It is not a sex spa from what I could understand but a handjob is part of the SOP.

B'Fly is a cheap massage parlour located in Gading Serpong, Tangerang. Recently, the area has been experiencing an explosion in the number of budget spas competing with the more established brands such as Delta or My Place. Those places include Dragon Spa, Jupiter, Orchid or La Maestro in Alam Sutera.

B'Fly offers a 90 minutes massage with ++ for less than 15 dollars in the standard room (Rp135,000 at the time of writing). The deluxe room is just 2$ more and the VIP room 4$ extra.

There is no sauna, pool or jacuzzi but a cozy lounge with a pool table.

Modeling in Indonesia does not pay well so many girls cannot live from this activity only. For this reason, it is quite common to see them doing freelance work in clubs or bars, or during events.

If you see them, don't hesitate to go introduce yourself, they are usually friendly (like all Indonesians) and even if they are not interested, they should stay polite.
