9 Best Things to Do at Night in Jakarta

$

I recently wrote about the best things to do in Jakarta. In the following review, I will be more specific and focus about night-time activities.

A cliché used to describe Jakarta is that of "a city that never sleeps". While this could apply to any major capitals in the world, I think it is particularly accurate here. There is always some kind of life in Jakarta, whatever the time and whatever the location.

It is quite logical considering the city has one of the highest population densities in the world. Another reason is that there are a lot of Indonesians working long shifts or night shifts, especially small business owners and independent workers. As long as money can be made, they won't close shop or go home. This is why you can always get food, cigarettes or a taxi rides at anytime of the night.

For the traveler, the advantage of this situation is that there are a lot of things to do at night. Even better, if you go out after 9pm, you'll also enjoy less traffic, cooler temperatures and less pollution.

The following list will give you some ideas on how to spend time after sun sets in Jakarta. If you feel I forgot something, please don't hesitate to leave a comment below the article.

Street Food
Photo: Jonathan Perugia
Night-time is the best moment to go around and try some delicious Indonesian street food. Many of the small stalls on the sidewalk are actually only allowed to operate in the evening (to avoid disturbing pedestrians during the day).

My personal favorite location for street food in Jakarta is Jalan Mangga Besar, a red-light area busy with a eclectic mix of people. It's a great place to try some authentic Chinese food or some more unusual specialties like cobra and monkey.

If this is too far or too weird for you, Jalan Sabang and Jalan Wahid Hasyim in Central Jakarta are a good alternative. You'll also find many 24/7 restaurants in the area.

Rooftop Drinks
Photo: Sandrine VB
Jakarta is the 9th city with the most skyscrapers in the world and it is at night that the view is the most spectacular. The darkness hides all the city's flaws: The potholes, the dirt, the dust and the rust disappear, replaced by millions of colorful lights.

The best rooftops to enjoy the view of the skyline are Cloud or Skye. I give more recommendations in my review Top 10 Rooftop Bars in Jakarta as well. I also enjoy watching the city from the Burgundy Bar in Grand Hyatt even though it is not a rooftop.

Live Music, Theater and Concerts
Photo: Aura Kasih and Atika Dora
There are several great venues for listening to live music in Jakarta. Two of the most famous are B.A.T.S in Shangri-La and CJ's in Mulia. Both have a Western band playing Top 40 and pop/rock hits. They may not suit everyone's taste though as they attract a lot of working girls. Paulaner Brauhaus in Kempinski, Hard Rock Cafe in Pacific Place or Eastern Promise in Kemang are three more family-friendly options. I also like to visit the speakeasy Prohibition in Senayan Arcadia (make sure to check their secret live jazz room).

For cheaper drinks and a younger atmosphere, you can try any branches of Beer Garden.

In Menteng, Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) is an art complex popular with Indonesians. There are daily cultural performances (concerts, theater, movies, etc).

Clubbing and Karaoke
Normal clubs (meaning those that don't have a majority of prostitutes) are normally busy on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday night. You can read about my favorites here: Best Nightclubs in Jakarta.

The other days of the week, only the more naughty places are crowded. Apart from BATS and CJs mentioned above, you can try the famous one-stop entertainment centers like Malioboro, Alexis, King Cross, Emporium or Golden Crown. The bar Club 36 is also always very lively. North Jakarta is also where several 24h karaokes can be found.

Cinemas
Jakarta has excellent and modern cinemas that cost about half what you would pay in Europe. The CGV-Blitz chain has movies until 10pm during the week and until midnight on weekends.

Massage and Spas
Some massage parlors and spas close rather late in Jakarta (and I'm not talking about the naughty ones), especially those located in 5-star hotels: Bimasena (Dharmawangsa Hotel) and Willow Stream (Fairmont) close at 11pm, the spa at the Ritz-Carlton Mega Kuningan is open until 12am.

Shopping
Photo: Pasar Bary by Art535
All the high-end shopping malls close at 10pm in Jakarta but there are some more traditional markets (pasar) that stay open 24 hours, for instance the fish market of Angke Muara and the flower markets of Cikini and Rawa Belong. Closer from the city center, you also have Pasar Senen and Pasar Mampang Prapatan.

Exercise
Photo: Jeremy Tobing
Running/cycling at night or very early in the morning is very common among fitness enthusiasts in Jakarta. It is a way to avoid the heat, the traffic and the pollution. Popular running spots include the Monas, the Senayan Stadium and Ragunan Zoo.

A good way to meet Indonesians is to join a running club. Indorunners run every Thursday starting 7.30pm from FX Mall in Senayan. On the same day, you can also join the Nike Run Club.

Amazingly, there are also some 24h gyms in Jakarta such as Rai Fitness in Senopati, Clark Hatch in Sari Pan Pacific Hotel (which I heard is a gay hangout) and Club Olympus in Grand Hyatt.

Night Tourism
Photo: Bunderan HI by Inguna
Many tourist sights in Jakarta can still be visited at night. Taman Fatahillah, the Monas, Ancol or the Kota Intan Bridge remain crowded until very late. They attract middle class Indonesians, especially tourists, and all kind of street vendors. During Ramadhan, you can also visit the Istiqlal mosque all-night long.

Young Indonesians also like to hangout in some public areas like the Taman Suropati and Taman Menteng parks or around the Bunderan HI fountain.

How to Access Blocked Websites in Indonesia with LiquidVPN?

$
0
0
As of November 2016, there are are 766,000 porn websites blocked in Indonesia, but also 2,120 betting sites and about 100 radical websites. If you are a sex-addict, a gambler or a fanatic, you can make your life much less miserable by spending less than 5$ a month on a VPN.

I had already written about the best VPNs in Indonesia a few months ago, but since then I've been invited by a company called LiquidVPN to try their services (they have a 7 Days free trial). This review will be about my experience with them and how it helped me access blocked websites in Indonesia.

To make sure everyone can understand this post, I will keep my explanations as simple as possible, especially on the technicalities. Please leave a comment below if you think I left out something important or if you require additional information.

What is a VPN and why you need one?
A VPN client is a small software that you can install on your computer or your phone in order to access a VPN (or Virtual Private Network). When you connect to a VPN, you can surf the web anonymously, from another location than Indonesia and with all your data protected.

In the case of Liquid VPN, the software looks like this:
When you click on the connect button, you will access the internet through a server (here in Singapore). From this moment on, the websites you visit will not know that you are in Indonesia and instead they'll assume you are in Singapore. Since the connection is encrypted and anonymous, there is also no way for third parties to know who you are and what you are doing online.

The benefits of using a VPN in Indonesia are particularly important for 3 main reasons:

- Access websites blocked by the Indonesian government
Almost all porn websites are blocked in Indonesia, including the most famous ones like PornHub, XHamster, YouPorn or XVideos. As soon as a new one is popular, it will get banned almost immediately. Sex-oriented forums and dating sites like internationalsexguide.info or AdultFriendFinder may also be inaccessible.

- Bypass regional restrictions affecting Indonesia
Some internet content may not be available from Indonesia, not because of the government, but because of the content providers themselves. For instance, I cannot watch TV replays from a French TV channel because it only allows viewing from Europe. This is a common problem with many streaming services (Netflix, BeIN Connect, etc).

The leading betting website betfair.com also do not allow bets coming from Indonesia.

When using a VPN, it is very easy to bypass those restrictions as you can simply connect from a server in the country of your choice. This can be done in just one click:
Changing your location is very easy with Liquid VPN
- Protect your identity from the Electronic Information and Transaction Law of 2008
When you surf the web in Indonesia either from a laptop or a mobile phone, you are not anonymous. Your internet provider knows who you are and which websites you visit (even if you are in incognito mode). Worse, he may communicate that information to your employer or to the government. Western countries spy on the internet and there is no reason to think that Indonesia does not. If you are used to exchange sensitive information or to visit unorthodox websites, using a VPN is a necessary protection for your privacy.

Furthermore, after Indonesia voted the law on Electronic Information and Transaction in 2008, it has become more easy to accuse anyone of defamation, insult or blasphemy. If you enjoy political discussions about Indonesia on forums or on the comment section of news sites, I really advise to to remain as anonymous as possible.

If you are regularly traveling to Asia, the VPN will also help you in almost every countries as each have their own restrictions: China blocks pretty much everything (Google, Facebook, Youtube - and even Jakarta100bars.com), Malaysia blocks porn and opposition websites, Thailand blocks any websites criticizing the monarchy, etc. In almost all Asian countries, at least a few people have been arrested for writing "inappropriate" comments on Facebook.

Liquid VPN Features

Servers
I was not familiar LiquidVPN because it does not have (and it does not wish to have) servers in Indonesia. As they explained to me, they prefer having servers only in locations where the internet is not under attack from the local authorities. As I later found out, the fact that they don't have a server in Indonesia did not affect my speed at all (I connected from their Singapore server instead). The only issue I had was to connect to the streaming website LayarKaca21.tv as it is only accessible from Indonesia.

See more: Liquid VPN Servers Location.

Privacy
Liquid is one of the most serious options when it comes to the protection of their users' privacy. The main reason for that is that they do not keep logs from your connection, meaning that even they do not know which websites you visited. Also, they have a Modulating IP feature that modify your IP address continuously while you are surfing. This makes it impossible for anyone to track your whereabouts.

There are several privacy and protection features that would please more demanding users. I invite you to check this page for more information: Liquid VPN Features.

Accessing Blocked Website in Indonesia with Liquid VPN
My most important concern when using a VPN is: Can I surf any websites, even those that are blocked? Can I use any streaming websites (like Netflix)? Can I download movies and torrents fast?

I can answer YES to all of these questions. I managed (for research purpose of course) to access all porn websites I could find, and all the blocked websites mentioned above. I also could watch Netflix USA using my friend's account. I could connect to the torrent website kat.how and I download some movies (only legal ones naturally). Using Liquid VPN did not affect my speed (I was even watching YouTube at the same time). Finally, I visited the website of the French TV channels I mentioned earlier and I could watch all their videos without any restrictions on content.

Is is legal to use a VPN
YES. There are no laws forbidding the use of VPN in Indonesia, even to access illegal websites (like porn). You will not get into any troubles for using one.

Installing and Using Liquid VPN
I was planning to do a very detailed step-by-step guide on how to install and use Liquid VPN but it is so easy that all you need to make it work is a somewhat functioning brain.

Step 1: Register (7 Days Free Trial)
After you choose a Liquid VPN plan, you will be invited to create an account on my.liquidvpn.com. This is where you can update your information and set up your VPN (if you have special needs, otherwise just ignore it). This is also where you can contact the support team and read dozens of tutorials and guides.

Step 2: Install
After you've subscribed to Liquid VPN, you will need to download the VPN client software from your account on my.liquidvpn.com. You just need to click on "Download Liquid VPN" under the Dashboard tab:

I used LiquidVPN on a MacBook but it also works on a PC or an Android phone.

Step 3: Connect
Once the client software is installed and launched, all you will need to do is click on CONNECT and enter your login/password.

Note: You login/password for the VPN client can be found on the top bar of your account at my.liquidvpn.com.
Click on "Show VPN Credentials to see your password"
Step 4: Surf the web freely and anonymously
Once connected, you can now surf any blocked websites and nobody will know what you are visiting (including your boss, your internet provider, etc).

You may switch server location as often as you'd like to and you can also monitor in real-time your traffic speed.

Pricing
Liquid VPN has a similar pricing compared to other VPNs like Hide My Ass or Golden Frog (actually, it is even cheaper if you buy a 12-month plan).

There are 3 packages depending on the number of devices allowed. Here is a summary:

Sidekick Package (2 devices): 7$ per month or 4.75$/month with annual plan
Road Warrior Package (4 devices): 10$ per month or 5.75$/month with annual plan
Ultimate Package (8 devices): 18$ per month or 8.8$/month with annual plan

You can see more details by clicking on this link: Liquid VPN Plans & Pricing.

For most people, 2 devices are normally enough (laptop and phone). This means that with just 57$ (Sidekick package) per year, you can have access to any blocked websites in Indonesia. You'll also enjoy stress-free web browsing, knowing that no one can find out about your online activities.

In case you want to cancel your subscription, you can do it for free after 7 days. If you take a monthly plan, you can cancel any time also.

Guide to the Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) - 2016

$

0
The Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) is an electronic dance music festival happening every December in Jakarta. It used to be in Ancol but it has now moved to JiExpo in Kemayoran. It is organized by Ismaya, an Indonesian lifestyle group behind some famous nightclubs and bars like Dragonfly, Skye, Blowfish or Social House. It is also heavily sponsored by all kinds of brands and particularly cigarette manufacturers.

It is a mainstream event featuring mostly commercial DJs who play commercial EDM, Trance and Techno. Many of the world's most famous DJs have participated in DWP in the past few years, among which Tiesto, Skrillex, David Guetta, Martin Garrix, Axwell, Avicii and Calvin Harris.

DWP happens on the same weekend as Zoukout in Singapore. Both festivals share a very similar line-up and concept: The DJs who play on Friday in Jakarta will often play on Saturday in Singapore and vice versa. It is probably a way to split the cost of bringing expensive artists from Europe or America to Asia. The good news is that tickets are almost 50% cheaper compared to Zoukout and that you'll pay much less for food, drinks, transportation and hotels in DWP.

Buying Your Tickets to DWP 2016
The Garudha Stage at DWP2015
Check prices and packages
From the list of official ticket retailers provided by DWP, I found there was more availability and cheaper prices on BoBoBoBo.com. One of the reasons might be that this e-commerce site is partially owned by Ismaya.

The current fares on BoBoBoBo as of November 9th are the following:

1-Day Pass - GA (General Admission): Rp775,000
2-Day Pass - GA (General Admission): Rp1,1250,000

VIP Gold Ticket: 1-Day Pass - Rp1,500,000 and 2-Day Pass - Rp2,875,000
The VIP Gold Ticket gives you access to a special, faster entrance and a reserved area with better facilities closer from the DJs.

Diamond Packages: 1-Day Pass for 10-12 people + VIP location + 2 Bottles + Champagne - Rp35,000,000 up to Rp45,000,000

They also had some hotel packages but they are all fully-booked already. Anyway, the deals were not interesting. For my list of recommended place to stay near DWP, place scroll down below.

BoBoBoBo allows you to pay with Mastercard or Visa. If you have an Indonesian bank account, you may also make a bank transfer.

You can compare BoBoBoBo's prices with other official retailers such as Tiket.com or Rajakarcis. Another good option for foreigners is to use Viagogo as they allow payments with PayPal.

Once you've made your purchase, you will receive an electronic ticket that you must exchange with a special wristband. The exchange for the wristband can either be done on the spot on the day of DWP, or in advance in a location given by the management (Gandaria City Mall last year). The guidelines for that will be sent to you 2 weeks before the event.

The wrist band will then need to be activated to allow for entrance. Even with the wrist band, note that you'll still need to show an ID (passport, driving license, ID card) to get inside.

Warning: Do not wait until the last minute to buy your tickets as you may end up paying a higher price or worse, without one.

Beware of the fake DWP Website
The website on the picture below is FAKE. Do not buy your tickets from there. The complete list of valid ticket resellers is available at www.djakartawarehouse.com/ticket.
You can book on Tiket.com and BoBoBoBo.com safely as they are among the official retailers.

Food and Drinks
Food and drinks are not included in the price of a ticket and you cannot bring any from outside (nor cigarettes). This means you'll need to spend quite a bit of money on the spot. Even the water is not free (around Rp40,000 or US$3).

At DWP, you do not pay directly in cash. Instead, you buy "tokens" that you exchange at the food stands or shops. It is a way for them to avoid monkey business. You have Blue tokens, Silver tokens and Bronze tokens. They are non-refundable so you should be careful to buy only as little as you need.

The F&B area is well-organized in a foodcourt (Eats and Beats) and features several restaurants brands from Ismaya like Kitchenette, Pizza e Birra and Fook Yew. You can get proper meals there in a comfortable setting, with AC. The prices are OK (around Rp120,000 or US$9 for a meal with soft drinks) but you shouldn't expect great taste.

Alcohol drinks are less reasonably-priced: You'll need to spend Rp130,000 (US$10) per glass of liquor or cocktails and Rp90,000 (US$7) for a beer. A bottle of spirit will cost you Rp2,000,000 (US$150). You need to be at least 21 years old to buy alcohol (a valid ID is required).

If you are on a budget, I recommend you to grab a few bottles at the duty free shop and to drink with friends in your hotel before the event. Remember that it is a bit hard to buy alcohol in Jakarta as convenience stores are not allowed to sell them.

You should bring at least Rp1,000,000 (US$75) with you for a decent, intoxicated night out. Note that there are several ATMs inside if you need extra cash.

Location and Best Hotels Nearby
The location of the Djakarta Warehouse Project 2016 is now in Kemayoran, an area in the North of Jakarta about 1 hour away from the airport and 30 minutes (with normal traffic) from Plaza Indonesia.

Honestly speaking, it is a bit of a seedy area, not far from several hostess bars, strip clubs, red-light streets and naughty nightclubs. Some nearby hotels, such as Orchardz Industri or Orchardz Jayakarta, can even be considered to be brothels as their spas offer sexual services.

The closest "normal" hotels from JiExpo such as the MercureSwiss-Belinn, Best Western or the Holiday Inn are either already full or much more expensive than usual. Surprisingly, the Media Hotel is quite affordable at around Rp700,000 (US$50 - it is an old 5-star that used to be a Sheraton).

Another option is to go a bit further from Kemayoran in nearby districts. These are my recommendations for alternative places to stay within reasonable distance from DWP:

Mangga Dua: This is a middle class shopping district with several giant affordable malls. It is easy to reach from the airport and only 15 minutes away from JiExpo. It is also not too far from the touristic Old City of Jakarta (Kota Tua).

Mangga Besar: Only 10 minutes from JiExpo, this is a red-light area with tons of budget hotels, cheap street food and decadent nightlife spots. It's not very clean but it's colorful and affordable. The best hotels are the Swiss Belhotel (very near from Kemayoran) and the Hotel 88 Mangga Besar 62. 10-15 minutes from JiExpo.

Gajah Mada/Hayam Wuruk: This is the main road going from North Jakarta to the South. It is a convenient location as most attractions in Jakarta are along this axis. It can be a bit seedy at night (street prostitution, naughty nightlife, viagra stands, etc). There are a few new hotels there like the Santika Premiere, the Novotel, the All Seasons and the Ibis Harmoni. All of them offer excellent value-for-money. You'll need about 20 minutes to go to JiExpo from there.

Pasar Baru: Not a very interesting area except for a few attractions like the Istiqlal Mosque, the Pasar Baru market or the Monas. Mostly cheap hotels, including a branch of the Thai chain Red Planet. JiExpo is 15 minutes from there. It is near from the train station Gambir from where you can take trains to Yogyakarta, Bandung or Surabaya. There is also a public bus going from the airport to Gambir.

Sarinah/Plaza Indonesia: If you don't mind spending a bit more time in the transportation to go to DWP, I would recommend staying there. It is a central area close from the city's best malls, restaurants, bars and clubs. It is also much cleaner and safer. The Artotel and the Kosenda Hotel cost less than US$60/night and they both have trendy rooftop bars.

You can see more advice about hotels in Jakarta in Where to Stay in Jakarta and Jakarta Hotel Guide.

Getting Around in Jakarta
It is quite challenging, especially for first-time visitors, to get around in Jakarta. In terms of traffic, the worst time is every Friday after work. If you can avoid being on the road between 4pm and 8pm on that day, I urge you to do so. This means it is a good idea to take your Friday afternoon off and arrive at the airport before 2pm. On the contrary, Saturdays and Sundays are rather quiet and easier to circulate.

The cheapest way to go from the airport to the city center is by public bus. They are called DAMRI and they are easy to spot at the airport. There are 3 lines going to Central Jakarta: 1 for Kemayoran (the closest one), 1 for Gambir (near Pasar Baru) and 1 for Thamrin City (near Sarinah/Plaza Indonesia). The price is Rp40,000 (US$3) per person.

Taxis are more expensive but still very affordable. There are many waiting at the arrival and they'll cost you around Rp150,000 or US$11 (including the toll road) to the city center. Blue Bird and Express are the best companies but there aren't so many of them available. If you don't want to wait, it is safe to take any as long as they are in the official taxi stand and they agree to use the meter.

Uber and Grab Car are better and cheaper, but it can be tricky to get them at the airport. Regular taxi companies tend to chase them so you'll have to be discreet. They'll cost you only about Rp100,000 (US$7.5) during normal hours.

Within Jakarta, I personally use almost exclusively Grab Car or Uber. You can download both apps and switch from one to the other depending on the prices you get. When the traffic is too slow, I may also take moto-taxis from Gojek or GrabBike. It is very cheap and much faster.

Public transportation in Jakarta is not exactly tourist-friendly. There is a system of AC buses with dedicated lanes called Transjakarta from about 5am to 11pm. As you can see on the map, the line 2C goes until JiExp and you can take it from Gambir train station or Harmoni (a large hub with multiple connexions). You can also use the Line 1 to visit Jakarta as it stops near from many attractions. A ticket costs Rp3,500 (US$0.25).

I recently updated my article Getting Around in Jakarta and I invite you to read it for a more complete picture of the transportation system in Jakarta.

The Party
The Crowd
Last year, 75,000 people attended DWP, making it one of the largest festivals of the kind in the region. It attracts mostly a local audience, including Indonesians from provincial cities like Bandung, Surabaya or Yogyakarta. There is also a sizeable number of foreigners from nearby Asian countries who visit Jakarta just for the occasion (Malaysians in particular). According to official figures, foreigners account for 20% of the attendance.

The participants are from mid-to-upper level background and they are well-behaved. Since it is an exceptional event by Indonesian standards, people can be really excited and they'll plan the festival months ahead. Most are friendly, cool to hang out with and open to meet with fellow clubbers.

Note that the festival is only allowed to adults over 18 years old and that you aren't allowed to buy alcohol if you are under 21.

Meeting Indonesian Girls
If you are hoping to meet girls, there are a lot of pretty ones, including scores of SPGs (Sales Promotion Girls). Many will be with a group of friends so you should be careful when approaching them.

Dating sites and apps are a good way to get some contacts before arriving in Jakarta. Mention that you are going to DWP on your profile and you're pretty sure to match with a few party girls.

Dress Code
The dress code is relaxed. The coolest people will wear some kind of accessories (hats, glasses, etc...) and they'll be more busy updating their Instagram than dancing. Wear comfortable shoes, pants and t-shirts and bring along some changing clothes (lockers cost for Rp40,000 up to Rp100,000 - US$3-US$7.5).

The Performance Stages
The DJ performances are held on several distinct stages. The main one, called Garudha Land, features a giant sculpture representing the mythical Garuda bird. It is really world-class, with impressive visual effects that involve multicolor lighting, laser shows, fireworks, smoke and screens. The show is an important part of the party, just as much as the DJs.

Garudha Land is located outdoor which is quite a bet considering December is the rainy season in Jakarta.

Fortunately, the smaller stages are under a roof with AC. For Djakarta Warehouse Project 2016, there will be a special stage featuring the festival "Life in Color" as a part of their worldwide Kingdom tour. The main particularity of Life in Color is that multicolor paint is thrown at the audience. It is a completely different set up and it can be considered a festival within the festival.

I'm not sure yet about the other stages for 2016 but they might include the same as last year: Neon Jungle, Mad Decent and Darker Side.

Schedule of DJ sets
The timing of each set will be known early December only. The first DJs start at 4pm (local ones) and the last ones end at 4am. It is best to arrive early (before 7pm) to avoid entrance queues (though at that time you'll get the worst part of Jakarta traffic).

DJ Line Up DWP 2016
The line up for this year's DWP includes several famous names of the commercial EDM, trance and techno scene. Most of them rank high on the DJ Mag Top 100 and they are regulars of all the big festivals like Tomorrowland or Ultra.

The following names have been announced so far:

Hardwell (No. 3 on Top 100 DJ Mag)

Martin Garrix (No. 1 on Top 100 DJ Mag)

DJ Snake

Zedd

Yellow Claw
Some other famous names are Carl Cox, Tiga, KSHMR, W&W, Yellow Claw or Alan Walker (see full DWP 2016 Line Up).

There are also performances by the sexy dancers of CyberJapan.

Travel Insurance and Safety
You should have a proper travel insurance when traveling to Indonesia. It is not expensive for just two days and you'll save yourself a lot of trouble in case of accident, disease, cancellation or loss of personal stuff. If you are a foreigner, you can get a quote in a few seconds on WorldNomads.

If you are Indonesian, you can get an even cheaper Travel Insurance with the website Travellin (it belongs to Adira, part of Danamon Bank). You can insure yourself for 2 days for just Rp24,000 but naturally you'll get less guarantees (see more details about the benefits here: Domestic Gold).

The Level Nightclub, Bar, Karaoke (Makassar)

$

The Level is a modern one-stop entertainment complex in Makassar featuring a restaurant, a coffee shop, a bar, a nightclub and a karaoke. Built on 5 floors, it is located on the popular Losari beachfront right next to the Aryaduta Hotel (Rp600,000 per night on Agoda).

It is one of most famous nightlife spots in the city and one of my top recommendations for hangout.

If you need a place to stay nearby, I advise you to consider the Novotel Grand Shayla (Rp600,000 per night), the Ibis Makassar (Rp300,000 per night) or the Favor Hotel (Rp250,000 per night).

Most outlets in Level have a nice view on the sea. For this reason, you can go there late afternoon as well to enjoy a drink or smoke a shisha (especially on the terrace). They have Western and Asian food too, quite more expensive than the average for Makassar and not particularly tasty. A plate of spaghetti costs Rp60,000 and a steak Rp140,000.

The club itself is quite small, with a 400-person capacity on two floors (the second one is more a mezzanine actually). It is not particularly original apart from its huge bay window. There are no dancefloor, only tables and sofas. You normally have live music and DJ every night, with a special event every 2 weeks (famous band or DJ, fashion show). The 10-room karaoke has hostesses/lady companions that you may bring to the club to drink with you.

Though the karaoke is a bit naughty, there are still many "normal" people who visit the club. In the restaurant in particular, it is not rare to see female customers wearing the jilbab.

Opening Hours:
Restaurant and Coffee shop (1st floor) - Every day from 10am to 2am
Bar/Lounge/Terrace (2nd floor) - Every day from 4pm to 2am
Karaoke (3rd floor) - Every day from 12am to 2am
Rooftop/Club (4 and 5th floor) - Every day from 4pm to 2am

Happy Hours:
Buy 1 Get 1 Beer from 10am until 11am (restaurant), from 4pm to 11pm (bar and lounge), from 8pm to midnight (club and karaoke)

Loligo Club, Karaoke and Hotel (Senggigi - Batu Layar)

Loligo is a new nightclub, karaoke and hotel that opened in Senggigi in July 2016. It is more modern than the average for Lombok standards, yet until now it isn't very crowded nor happening.

They have live music and DJs every day starting 9pm until closing time. You can check their Facebook below for events as they may have sexy dancers or famous guest DJs/bands (Indonesian).

As they are trying to fill up the place, they are doing rather interesting promotion deals: The entry is free and you can get a vodka bottle for less than Rp600,000. A cocktail will cost you about Rp90,000 net.

Be careful, there is also a Loligo Spa (which is a plus plus spa actually) but it is in a different location in Senggigi and with a different owner.

Old City Nightclub and Karaoke (Jakarta)

Old City is a nightclub and karaoke located in North Jakarta, about 200 meters from the Fatahillah Museum and 500 meters from Colosseum.

I had already visited it in 2009 when it was called Athena and to be honest it hasn't changed much. It is a hardcore party spot with deafening techno music, a dark vibe and drugs aplenty. It is a bit dodgy, especially the surroundings, and you may bump into a few weird customers, but it is still safe to visit.

There is only one main room which is quite big and decorated with a classic Roman style. The karaoke is rather old but it is affordable. It has lady companions and the waiters probably sell more ecstasy than beer.

I saw some flyers about sexy dancers and topless female DJs but they didn't seem to be updated and I'm not sure the events still happen today.

While I would not have recommended this place a few months ago, I would say it could be an alternative to the now-defunct Mille's. If only they could have more Western music it would be perfect as an after hour underground nightclub.

Opening Hours:
Everyday until 6AM (according to the security guard who told me)

Malibu Café & KTV (Makassar Mulia Hotel)

Malibu Café and Karaoke in Makassar is a bit of a naughty nightlife spot. It is located in Jalan Nusantara, a street where I counted at least 20 prostitute bars (full list below), on the 5th floor of a seedy hotel (Makassar Mulia).

Inside the club is actually not as bad as I expected. It is not particularly luxurious, but it is decent with proper sound and lighting. There are some girls, obviously lady companions for the karaoke, but they are not too pushy with clients.

You have a main stage with a live band, replaced by a DJ during breaks. The music is western (no dangdut, no funky house) so it is quite enjoyable. You also have sexy dancers wearing bikinis/bras.

One of the particularities of Malibu is their iconic "Hobbit Brothers", two small people who dance and entertain the crowd a few times in the evening. It is a bit embarrassing to watch it but in the end, they get a salary out of it. It reminded me of Manila's famous Midget Boxing Bar.
Red light district of Jalan Nusantara Makassar:
Malibu is in the middle of the prostitution area of Makassar, which is basically a 300-meter street with small cafés, dangdut pubs, karaokes, live halls, massage parlors and clubs. They are rather low-end and target locals. There are several short-time and girl-friendly hotels nearby but I'd recommend you to stay in the Swiss-Belhotel instead. It is only 5 minutes away by foot and it has its own nightclub (Zona).

Here is the list of the venues: Padi's Executive Karaoke, Lips Karaoke, Mekar Cafe, Mabua Cafe, Raja Mas, Studio 86, Venus, Melody Karaoke, MM Cafe, Makassar Pub, 7 & 7 Cafe, Andre Karaoke, Adipura Cafe I, II, III, Delima Cafe, Leo Karaoke, Cafe Dangdut, Top 9 Cafe, Taman Impian Cafe, Ariel Karaoke, Kafe Baji, Mirama, Dhika Karaoke, Cindy Karaoke, Bintang Executive, New Melody Karaoke, D'Everyday Live Music and Karaoke, Ratu 2 Café, Lae Lae Karaoke, Mega Café, Metro Sulawesi.

Zona Café - Nighclub - Makassar

Zona is one of the most famous nightclubs in Makassar. It is located on the seafront next to Swiss-Belhotel (Rp500,000/night) and walking distance from the city's top attractions like Fort Rotterdam and Losari Beach (and also the red-light district on Jalan Nusantara). Two more recommended guest-friendly hotels nearby are the Aston (Rp600,000/night) or Whiz Prime (Rp250,000/night).

Zona Café is surprisingly quite modern even though it was opened 7 years ago already. It features giant LCD screens, a laser show, a good sound system and even some pyro. It is not so big (maybe 400 people capacity) with 2 VIP sofa space at the entrance and on the side. I like that their bar is in the middle of the room so even if you are alone you can still chat with some other people.

Zona Makassar functions like 90% of the clubs in Indonesia: You have a live band and a DJ every night, some sexy dancers and several lady companions (called Guest Relation Officers or GRO here). On Saturday, there is generally either a famous band or a DJ from Jakarta. Visitors come with a group of friends and stay between themselves around a table. They order bottles or beer towers, not individual drinks. The staff is friendly and performs a show once a night, including the bartenders (bar flair).

It is busy on weekends (and to a lesser extent on Wednesdays) but the rest of the week is typically quiet.

Some of the bands may sing rather slow-paced love songs, especially the famous ones on Saturday. If that's not your thing, it is best to visit it after 2am.

There is a small café outside called Coffee Ping. It is a good place to chat with other party-goers.

Entrance fee:
Rp75,000 on weekends (FDC with 1 drink included) - Free for girls
Rp150,000 for special event (Ticket - no drinks included)

Buying Alcohol in Jakarta - Liquor, Wine, Beer

$
0
0
Buying alcohol in Jakarta used to be an unpleasant chore, especially after the law banning the sale of beer in minimarts was passed in 2015.

With the development of internet and delivery services, it has become much easier as long as you know the right websites and application. I personally use HappyFresh and Gojek, but there are other services that I will describe below.

For those who are still living in 2010, I will also give you the best "brick and mortar" wine and spirit shops, particularly those that are located in Central and South Jakarta.

To give you an idea of where it is cheaper, I've added the prices of popular bottles. You can comment on these or suggest a better place to buy beer, liquor or wine in the comment section below.

What to Know Before Buying Alcohol in Jakarta
Import Tax
The import tax is 150% on spirits and 90% on wine. This means you will pay at least twice as much for any bottle that was not produced in Indonesia. If you buy an imported bottle for less than Rp250,000, it is suspicious and you can assume it won't be genuine alcohol.

Locally-Produced Spirits, Wines and Beers
There are a few local alcohol brands that have cheaper prices. For wines, the most famous is Hatten which grows its own grapes in Bali. You can buy some of their bottles online or at their Kemang boutique for around Rp200,000. The same company owns Two Islands which makes wine from imported Australian grape juice. It is more expensive (around Rp290,000 per bottle).

There are several lager beer producers in Indonesia. The most famous is Bintang, a subsidiary of Heineken but you also have other players like Prost, Anker or Bali Hai. A 33-cl can of Prost beer will normally cost you around Rp16,000.

You also have Indonesian alcoholic specialties like arak (rice alcohol), tuak (palm wine) and anggur hitam (black wine) but I've rarely seen them sold in Jakarta.

Genuine / Fake / Illegal Bottles
Having spent some time in the hospitality industry in Indonesia, I know that a large number of imported bottles sold in shops, restaurants, bars and clubs have entered the country illegally and avoided proper taxation. This does not mean that they are fake but simply that no import taxes were paid. There are so many intermediary and such a love for cheating in Indonesia that even in high-end venues you cannot be sure that the bottles are legal.

Fake bottles are a much larger problem as they can be dangerous, if not lethal. As I mentioned before, spirit bottles that cost well under Rp250,000 are very suspicious and unless they are sold by a reputed company or in the duty free, they should be avoided. The same logic applies in bars if your glass or your cocktail costs less than Rp50,000.

Legal Drinking Age
You must be over 21 years old to buy alcohol in Indonesia. Most venues will ask for your ID before handling you the liquor. Surprisingly, in bars and nightclubs it is much easier to get alcohol even if you're not 18 yet.

Buying Alcohol Online or with Delivery Apps
The smartest and cheapest way to get alcohol in Jakarta is to shop online. There are A LOT of options but I'll just give you the best ones below.

HappyFresh allows you to buy groceries from your mobile phone or your laptop and to get them delivered to your door within a couple hours. They have a partnership with the liquor store chain Red & White so you can get the same prices as in the shops. HappyFresh can also get beer delivered from several supermarkets (including Grand Lucky SCBD). You can choose cash on delivery.

The service costs Rp20,000 per delivery and it is available during the normal operating hours of the shops (until 10pm).

Example of prices for HappyFresh delivery from Red & White (November 2016):
Jack Daniels 700ml = Rp790,000
Smirnoff Vodka Flavored 750ml = Rp590,000
Ketel One 750ml = Rp825,000

HappyFresh delivery from Grand Lucky SCBD
Bintang Large 620ml = Rp31,300
Prost Beer Large 620ml = Rp30,200
Bintang Small 330ml = Rp18,600
Prost Beer Small 330ml = 16,800

Gojek is another option if you don't want to download HappyFresh. The service is called Go-Mart and they also have a partnership with Red & White (same price as the shops). The cost of delivery depends on the distance (normally between Rp10,000 and Rp20,000). You can use Go-Pay for payment or cash on delivery.

Example of prices for Go-Mart delivery from Red & White (November 2016)
JW Black Label 750ml = Rp940,000
Smirnoff Red 750ml = Rp290,000
Ciroc Vodka 750ml = Rp1,150,000

Gojek delivery from Drink Corner
Bintang Beer 6X330ml = Rp116,000 (Rp19,333 per unit)

This website belong to Red & White and features more choices compared to Gojek and HappyFresh. The price are the same but the delivery fee is higher (Rp50,000) and the goods may take up to 4 days to arrive. You can pay with credit card, American Express, PayPal or bank transfer.

A much cheaper option for buying alcohol in Jakarta is to visit the online store Mambo Bodega. They are part of a bigger group that is licensed to import alcohol, hence reducing the number of intermediaries and in fine allowing them to be one of the cheapest retailers in the city.

They offer free same-day delivery in Jakarta if you purchase at least 6 bottles. Otherwise, they'll send the bottles with Gojek which is pretty cheap anyway (departing from Rasuna Epicentrum). Cash on delivery is available from 9am - 4pm and after that the payment must be done through a BCA transfer. They close at 10pm.

Their prices are lower on Facebook and you can directly book using the "Shop" button. Some of their price:
Jack Daniels 700ml = Rp425,000
JW Black Label 750ml = Rp525,000
Absolut Blue Vodka 750ml = Rp360,000
Greygoose Vodka = Rp750,000
Jacobs Creek Chardonnay = Rp240,000

They have great prices, among the lowest in Jakarta, and it is a trusted website. Limited choice of spirits and wines but they have enough to make you happy (rum, bourbon, scotch, red and white wine, champagne, vodka, gin, cognac, etc). The only problem is that they may take time to deliver (from 2 to 7 days). You can pay by credit card or bank transfer.

Jack Daniels 700ml = Rp455,000
JW Black Label 750ml = Rp525,000
Belvedere Vodka 750ml = Rp600,000
Bacardi Gold Rum 750ml = Rp324,000
Moet Chandon Imperial 750ml = Rp975,000

My friend has used this website several times and he says he got delivered fast each time. Delivery is free if you spend more than Rp2,000,000 (otherwise Rp50,000). Payments can be made with bank transfer or through Paypal.
Jack Daniels 700ml = 550,000
JW Black Label 750ml = Rp600,000
Absolut Blue Vodka 750ml = 450,000
Greygoose Vodka = Rp600,000
Jacobs Creek Merlot Red Wine = Rp350,000
Moet Chandon Champagne Imperial 750ml = 1,000,000

Other websites:
There are many other websites offering online delivery that I haven't tried yet. Some have good reviews on the internet, other are unknown. It is quite a bet to use them so I would advise to buy only one or two bottles to try at first. Be wary if the prices are too low. If you've had a good or bad experience with them, don't forget to comment below.

WineSpiritShop (Indonesian): You can order with them through line @winespiritshop. Prices 10-20% lower than the competition but I can't guarantee that the alcohol is genuine. They have positive reviews on kaskus forum so it does not seem to be a scam. Payment with BCA/Mandiri transfer. Delivery in two days for Rp35,000-Rp50,000.

Indoliquor, Liquor Shop 88, Little Wine Shop, Rumah Wine, Wine Shop IndonesiaBatavialiquor (only in Indonesian): Not first choices as they aren't so cheap, have limited payment methods or do not offer one-day delivery.

Wine Line: They have fair prices and they possess an actual store in Pluit but they didn't reply the message I sent them. They also sell soju, sake, choya and cigars.

Buying Alcohol From Instagram
This is not a method I've personally tried but a friend told me she buys her booze on AlcoholSupply and BirDelivery (for beer only, interesting because they have a last order at midnight).

Buying Alcohol From Duty Free Shops
If you are not interested to buy online, you can still go to brick-and-mortar shops. The cheapest ones are the Duty Free Shops though they have rather strict rules for non-diplomatic passport holders. Indonesians cannot shop there.

DFS
DFS has two locations in the airport and in Lotte Shopping Avenue (near Mega Kuningan). In the Lotte branch, you are allowed to buy alcohol but you'll only be allowed to pick it up at the airport only, after you've passed immigration. Diplomats can go home with their purchase though. Moral of the story: Forget it unless you work in an embassy.

There are 3 shops in South Jakarta that have more relaxed rules. They are not supposed to sell to regular passport holders, but they might still do it on occasion. It is best to call them in advance to ask about their stocks and confirm their opening hours.

Eco Prima Duty Free Kemang
Jalan Kemang Raya 8A
Phone number: +62 (0) 21 7179 3935

In front of Swiss-Belhotel Arion, it is open every day except Sunday. They will give a 10% discount to holder of diplomatic passport but others can shop there too (though in limited quantities). The prices are in dollar but still generally lower than elsewhere. No delivery available.

Tama Duty Free
Jalan Kemang I No 8
Phone number: +62 (0) 21 7198 558

RAM Duty Free (Rejeki Artha Mulia)
Jalan Ampera Raya No 4A
Phone number: +62 (0) 21 782 9512

A discreet shop on Jalan Ampera Raya, not far from Rolling Stones Café.

Buying Alcohol From Other Shops
Supermarkets
Supermarkets generally only sell drinks with less than 5% alcoholic content (= beer). I've noticed the following prices near my place:

Hypermart: Small Bintang = Rp18,900, Small Prost = 16,100
Carrefour: Small Bintang = Rp19600, Small Prost = 16,800
Food Mart: Small Bintang = 20,200, Small Prost = 17,200

Many of the supermarkets located within malls in South Jakarta have a spirit and wine shop attached, for instance Red Line in Grand Lucky Supermarket in SCBD.

Other interesting supermarkets for expats are Hero (Jalan Terogong), Toko Rejeki (Harmoni), Foodhall (Senayan City, Plaza Indonesia and Pondok Indah Mall) or KemChicks (Kemang, Pacific Place).

Dedicated wine and spirit shops
Red and White has several stores within high-end shopping malls in Jakarta in Pondok Indah Mall (Street Gallery), Lippo Kemang, Kota Kasablanka, Dharmawangsa Square, Pacific Place or Ratu Plaza. They can also be found in housing complexes such as Kemang Mansion, Green Lake Sunter and South Quarter Cilandak.

The prices in their shops are identical to delivery prices on HappyFresh, Gojek or their own website Minuman

Restaurants and bars
If you don't mind paying more, there are wine shops inside some trendy restaurants and bars. The most famous is the chain Vin + with locations in Kemang, Senayan Arcadia, Central Park (Taman Anggrek) and Pondok Indah Mall (Street Gallery).

You can also go to Social House in Grand Indonesia or to one of the three branches of Cork & Screw (Jalan Rasuna Said, Plaza Indonesia, Pacific Place).

If you stay in North Jakarta, you have Chamber of Liquor in Kelapa Gading and Vam House in Pluit.

How Life in Jakarta Turned Into a Nightmare for George Pritting

$

Today I want to share a story happening right now in Jakarta.

We all remember the Ice Bucket Challenge. It was a worldwide fundraising effort to fight against ALS (or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), a chronic and rare disease that affects the neuroglial system and leads to a complete paralysis. It had a huge impact and massive funds were raised at that time.

It hasn’t reached George Pritting yet.

The thing is George is not really as sympathetic and fun as the challenge. To be honest, George is not really friendly:  He insults people, screams and requests help that no one wants to give. George is not really "bankable" i.e. the kind of guy that generates a lot of empathy. Worse, he has even been suspected of scams.

The reality though is that George is ill and stuck in the middle of Jakarta suffering from ALS and nobody seems to care. Every day his condition is getting worse. He cannot walk and he has difficulties for eating and breathing.

I am writing an article about his story today to highlight the gap between all the nice intentions we read every day and the fact that someone is left to die alone because of his personality / communication skills.

Yes George is quite antipathetic but does that justify to let him die in the middle of nowhere far from his family?

Let’s go back in time.

Originally from Tennessee in the US, attracted by a different culture & seeking new life - George decided in 2012 to take on a new adventure: He flew to Jakarta. Quickly, he took on a the position of a teacher for a small wage. All was going well. He got married with a local Indonesian, had a daughter, and was happily running a new chapter of his life.

Everything went well until 2013 when he was diagnosed with ALS. Thunder.

He ended up losing his job, his wife and his daughter, while all the money he had saved was going into day-to-day treatment.

As of now, George is stuck in a kos in the suburb of Jakarta with no money. Yet, he needs special assistance, nurses and medical equipment to be able to go home. The doctors are saying that in his condition he cannot travel without a dedicated flight and crew. The trip is worth 140,000 USD that the embassy is not in a position to cover.

This is a what George said himself about his condition:
“I have lost every function of my body. My arm and half of my body is paralyzed and I don’t have any money to cover my daily needs anymore. To be honest, I am not smelling great and each day is much more than ice bucket on the face. I am dying second per second. I just want to see my country again, my family and die as a human being. Really nice people are helping me here on the day to day but my condition requires professional help and environment. The US Embassy has been visiting me and is regularly trying to help me but they are unable to organize the repatriation. I have only one wish: To go home and to see my country again”
Tata, George's help said:
“George is in critical condition, he cannot walk, he needs permanent assistance. He went to the hospital as he couldn't go to the toilet for one week, his body needs professional care. His leg circulation is getting worse and worse. Sometimes he doesn’t get out for months and he is depressed. I'm trying my best but George can be really annoying, nervous and insulting. I am thinking about giving up.”

What can we do to help him?

A few things
⇨ Email him or visit him. For those living in Jakarta, you can contact him via his Facebook Page. Even a simple message will cheer him up.

⇨ Share that article on your social networks

⇨ Share that article with people who can create some kind of buzz among important people

Osmosis Nightclub (Aston Hotel Cirebon)

Osmosis is a live music bar and nightclub located in Cirebon, about 3 hours by train from Jakarta. It is inside the Aston Hotel and Convention Center on Jalan Brigjen Dharsono.

I was surprised to see that there are several clubbing options in the city: You also have Rockstar Mixology or Mithas Pub for instance. None of these is as happening as what you would find in Jakarta, but at least they provide decent entertainment.

Osmosis is a clean, modern and intimate space with live bands and DJs every night. They have a different theme every day (though they may change it from time to time): Monday is a student night, Tuesday is for old school music, Wednesday is for special event/open format, Thursday is for classic rock, Friday is for hip-hop/Rn'B/trap. On Saturday, they'll often have a more famous live band or DJ, sometime from Jakarta.

The club has a few pretty waitresses/GRO who are not prostitutes. Apart from them, there aren't that many girls around. No entrance fee for on regular days.

Aston also has a poolside pub with live sports called Oasis.

Masters Sports Bar (Bellagio - Mega Kuningan)

Masters Sports Bar and Restaurant is located on the ground floor of Bellagio Mall in Mega Kuningan. The place looks unassuming from the outside and you may have already walked past without noticing it. Should you decide to step inside, you'll be surprised to find a spacious 350m2 area with a long wooden bar, a 50-seat dining area, 2 professional electronic dart boards and 5 full-size tournament pool tables. Unlike the trendy venues nearby like Loewy or Basque, Masters has a much more laid-back atmosphere, perfect if you are looking for a quiet place to chill after work. Later in the evening, it gets a bit more loud and busy, especially on Friday and Saturday as they have a live band.

It is one of the few dedicated sports bars in Jakarta and it features at least 8 different TVs, including two massive HD projector screens near the entrance. It must be among the largest ones I've seen anywhere in Asia. If there is any live sports event in the world, you are pretty sure you can watch it in Masters: Football, Rugby, AFL, Racing, NBA, NFL, MLB, etc. They may also change their schedule to make sure you can watch special events like the Superbowl, the Olympics or the Fifa World Cup. Some screens also have music videos from an eclectic playlist of over 600 titles (pop, rock, Top 40, etc).

One of the particularities of Masters Sports Bar is that it is owned by a group of Jakarta expats who each have their own day jobs. I've met a few of them and it was refreshing to see how passionate they are. They come from different backgrounds and nationalities (Swedish, Indonesian, Malaysian, Nepalese, Denmark and Irish), but they share the same goal: Having the most friendly and comfortable bar for them to meet, drink and watching sports. The result is that Masters feels particularly homey and that a lot of their customers are regulars (sometimes with their families).

The crowd is quite diverse, but I would say there are about 50% expats and 50% Indonesians, most of whom are over 30 years old.

One of the best reasons to visit Masters is to play billiard. There is one table near the entrance and four more in the back. For casual players, you can use them for free as long as you make a purchase. Some competitive players train there as well, including several teams that participate in the Jakarta Pool League. There are seats all around the pool tables so it is nice to just watch (better) people play as well. Masters arranges pool events & tournaments on a regular basis, you can find more information about this on their very busy Facebook page (see below).

Regarding the food, they serve all the traditional pub fare for a reasonable price considering the area.

Light meals, soups, sandwiches, salads and snacks cost about Rp50,000 to Rp80,000 (Nachos, Wings, Spring Rolls, Wedges, etc...). Thai and Indonesian food cost between Rp50,000 and Rp100,000. Pizzas and Western main courses cost between Rp70,000 to Rp150,000. Their imported steaks (from US and Australia) are a bit more expensive as usual in Indonesia (starting at Rp200,000).

They also have lunch specials on their pies, hotdogs and Indonesian food with a fixed price of Rp50,000++ from 11am to 3pm.

The beer is rather cheap, starting at Rp38,000 for a Prost 33cl. You can see below the whole beer menu with happy hour prices (HH = 4pm to 9pm):
Cocktails and hard liquor glasses are priced between Rp70,000 and Rp90,000 per unit while a bottle of Jack Daniels will cost you only Rp1,000,000.

Every Thursday evening is Ladies Night (from 5pm to 8pm) with a free flow house pours for girls.

Square Nightclub and KTV (Batam)

Square is a high-end nightclub and karaoke located inside the I Baloi Hotel in Batam. It is about 10 minutes away by car from Kampung Bule in Nagoya and 5 minutes from BCS Mall by foot.

Along with Titanium, Square is one of the favorite nightlife venues in Batam among the local elite (a lot of Indonesian-Chinese inside). It is clean, modern, with a proper lighting and sound system, similar to the one you could find in Jakarta. There is a bit of a naughty side as usual in the karaoke (lady companions), but it is rather discreet. Plenty of normal girls visit Square, but I wouldn't go as far as saying it is a pick up place because most of them are visiting with their own group of friends.

The entrance fee is Rp150,000, which is the most you'll pay in Batam, and it entitles you to one free drink. There isn't much of a dancefloor so you should try to get a table near the main area, between the bar and the DJ. If the place is crowded, you'll probably need to buy a bottle for that (around Rp1M).

During normal weekdays, they have a resident live band and a resident DJ taking turn every 30/60 minutes. The band plays Top 40 and classic songs, the DJs mix trap/EDM music. On weekends, they often have more famous artists from Jakarta. It's best to check the schedule in advance on Facebook to avoid bad surprises: The first time we visited, the band was terrible and we got bored after 30 minutes. They also have hot dancers called the "Squarelicious babes", who perform with sexy clothes or bikinis.
Karaoke:
Open from 8pm to 3/4am, from Rp600,000 for standard room to Rp3,000,000 for VVIP (up to 40 people).

Note about the hotel
My friends were staying in I Baloi Hotel but unfortunately, they were not entitled to a free entrance. Like everybody, they had to pay Rp150,000 to get in. Still, they strongly recommended it as one of the best places to stay in Batam, with a huge swimming pool and a lot of excellent street food nearby. The room rates are reasonable as well. You can check the prices here: I Baloi Hotel Batam.

Mitra is a mid-size club & karaoke which is located in a building right next to the more upscale Muse. It is within walking distance (5 minutes) from the hotels Aston and Swiss Belhotel that are both under 50$ per night.

Its concept is basically the same as Muse, but it targets a more "local" and less sophisticated crowd. The bands will play a lot more Indonesian songs for instance and the DJs will mix hardcore "funky house". There are some girls as well, most of which are lady companions, but again not as pretty as the ones in the club next door.

The advantage is that it is a bit cheaper and that you are most likely to become an attraction if you visit it. I'm not sure about their weekly program, but on Saturdays at least they have sexy dancers.

Mithas is a bar, nightclub and karaoke located in Hotel Apita in Cirebon (a 3-star property, girl-friendly).

It is mostly a place to listen to live music, every day starting 10pm (combined with a DJ). It is not really stylish and it is starting to get old, especially compared to other venues like Osmosis or Rockstar. If you are looking for girls though, there are quite a few lady companions you can invite for a drink or to sing with you.

It is better to visit on weekends as they sometimes have more famous DJs and musicians (and also sexy dancers). Hip hop night on Friday. For special events, the entrance fee is Rp75,000 or Rp1,000,000 to get a standing table.

5 Best Sports Bars in Jakarta

$

Indonesians are really crazy about sports, and particularly football and moto racing. Even in remote locations, you will meet taxi drivers and shop keepers who know about your favorite team more than you do.

Most of all, they love to cheer together or "nonton bareng" as they call it. This is why you will find at least a TV with sports in almost every bar in Jakarta (and even inside nightclubs sometimes).

If you are interested in watching sports that are more popular among the expat crowd (Rugby, AFL, NFL, NBA, MLB, etc...), it is probably best to visit a proper sports bar. There are several in the city, many of which are located in the South (Kemang, Mega Kuningan).

My 5 favourite venues for watching sports in Jakarta are the following:

Masters Sports Bar (Bellagio Mall)
Opened in 2015, Masters is one of the newest sports bars in Jakarta. It is owned by a group of expats (and one Indonesian) that you are likely to meet at their bar on weekend nights. They have two giant projector screens, probably the largest in Jakarta, featuring sports and music videos. In the back, you'll also find 4 professional pool tables that you can use for free. Their prices are affordable considering the area (around Rp40,000 for a beer) and they serve good food.

See my complete review: Masters Bellagio - Mega Kuningan.

Eastern Promise (Kemang)
Eastern Promise, generally called EP, is one of the oldest expat bars in Jakarta. It has several rooms, including a restaurant and a beer garden (with live music). There is also a small sports bar with a few TVs and a large screen. It is often packed and popular with girls as well, particularly the "bule" hunting type.

See my complete review: Eastern Promise Jakarta

Aphrodite (Taman Rasuna)
A mix between a restaurant and a bar, Aphrodite has been a favourite of the expat crowd for more than 15 years. This is mainly because of its proximity with the Taman Rasuna tower complex and because they are known to offer good-value Western food. They have TVs all around the main room playing sports (usually football, rugby, cricket, moto GP, etc...). You can also play pool and darts. There are some unattached ladies as well.

See my complete review: Aphrodite Jakarta

Fez (Kemang)
Owned by the same group behind Aphrodite, Fez can get very busy whenever there is an important game (especially if it involves an Australian team). They have a rather cheap menu with some Indian specialties from the Kinara restaurant.

Jimm's Sports Café (Bellagio Mall)
Just 100 meters from Masters, Jimm's Sports Café is a small venue with a clean look. The few times I've been there, the crowd was mostly Indonesian with only about 25% of expats. They could probably add a few more large screens, but I enjoy the cozy atmosphere.

Other Recommended Sports Bars in Jakarta
There are a lot more venues to watch sports all over Jakarta. The ones above are my favourite but you can also visit the following:

Central Jakarta

Kemang

Senayan

Mega Kuningan

Pondok Indah

Rasuna Said

Cilandak

In Lounge Nightclub and Karaoke (Madiun)

In Lounge is a one-stop entertainment venue with a live music nightclub, a restaurant and a karaoke. It is located in the Javanese city of Madiun which is between Yogyakarta and Surabaya. A central place to stay there is the Amaris Hotel, just 5 minutes from the train station and from In Lounge.

I was expecting Madiun to be a small conservative city with no nightlife, but I was wrong. While In Lounge is not that sophisticated nor original, it is well-managed and decent to party. They have live music, sexy dancers and a DJ every day. The most happening nights are Thursday (campus night), Friday and Saturday. There is also a ladies night on Tuesday with free flow beers for girls. Free entrance for all every day except if there is a special event (guest DJ or band from Jakarta).

They have 3 kinds of karaoke rooms (Small for 6 pax, Medium for 8 pax and Large for 12 pax) with prices ranging from Rp60,000 per hour until Rp100,000 per hour.

Example of prices:
Local whisky for Rp400,000 per bottle
Jack Daniels Rp850,000 per bottle
Beer Rp55,000 per large bottle

Opening Hours:
Everyday from 11am until 3am (4am on weekends)
Happy Hours from 11am to 9pm: 50% off on karaoke rooms and 20% off on F&B

Clique Bar & Kitchen (Gading Serpong - Tangerang)

Clique is a restaurant, bar and nightclub located in Gading Serpong, in the vicinity of Summarecon Mall.

It is open daily for lunch and dinner, serving moderately-priced Italian and International food. I haven't eaten there though as I visited at 2am on a Saturday night. Just before that, I was partying in Enigma which is just 3 minutes away by taxi (you could also walk there if you aren't too lazy).

The clubbing area of Clique is rather small and I don't think it could hold more than 200 people. You have a long bar on one side, the DJ booth in the back, a small dancefloor and a dozen high tables. There are some cool mural paintings of pop icons like John Lennon, Marilyn Monroe and Micheal Jackson.

I don't know if this is because of the alcohol, but I felt people were very friendly and I ended up chatting with several groups. The crowd was young, mostly Indonesian-Chinese in their early 20s, with a fair number of pretty girls. I was the only foreigner except for a guy who told me he was British (but actually looked Indonesian).

I didn't pay any entrance fee but you may be charged a First Drink Charge (FDC) during special events. Recent famous acts include Winky Wiryawan, DJ P. Joana and DJ Riri. They have mostly commercial EDM with several Rn'B and live music nights.

Prices: I only bought a beer: Rp43,000 net. The cocktails cost a bit more than Rp100,000 net.

Overall: If you stay in Tangerang/Serpong, it is a good idea to start a night out in Clique first, then later on head to Jakarta. I'm not sure if the place is busy during the week though.

Opening Hours:
Every day from 10am to 10pm for the restaurant
The club closes at 3am officially on weekends but there was still some music until 3.20

Enigma Nightclub (Gading Serpong - Tangerang)

Enigma is a complex on several floors with a nightclub, a sports bar, a billiard room and a restaurant. It is located in Gading Serpong, an area of South Tangerang (1 hour from Jakarta by car). It is walking distance from Summarecon Mall, Clique Bar & Kitchen, Grand Royal SpaAtria Hotel, Atria Residences, Ara Hotel and Ibis Hotel.

I visited Enigma once on a Saturday night. I didn't try the food and didn't play pool. I reached the place at 1AM, paid a Rp75,000 entrance fee (that included a beer) and went straight to the bar. The main room is quite large, with a low ceiling and a sort of underground feel. The crowd was young, not looking particularly fancy but definitely fun. The people I talked to were students living nearby, obviously from well-off families but with a limited budget. There were also a lot of ladies hanging around and some could have been hookers. At the end of the night, they all seemed to go home with guys they barely met. As far as I can tell, I was the only foreigner.

The DJ that night was playing commercial dance music, including some old songs. I remember hearing "I Like to Move it" and possibly "Baby One More Time" (my memory is blurred). Some clubbers were shaking their head so furiously that I suspect they were on some kind of drugs.

The prices are interesting, comparable to those in Kemang nightclubs. You can get a beer for less than Rp40,000 and a hard drink for under Rp80,000. There are promo on bottles before 12pm (2 Red Label for Rp1,1000,000). If you are a student, bring your ID card as you may get additional discount on food, shisha and pool.

It closed at 4am.

Overall: Enigma is much more laid-back than most nightclubs you'll go to in Jakarta. It is easy to meet people, the drinks are cheap and the atmosphere is fun. Probably the best place for partying in Tangerang/Serpong at the moment.

New Year Eve 2017 - 31st December 2016 in Jakarta

$

Spending your New Year's Eve 2017 in Jakarta is actually not a bad idea, especially if you compare it with the alternative of going to Bali.

Bali during New Year is crazy expensive (expect hotel prices to triple at least), overcrowded even by Jakarta standards, and worst of all: Rainy. I spent 2 NYE there in 2012 and 2014 and they were each disappointing. The only thing that I liked was the fireworks on the beach.

In 2016, I decided to stay in Jakarta for the holiday season, including Christmas. The city was much more livable than usual during the day (much less traffic) and there were great parties almost every night before and after New Year. The city also organizes several fireworks that you can watch from your hotel room, from the street or from a rooftop restaurant.

Where to Watch the Fireworks on New Year Eve?
Fireworks in Ancol on 31st December 2015
The official locations for the NYE fireworks are Ancol, Taman Mini, the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout (Bunderan HI), the Monas (National Monument) and Kota Tua (Taman Fatahillah).

Last year, I watched the one in Bunderan HI which is near Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia. It is the most convenient location for those who plan on going to a nightclub afterwards. You should get there early though as the main roads are blocked starting 7pm.

The atmosphere was messy but it was fun. 99.99% of the people were Indonesians, many of them young and from a working class background. It was frightening at times because fireworks were shot from everywhere, sometimes just a couple meters from us. Avoid it if you are with kids and in any case, make sure you have a good travel insurance.

After the fireworks, our plan was to walk to the nightclub Immigrant (Plaza Indonesia Mall) which was literally 200 meters away. It turned out to be an impossible feat as the normal entrance of the mall was blocked and the crowd was too dense to be penetrated. We ended up stuck in Pullman Hotel for over an hour. My conclusion is that if you choose to watch the fireworks from the streets, you won't be able to go anywhere else until at least 2AM.

To avoid this problem, you can spend your evening in one of the restaurants and bars that have a nice view on the city.

My first choice would be the rooftop lounge Cloud because it is in the same building as Immigrant club. The entrance fee for Cloud last year was Rp250,000 and Rp750,000 for the dinner.

The other venues I would recommend for watching the fireworks are SKYE, Paulaner Brauhaus, Social House, Burgundy or MO Bar.

Where to Eat, Drink and Party in Jakarta for New Year's Eve 2017?
I will update this section later as most venues haven't released their program yet for the 31st December 2016. If you want to get an idea of what to expect in terms of events and prices, you can check my review of last year: 20 Best New Year Eve Parties in Jakarta 2016.

There will be several fun areas with a good atmosphere. Personally, I would recommend checking Basque, Loewy, Potato Head Garage and Jack Sparrows. For a more formal dinner, most 5-star hotel restaurants will have a special offer for a NYE dinner.

Where to Sleep in Jakarta for New Year's Eve?
You have to realize that from 9pm to 2am on New Year, it will be difficult to circulate in the city center. Some major streets like Sudirman/Thamrin may be closed and smaller ones will be clogged by traffic jams. Read carefully my reviews Where to Stay in Jakarta and Jakarta Hotel Guide to make sure you are in the right neighborhood.

The best hotels for New Year's Eve in Jakarta are without any doubts the ones located around Bunderan HI. Hurry up to make your reservation as they will be quickly fully-booked. Most of them have a required minimum stay of 2 nights during the festive season. If you search for them on Agoda or Booking.com, they will not appear if you only select 1 night.

Here are the best deals I could find for luxury hotels that have a view on the Bunderan HI fireworks:

Price for a 3-night stay from 30 December to 2 January: Rp9,400,000 on HotelsCombined.com.

Price for a 3-night stay from 30 December to 2 January: Rp11,600,000 on HotelsCombined.com

Price for a 3-night stay from 30 December to 2 January: Rp13,000,000 on HotelsCombined.com

Price for a 3-night stay from 30 December to 2 January: Rp17,600,000 on HotelsCombined.com

Other Recommended Hotels
If your budget is more limited, there are still plenty of options but you should not wait the last minute to make your booking.

These are centrally-located hotels that will cost you between Rp500,000 and Rp1,500,000 per night (listed from cheapest to most expensive):

You can explore more hotels by searching for the following locations on Agoda: Hotels near Grand Indonesia and Hotels near Sarinah.
