Manon Chocolatier Patissier (Kelapa Gading)

$

Manon Chocolatier Patissier is a Pastry and Chocolate shop located on Jalan Kelapa Nias Raya. I stopped by there looking for nice pastries. As you can see the shop facade is very attractive with large signs and shiny pink colours. This building facade is the best thing about this shop! NB: They also have a small shop located inside Mall Kelapa Gading 3.

To be completely honest, I really think that this Pastry Shop is only about nice in-stores displays, shiny colours and nice packaging. I was really disapointed when I tried the pastries inside.

I had a Hot Chocolate (to go since you cannot seat inside) and it tasted fairly poor. So I was disappointed for a 25,000 Rp beverage. Also I bought a box of chocolate pralines and this was really too sweet and It had sort of bad after-taste. The Macarons, on the opposite, were OK. I liked the wide variety of tastes availables, especially since the Macarons display is located in the main entrance so you cannot miss it.

Overall: I would not recommend this place since you expect a French-style Patisserie but it is actually just a very average cake shop.

The Foundry no8 ( SCBD, adjacent to Empirica Jakarta)

The Foundry no8 is located in the famous "Lot 8" of SCBD. It is an interesting and ambitious commercial  concept. On the ground floor, you will find several small shops, boutiques and restaurants. The whole area is called "A Collective Retail Space". The most interesting part for us is the Level II, where the club is located.

As for Empirica, which is adjacent to The Foundry no8, it is a big warehouse. You would even find steel containers and wood pallets in the club ! You also have couches and tables and a nice bar counter. The place is not nicely decorated and I find it very dark, even more than in a regular club. I went there a couple of times and the place was never fully packed. I think they have some regular customers who like this factory-style trendy place. But unfortunately, the place is not that trendy yet !

Overall: This is not a very busy place at the moment and I am not sure it will be in the next years or so...The good thing about this place is its location: the Lot 8 which is in the heart of SCBD. So basically, if you don't like the place, you can go to Lucy, Fable, Potatoe Head Garage or Empirica !

JJ Royal Bistro (Senayan City Mall)

JJ Royal Bistro is located in Senayan City Mall, not to confuse with JJ Royal Brasserie, located in Lotte Shopping Avenue. JJ Royal Bistro is a Restaurant, Bar and Bakery located in Senayan City Mall. This chain belongs to Foodie Habit Group, the same group that owns JJ Royal Coffee and the sugar Gulaku.

When you first get in JJ Royal Bistro, you are amazed by the decor. It is so colourful and exentric ! They have colourful portraits hanging on the walls (and on the ceiling!) and they have Elizabeth chairs by famous designer Philippe Starck. So a lot of money spent on the decoration of the place, which is very attractive when you don't know the place. Plus anywhere you are in the Restaurant, the colourful Geisha is looking at you...

The food there is elaborated and the presentation is always close to perfection ( Latte art for your Capuccino, plate decoration with spices, sugar, elaborated platters, nice straws...). The prices are in the same range as other fancy places you will find in the mall, count around 35K for a Coffee Latte. The pastries are totally worth it, and the Cronut is also a good option to taste. The food/beverage Menu is so thick ! You can spend a lot of time reading it like a newspaper... There is a balanced mix of Western and Asian food along with French pastries and desserts.

Overall, I would recommand a quick detour to this place, this is a perfect place to show-off in a totally baroque atmosphere. To me it is really like a fancy coffee place.

Huize van Wely (The Papilion building, Kemang)

Huize van Wely is a Dutch Restaurant, Patissier and Chocolatier located in Kemang. This upscale restaurant is located in the Papilion building, the famous glass building on Kemang Raya. This type of architecture is quite uncommon in Jakarta, that is why I wanted to try this restaurant. On the top floor of this building you will find Shy Rooftop & restaurant (you can check my review here).

Outstanding glass building, fancy Dutch restaurant, European-style cuisine...this place is very fancy ! This is not a regular place to hang out with your buddies...It would more suitable to make a proposal or to have a serious conversation.

In this very chic decor, I tried to order some food and I was not disappointed. First they give you a small piece of French bread along with salted butter, which is a very sweet attention. Then I did not wait too long to taste my spicy quesadillas and that was very good. But the best part in my opinion in the dessert and chocolate area.

Huize van Wely has very sophisticated pastries and chocolate. I tried both and it was totally worth it. I keep in mind the wide variety of bouchées "chocolates pralines": nougat, coffee blanc, dark, milk...
They have maybe around 25 different tastes. Again it is very expensive since 1 bouchées is approximately 15 000 Rp (price by weight).

At the time to pay the bill, don't forget to add Tax (10%) and Service (10%), like any other fancy places in the city.

Overall I would recommend it to celebrate a very special occasion or to have a real thrill with the chocolates pralines.

Bacco (Lotte Shopping Avenue, Kuningan)

Bacco is Wine Lounge and also a Restaurant located in Lotte Shopping Avenue Mall in Kuningan. It's the same type of wine venue as Cork & Screw or Vin +. I wanted to try this place for a long time because I didn't find a Wine lounge in Jakarta where the restaurant is worth it. Well Bacco is worth it in my book !

The decoration is full of wood, which makes it a warm atmosphere. The big leather couches at the entrance are also very comfortable and makes it a cozy place. When you get into the restaurant, from the mall, you can see the bottles of wine nicely display which makes it part of the decor. The prices of the bottles of wine, like any other Wine Lounge in Jakarta, are very expensive. Wine is a very luxury product here and you cannot find it for cheap !

I recommend the food here, it is subtle, tasty, and nicely put together. I had a sirloin and it was really good. The Lemon cheescake is also totally worth it.

Bacco is also a nice place for pre-clubbing drink since they are making elaborated (and expensive) cocktails. Other option: you can have a nice glass of Wine on the terrace.

Overall I strongly recommend the food, a mix of Italian food and Gril. Though smaller, this Wine Lounge is better than any other in the city.

Odysseia (Galeries Lafayette @ Pacific Place Mall)

Odysseia is located right across Paul Bakery and Patisserie on the terrace of Pacific Place Mall. I went there on a Saturday night and the place was packed. I had to wait 20 minutes to be seated (without reservation though). This place is owned by All In, the group behind Fable Club.

It is a bar and restaurant but i would more define it as a cozy-chic hang-out place. You definitely want go there to be seen ! Most of the people her have a drink and enjoy the terrace. I would recommend the couches there since they are very comfortable and chill. The whole place is decorated with nature elements such as trees, wood or plants.

I tried the food there and it was average for this kind of venue. I was a little disappointed but the service was nice though.

Overall: I would say that it is a cozy place to have a drink before you go clubbing or to a dancing place. You can also go there to admire the trees in the bar or the nice coupole above the bar counter !

Awan Lounge Rooftop Bar (Kosenda Hotel, Menteng area)

Is Jakarta becoming a hipster place ? Yes, if you refer to Awan Lounge, located in Menteng on KH Wahid Hasyim. I discovered this place thanks to a friend and we went there together to have a casual drink before going clubbing.

Awan Lounge is located on 9th floor of the Kosenda Hotel, a recent boutique hotel located steps away from Ocha & Bella Restaurant. First advice: don't come with your car since the parking is very small ! Apart from that, I found the place very nice. This is definitely the kind of rooftop bar that this area needed.

Kosenda hotel is a boutique hotel with a very unique style: I would define it as hipster but it could also be trendy/relaxing or even Arty-fancy. Awan Lounge is located on the rooftop of the Hotel. The great thing about this place is the view of the Jakarta skyline. You can see Thamrin Residence, Thamrin Executive but also The Plaza and Keraton at The Plaza from this Bar.

They have elaborated cocktails starting at 99 K and also finger food which I did not try yet. This place reminds me Lucy in the Sky, apart the fact that it is smaller. It could definitely be a very trendy place if they put good music and a good DJ (and not Badminton games on TV like when I went there !).

Overall this place is totally worth the detour. Enjoy a drink in a relax atmosphere and with a great view of Jakarta's skyline with a trendy crowd. You can try the couch/bed table at the very entrance if you want a more intimate experience.

Giyanti Coffee Roastery (Menteng)

Giyanti Coffee Roastery is located on Jalan Surabaya, in Menteng. This place is so cozy ! It is not only a regular coffee place it is a real Roastery. What does it mean ? Well, basically when you get in, you will find 2 big coffee roasters. Fresh coffee is sourced in many islands of Indonesia (Toraja, Aceh Gayo, Flores, Java, Padang among others) and is roasted every week in the coffee place. That is why the place is closed on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays.

The place is quite small actually but that what makes it unique and very comfortable. The owner of the place is always here and he will advice you on what kind of coffee you should have, depending on your tastes and on your mood ! I tried the Gluten-free pastries and that was good, even though I cannot really tell if it was actually gluten-free or not... Price are standard here even though it will be slightly cheaper than a coffee in a Starbucks in a mall.

Other particularity of this place: there is a table soccer (or "Baby-foot" for French speaking people). I have to admit I have been looking for a table soccer for a long time...

Overall I recommend the place for a very cozy afternoon to chill out on the couches, enjoying great Indonesian Fresh-roasted coffee. Too bad the place is not open every day.

Hard Rock Café (Pacific Place Mall)

Hard Rock Café used to be in Ex, near Plaza Indonesia but they moved to Pacific Place Mall in December 2013. Very nice Rock decor, truly American. I am not a huge fan of this worldwide franchiseI hace to admit but in Jakarta it has a particular taste. The music and the cocktails are good, the food is very pricey: 180K for a CheeseBurger. I tasted it and it was very average and there was no pickles...

I went there a couple of times and it was very busy, especially during lunch time. With Paul Bakery and Patisserie, Odysseia and now Hard Rock Café, Pacific Place Mall have some nice outdoors Restaurants and Bars.

Besides from that, the place is much better than the one in Ex. The stage is pretty big and the bar is massive. I liked the tattooed waiters that gave a Rock n Roll touch to the place.

Fun fact: You can enter Hard Rock Café from inside the mall and the entrance is located...in the Toilets of the Mall! I have never seen that, and I am sure it is pretty unique...

Overall: Go there to enjoy nice live band shows every night with a fresh draft beer.

Air Asia: Why it is the Worst Low-Cost Airline?

$
0
0

I am surprised that Air Asia can still get the title of "World's Best Low Cost Airlines" in 2013 considering it is by far the worst company and the one company I always try to avoid when flying in Asia.

It seems like AirAsia is so good with its marketing and advertising that people are brainwashed into thinking that they are receiving a 5-star service when flying with them. I hear people excited about taking AirAsia, when the truth is that they will pay more for sitting in a super tiny seat without any food or service and probably departing late.

AirAsia is more expensive than any other low cost airlines in Asia while it does not give back any thing to its customers. Obviously, they do cut on their services and operating costs but the money saved with this rationalizing is not used to decrease flight ticket prices, it is just more profit for the company. I applaud with both hands at how smart it is.

I would accept the level zero of service provided by AirAsia if they were more cheap than anybody else. This would be my reward for accepting such a shame service. But it is the contrary that happens.

My problems start with their website. It is the trickiest and most dishonest booking website that I have ever come across with.

If you use flight comparators such as skyscanner, you may have had this problem of clicking on an AirAsia flight because it seemed to be the cheaper options, and in the end realizing that when you add the taxes, the fuel surcharge, the luggages, the seats, the meal, the check in fee,  the payment fee, the priority seats, and the priority boarding, it ends up being more expensive than Singapore Airlines.

Avoiding to pay additional charges will require your full attention: For instance, if you don't want to have AirAsia Insurance, you have to refuse once, and then cancel your refusal. Tricky? Canceling your seats is so complicated as well that I booked them inadvertently at least 3 times... Same with the priority boarding that I forgot to un-tick...

Charging for additional fees is the specialty of AirAsia and its most lucrative business. They will find any possible way to make you pay additional fees. You want to add additional luggage weight to your booking at check in time? This will be charged beyond reasonable. You want a bottle of water on the plane? Take out your wallet. All other companies will give you something free even though they are cheaper: Lion Air for instance do not charge if you request a special seat and they allow 15 kilos of luggage for free. Sriwijaya will give you a free snack (very limited but still), Citilink lets you choose your seat for free, etc...  Within the price range of AirAsia, you can actually often fly with regular companies where the service is beyond any comparisons.

With AirAsia, no only do you get nothing free, you also get less for what you pay for (unless you pay more).

When you arrive at the airport, you will notice that AirAsia is the only company that forces you to check in with a machine instead of a human. If you do not check in online, you will have to pay an additional fee. The company would probably reply that it helps keeping its costs low and its prices lower, but the prices aren't lower. They are higher. It is an additional constraint on passengers that is increasing AirAsia's margin while not benefiting to the customers. Maybe one day Executives at AirAsia will find a way to make passengers clean the plane by themselves...

Let's talk about space now: I am a rather tall guy so I'm sensitive to the space between seats in an airplane. All low-cost companies are usually uncomfortable, but AirAsia beats all records. If you are more than 180cm and you didn't buy priority seats with extra leg space, your flight with AirAsia is a torture. You have to fold or squeeze your leg so that you will miraculously fit in the tiny space. If you are more than 190cm, I do not believe you can fly in those seats. If you are more than 190cm and you ever managed to fit in an AirAsia seat, please give me your testimony below.

AirAsia usually flies from and to second class airports, not the main ones. This is true in Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok. Those airports are low-cost with less comfort, less shops and restaurants, and more queuing and disorganization. If you have to connect to another flight, unless it is another AirAsia flight, you will lose precious time running from one part of a city to the other.

Air Asia is very very often late and it is not just a personal impression. Just have a look at flightstats.com. You will see that some routes like Denpasar-Jakarta are on time on average 29% of the time only... Try to get any kind of compensation or excuse from a delayed flight and you will understand what is the meaning of low-cost services...

At last, the flight attendant of AirAsia are obviously recruited on their generous looks and it makes for a pleasant flight if you are a male like me. In terms of skills and attitude, they are probably on average more snobbish and arrogant than with other low cost airlines. Comparing them with flights attendants from regular companies like Singapore Airlines is a blasphemy. In terms of skills, I am not so sure but you should probably wish that nothing goes wrong during the flight...

My conclusion:

Personally I always avoid AirAsia because I consider that they are priced as regular airlines while offering the lowest standard of low cost service.

Be smart when you book a flight and check what is the real final price you pay and what kind of service are offered.

I would say book with AirAsia only if you can get a real promo and if you are flying without luggage, and without any need for extra services. You may also be sensitive to the safety issue as the record of the company doesn't show any deadly accident (but you may want to read this article though: Accident with AirAsia).

After Beer Garden Kemang and Beer Garden SCBD, Beer Garden Menteng is now open, right in front of the Oria Hotel, not too far from Ocha & Bella . Same concept, same furniture, even the same Rooftop Bar like in SCBD. Those places really look alike.

The place opened in October 2013 but has already a good basis of customers who already went to the other Beer Gardens. Since the place is all open, you would definitely get hot and sweaty, thus drink more beer to refresh yourself ! You get the concept ?

Live bands, affordable prices and good choice of imported beers.

Djournal Coffee Bar is a Coffee place located in Grand Indonesia Mall. This Coffee place belong to the Ismaya Group, owner also of Social House, SKYE Bar & Restaurant (Menara BCA) and DragonFly Club (Graha BIP). You will easily find Djournal Coffee since it is located close to the main West Mall Entrance of Grand Indonesia. But you will definitely get lost in Grand Indonesia Mall since it is quite big !

This place is a good alternative to Starbucks but with a more trendy side. The prices will be the same as in Starbucks though. Good service and pretty crowded coffee place. I would recommend it for the terrace, facing Plaza Indonesia Mall entrance.

There are 2 other Djournal Coffee at CILANDAK TOWN SQUARE Main Lobby and SUMARECON MAL SERPONG GF.

Mamma Rosy (Kemang)

Well, Italian Restaurants competition is getting tougher and tougher... I remember some years ago when the only decent Italian restaurant in Jakarta was Toscana in Kemang. Now you have a lot more Italian restaurants in Jakarta, you also have Pizza chains like Pizza Express or PEPeNERO and now you also have genuine family italian restaurant, with the Mamma (the mother) and the father working along with the next generation.

In my opinion, Mamma Rosy has 2 main particularities that other Italian restaurants don't have. First it is located in a huge house converted in restaurant. That means you can go in different rooms of the house and you can even rent a private room. There is also a patio which is absolutely gorgeous with a nice decoration. The second thing is that it is a family-owned business. You actually see the whole family working together and serving your dishes.

Unfortunately, the only problem with this restaurant is the food ! Honestly I did not like Mamma Rosy when I went there. I went there with 8 other friends, we had a big table and the service was very poor. The food arrived at different times, that means that some people just started eating when other had already finished. The waiters were not very comprehensive and not really friendly. I tried the pizza and the dough was not salted ! A beginner Pizzaiolo would make this mistake, not a 1948-established restaurant... The food is also pricey since most of the pizzas are above 100K !

Saint Louis Lounge is located In Plaza Indonesia, one of the most fancy malls in Jakarta, along with Pacific Place Mall. The place is white, very white, shiny white ! White reminds you of purity and luxury.

This restaurant is owned by Hermès, the famous French Luxury brand. So it has to have a certain standard. I tried the food there and it was really good. This is not a very pricey place but the prices of some items are definitely on the upward trend. The food is mainly French-style and Asian Fusion.

This is a place to be seen, so get dress to impress while going there...
