Bandung Nightlife: Bars and Nightclubs (Updated 2021)

Bandung nightlife is constantly changing and it can be hard to keep up with it. This is the fourth time I update this article and I'm pretty sure that within a couple of years, most nightclubs on this list will have disappeared.

For this reason, I recommend you to check the hastag "Bandungclubbers" on Instagram as it is usually where you can get updates on the latest parties.

Because Bandung is a vibrant student city, its nightlife caters mainly to young people in their late teens and early 20s. There are dozens of affordable cafés, restaurants, bars and clubs that are specifically targeting them, especially in areas like Jalan Setiabudi or within trendy malls such as Cihampelas Walk, Paris Van Java, and Trans Studio Mall. Note that for a majority of these students, the nightlife is alcohol-free and consists mainly of hanging out with friends at a coffee shops.

There is also another nightlife scene, focused on domestic tourists who flock from Jakarta on the weekends. They usually head for the hills surrounding Bandung (like Dago) where the cool air and the nice views offer a pleasant break from their life in the Big Durian. There, you will find mostly lounges and restaurants, some of them offering live music.

Hotels Near Bandung Nightlife
Bandung is a sprawling city that I still haven't figured out completely despite visiting it at least 10 times. I usually come by train and therefore I like to stay near the station in Jalan Braga. It is a rather central street which is near some of the famous tourists sights. You also have a mall and a few bars/clubs within walking distance. Currently, F3X, Triangle Beer House and Hangover are near.

Two hotels I recommend are the Crowne Plaza Bandung (70$/night) or Favehotel Braga (25$/night).

Best Bars and Clubs in Bandung
Below are some of the current happening party spots in Bandung. I linked to the Instagram of the venue so you can check if it is still open or not. If you know of a new place, please don't hesitate to leave a comment at the end of this article.

Recently reopened, the new Southbank is a lounge that turns into a club after midnight. It is more upmarket compared to the competition.

Located on Jalan Braga, this is a more mature club and probably the best one if you are a foreigner. Good sound system and DJs, usually playing house, Trance, and EDM tracks. They have famous guest DJs once in a while, even international ones like Dash Berlin or Cosmic Gate. Bobby Suryadi from Stadium also has a semi-residency there. KTV rooms are available.

Cheap and popular bar/nightclub with a relaxed, hipster crowd. Near ITB Bandung.

Located on Jalan Braga, this is a small bar with DJs and reasonable prices: 50k for a large Bintang and 35k for a small one. Typical student hangout place. Music is better than average for Bandung.

This venue has a DJ/live music and specializes in soju drinks. Minimalist décor but the customers are a bit more sophisticated than elsewhere.

It is the sixth club opened by the famous Holywings chain. They opened during the COVID pandemic and since then, it has been rather quiet. It will probably get busier as soon as the restrictions are lifted.

Surabaya Nightlife: Best Nightclubs, Bars and Spas (Updated 2021)

I have always enjoyed Surabaya nightlife even though the options for nightclubs and bars are limited and somewhat provincial.

3 million people live there, making it the second largest city in Indonesia. Compared to Jakarta, it still feels laid-back and unsophisticated. The streets are rather clean, you can walk on the sidewalks and the traffic is not horrible. There are several modern malls, but none of them as chic as Plaza Indonesia or even Grand Indonesia.

Few expats live in Surabaya and even fewer tourists visit it. As a result, you may get more attention than usual from locals. I remember being at McDonald's and people were pointing at me as if I was some sort of curiosity.

Since COVID happened, a lot of places have closed down in the city and the opening times may be shorter now. It can be a good idea to make a phone call to the venue you want to visit beforehand.

If you are completely new to Surabaya, the best way to start your night out is to go to a mall like Surabaya Town Square and drink a beer at one of the cafés. You can also try to meet with locals on the dating apps that are the most popular in Indonesia. Finally, below is a list of the best bars and nightclubs in Surabaya. If you think I should add/remove a venue, please let me know in the comments below!

Best Nightclubs in Surabaya
Most nightclubs in Surabaya are targeting a local crowd. The most popular are male-oriented, with lady companions or GROs available. People usually stay around a table and order bottles of alcohol. If people dance, it is between friends and not on the dancefloor.

Top 10 Coyote Bar and Karaoke
Part of the Top 10 Group, this small club is one of the most happening in Surabaya. Easy to access in Plaza Tunjungan, it features DJs and sexy dancers all night long (including girls from Thailand). Most of the crowd is Indochinese, Singaporean and Malaysian.

It is the most expensive venue in Surabaya with a first drink charge of Rp200,000 on most nights.

Read a full review here: Coyote (Ten Club and Karaoke)

Foreplay
Located just above Eclectic Bar in Surabaya Town Square (Sutos), Foreplay is a popular nightclub with a young student crowd. Contrary to other venues in the city, there are no prostitutes or escorts.

It has events every night of the week and it is recommended on Mondays (Campus Night), Wednesdays (Ladies Night) and on weekends.

Read a full review here: Foreplay Surabaya

Club 360
Owned by the same group behind Coyote, Club 360 is a large, round-shaped nightclub located in Royal Plaza Mall. It is part of a complex featuring a spa and a karaoke. Club 360 is not so busy during the week unless there is a special event.

More information: Club 360 Surabaya

Kowloon
Maybe the largest nightclub in Surabaya, this is a very local place with deafening music and probably some drugs on sale. It has an upmarket karaoke with lady companions.

More information: Kowloon

Best Bars and Live Music Venues in Surabaya
Colors Pub
This bar features live bands, DJs or special shows every night. It is not as crowded as it used to be. Decent pub food available.

Read my article about it: Colors Surabaya

Eclectic Bar
Eclectic Bar is almost always busy, probably because of its location in the entrance of the popular Surabaya Town Square mall. If you need to have a drink during the week, this would be my first recommendation as you can be sure you won't be alone. Near Eclectic are several other bars and cafés.

More information: Eclectic Bar

Desperados
Desperados is the sports bar of the Shangri-La. This is where you'll find the highest concentration of expats and foreigners in the city, mostly guys above 40. Some girls go there to find a boyfriend (and others to find money). Live music every evening.

Full review: Desperados Shangri La

Sobriety
This is a new bar/lounge that seems to be hype at the moment. I haven't visited it but it can be interesting to check their Instagram page and see if they have interesting events. It is located within a few minutes from Colours pub.

Hotels Near Surabaya Nightlife
Surabaya is a huge city without an obvious city center. The most interest nightlife venues are near Tunjungan Plaza (Jalan Basuki Rahmat), near Jalan Sumatra, or near Surabaya Town Square (Jalan MayJen Sungkono).

My hotel recommendations to enjoy Surabaya nightlife are the following:

Luxury and 5-star hotels:
Shangri La has an expat bar called Desperados which gets lively in the evening with live music. It also has a central location and its prices are reasonable.

The Sheraton is located within the new Tunjungan Plaza Mall extension, walking distance from the famous Coyote Top 10 Club.

Hotel Ciputra World is also within a luxury mall and it is brand new. The location is not as central but you have a few bars and clubs around.

4-star hotels
TS Suites is located within the Surabaya Town Square. It is the best 4-star hotel in the city.

This is another hotel within the mall Tunjungan Plaza. Even though it is a 4-star property, it is so popular that its prices are similar to the Sheraton. It is actually much newer and its design more modern.

Mid-range
Midtown Hotel and Swiss Belinn Tunjungan are both walking distance from Tunjungan Plaza. They offer the best compromise between comfort and price.

Budget
If your budget is under 25$ per night, you can try Favehotel MexCitihub Sudirman and Citihub Tunjungan.

Malang Nightlife: Best Bars, Clubs and Spas (Updated 2021)

Malang is one of the nicest cities I've been to in Java. It is a mid-sized mountain town just 2 hours from Surabaya, relatively clean (for Indonesia standards) and with a pleasant weather (though it can be rainy).

As you would expect, Malang nightlife is not the most happening. The current hotspot is actually the brand-new Starbucks, in front of which you may surprisingly see a couple of Ferraris. If you want to party, you have a few good bars and nightclubs though, enough to keep you busy for a weekend.

Most bars are laid-back beer houses or live music cafés that are popular with students. These venues are not so sophisticated and their prices are as low as they can get. There are some reputed universities in the city (Universitas Negeri Malang in particular), so the crowd is rather educated and you can easily make friends if you are not shy to socialize.

Clubs are more diversified. The best ones are modern, with a rich crowd, sexy girls and decent entertainment (DJs, bands, dancers). On the other end of the spectrum, you also have a more underground nightlife of seedy karaokes and "executive clubs".
I learned that alcohol is supposed to be prohibited in Malang, yet I didn't have any difficulties to buy any, including hard liquor.

Note: I updated this article in April 2021, removing some venues and adding others. Because of the COVID pandemic, some venues are temporarily closed. If you plan on going to one of them, just make sure to check their Instagram page to see if they have reopened or not.

Best Nightclubs, Bars and Cafés in Malang

Rust Bar
A chill pub with live acoustic music, perfect to drink your first beer of the night. It is usually busy with a mixed crowd of students and young professionals who come in groups.

Hugo's Club MalangHugo's is a small and student-oriented club. Located in the basement of the shopping center Cyber Mall (ex-Plaza Dieng, next to City Point), it is a modern venue with good music and friendly staff. The dance floor is tiny, which does not really matter as most clubbers stay around tables.

It is not crowded every night, so try to visit it on weekends or on their campus nights (Monday). Ladies' night on Wednesday is fun too.

Music is the usual EDM, Hip-Hop, House, Top 40. For more information about their events, you can check their twitter and Instagram accounts below. Open until 3am except for Sunday.

Levels Brewhouse
Levels Brewhouse was the first beer beer bar to open in Malang and it is still one of the busiest today. It is cozy, with air con and comfortable sofas, pretty much like a Starbucks actually. They have a selection of foreign beers, including Hoegaarden, Erdinger and Leffe. Live bands and DJs a few nights per week. Sports on TV.

Public Malang
This is another student pub, in a rather minimalist design. Two floors, one is loud with live music and the other one more quiet, like a lounge. Prices are decent (30k for a small Bintang). They have the usual ladies' nights and campus nights.

Backroom by Triangle
Similar to Public (in more trendy), it is also crowded mostly with youngsters in their late teens and early twenties. Live music every night.

My Place Pub (Closed since 2020)
Located in Hotel Kartika Graha, My Place is the most popular nightclub in Malang at the time of writing. It is usually crowded even during the week and it is also one of the few venues in Malang with expats.

The club has a 200-pax capacity, on two levels. The upstairs mezzanine is a VIP area with private sofas. There is also a luxury karaoke of 11 rooms. Prices for the karaoke start at IDR2.6M net for 3 hours in the room and a bottle of Jack Daniel's.

The entrance to the club is Rp80,000 with one free beer. Live music every night (Top 40 songs), then a DJ performance (Rn'B, House, EDM). They also have fashion shows and sexy dancers occasionally. Ladies night is on Wednesdays (Free tequila and free entry for girls). Tuesday is beer night (Buy 1 Get 1 Draught Beer).

Best Hotels Near Malang Nightlife
I was staying in the Hotel Tugu near the train station and I believe it was a great choice. It is very central so you can walk to almost any attractions in the city. The hotel restaurant is one of the best in the city and if you want to try local dishes, you have several street food stalls 5 minutes away.

It is more expensive than average but still reasonable for Western standards. Prices are higher on weekends.

Whiz Prime Basuki Rahmat
This is a budget hotel with a central location, clean facilities and an affordable price. Best of its kind in the city if all you are looking for is a comfortable place to stay with all the basic amenities.

Hotel Aria Gajayana
This hotel is not as centrally located as the two above, but it is still very convenient. Within the same building, you have a spa, a mall, a bar, a karaoke and several restaurants. The value for money is excellent as you'll pay less than 50$ for 4-star facilities.

Are VPNs legal in Indonesia?

Within the past two weeks, both China and Russia have made VPNs illegal. This has made people worry that other countries might soon forbid them as well.

In particular, we can wonder if Indonesia, where thousands of websites are blocked (because of porn, streaming, gambling, hate speech, terrorism, etc), will follow the lead.

First, let me remind you quickly what VPNs are and why so many people are using them in Indonesia.

VPN, an acronym for Virtual Private Network, is a technology that allows you to bypass internet censorship and to remain anonymous on the web. Basically, it connects your computer to a protected server in another country, from where you will be free to visit any sites you want. The best VPN companies do not keep track of your activity in their servers, meaning nobody will ever know what you did online.

In a country like Indonesia, there are dozens of reasons you may want to use a VPN (personally I never turn it off):
- If you want to visit blocked websites, you'll need a VPN
- If you want to be anonymous at work, in your residence, at home, you'll need a VPN
- If you want to illegally download movies or software from torrents/P2P sites, you'll need a VPN
- If you want to watch TV shows that are not available in Indonesia, you'll need a VPN
- If you want to watch Netflix USA in Indonesia, you'll need a VPN

The list could go on and on.

The cost of a VPN for a year is quite reasonable, usually not more than 60$. I've used about half a dozen of them in the past 5 years and the ones I recommend are PureVPN (my current one - cheap but still great) or IPVanish (a bit pricey but ultra-fast with plenty of servers).

For a detailed review, you can also read my article: How to Access Blocked Websites in Indonesia with a VPN?

Now back to our question: Are VPNs legal or not in Indonesia?

Fortunately, YES they are legal.

In fact, according to a 2016 survey, Indonesia is the country with the most VPN users in the world (41% of web users on computers). Almost everyone I know uses one, including those with limited technical skills. All you have to do is download an application, install it, and launch it with your login/password.

I think it is unlikely that the situation will change in the forthcoming years. Many reasons for that:

First, the censorship in Indonesia and in China is fundamentally different.  One is a democracy, the other is not. Indonesia forbids websites that are morally offensive to individuals (conservative Muslims) while China forbids websites that pose a political threat to the whole system. Consequently, there is a much bigger incentive for the latter to crackdown on VPNs.

Furthermore, for strategic reasons, China has built its own ecosystem of websites and apps (WeChat, Baidu, Sina Weibo, Youku, etc.) which are copycats of prohibited American services (respectively Whatsapp, Google, Twitter and YouTube). That's another reason for China to block VPN that Indonesia does not have.

Finally, even if the Indonesian government wanted to make VPNs illegal, I'm pretty sure it would only be wishful thinking. Whenever laws are passed, they are rarely enforced properly because the people in charge are either corrupt or incompetent (or both!). For instance, regarding currently blocked websites, you can bypass the ban quite easily, even without a VPN, simply by changing the DNS settings on your computer.

Conclusion
VPNs are 100% legal in Indonesia so you should not worry about using one. With just 40$ per year, you can improve your internet experience significantly, without having to worry about websites being blocked or about the government spying on your activity.

How to Unblock Blocked Websites in Indonesia (Updated 2021)

Internet in Indonesia is heavily censored.

This means that thousands of websites are unavailable when you are staying in the country. To be precise, as of today, there are over 1 million blocked URLs in Indonesia, including some very famous ones such as Reddit, Tumblr, as well as all Torrent, Gambling, or Porn websites.

They are blocked by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) operating in Indonesia, following orders from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technologies (Kementrian Komunikasi dan Informatika). The ban is part of the "Safe Internet" initiative whose idea is to protect Indonesian users from visiting websites that do not follow the "moral, ethics and spirit" of the nation.

Luckily, you don't have to worry about accessing your favorite site while visiting or living in Indonesia because the ban is very easy to circumvent.

In the following article, I will show you how to unblock any website in Indonesia in less than 5 minutes.

How to Unblock Any Website in Indonesia?

Using a VPN
If you want to be able to surf on any website in Indonesia, my recommendation is to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network). It is a small and discreet software that you install on your phone and your computer, and that you can just turn on anytime you visit sensitive websites (or you can always leave it on).

All you need to do is to choose one, create an account, then download the software. Below, I will give you some recommendation for VPNs if you don't know which one to choose.

The main benefit of a VPN (compared with a Proxy, an alternative to unblocking sites) is that you are guaranteed total anonymity. Your internet provider, the government, your boss, your landlord, or anybody who can have access to your connection information will have no way of knowing which websites you've visited. If you've gambled, if you've watched porn, or if you've downloaded pirated movies, your secret is safe.

Free VPNs exist but they always have limited bandwidth. It means that if you want to watch a movie, it will load very slowly, even if you have a high-speed connection. Considering VPNs are very useful for people who like streaming movies, it can be an annoying issue that, to be honest, is not worth the money saved.

Instead, I recommend choosing a paying VPN knowing you can get a great one for just 2-3 dollars per month. It is definitely a great investment considering everything the VPN will help you with (protecting your privacy, changing your Netflix location, etc).

I've used several VPN brands in the past 2 years. Most offer a free trial for 1 month so I like to change once in a while.

The one I currently use is PureVPN. I started using them after they gave away a 7-day trial for 99 cents and I was happy enough to subscribe with them for a 2 year plan. What I liked was that the VPN takes only a second to connect, and that so far, Netflix can't detect it (this means I can watch lots of films and series that are not available in Indonesia). I also use it to watch some French channels, for instance if there is a football game. In terms of speed, my observation is that you should connect to a server which is as near as possible from where you live. When I'm in Indonesia, I therefore tend to choose one in Singapore or Australia instead of the US or the UK.

I never turn the VPN off, it's always in the background of my phone or laptop and I don't even notice it anymore.

Another VPN that was working well for me was VyprVPN. I used it for 1 year before and it served me well when I was in China. The government there has made VPN illegal but VyprVPN managed to bypass the censorship. The reason I changed to PureVPN was that it was a bit more expensive at US9,95/month or US3.75/month if you choose a 12-month plan. Note that they offer you a 30-day free trial.

I tried other VPNs as well but it was more than 2 years ago so I prefer not mentioning them here. If you have one to recommend, please leave a comment below.

Blocked Websites in Indonesia

Websites with Pornography:
866,633 "porn" sites are blocked by the Indonesian government as of today. That's a huge number and it also includes sites with only mild nudity, erotic literature, and sex-ed. The most famous ones such as XVideos, YouPorn, Porn Hub, or XHamster are all forbidden.

Manga Websites
The reason for blocking these is probably because some mangas contain some sexy drawings. It might be deemed improper for younger Indonesians and teenagers. probably to protect younger people and teenagers). Some examples:
- Mangafox (Actually not a porn site but some albums might be considered erotic)
- KissManga (Most mangas are normal but it has an adult section)

Torrent, Sharing, P2P,  Download Sites
Indonesia blocks these websites, not only because they offer pirated movies, but more specifically because they have porn.

Video Streaming Site:
This is more on a case by case basis. Vimeo for instance was banner for several years but it seems to be permitted again.

LGBT-friendly content or apps
No surprise here as the Indonesian government has proven to be quite hostile towards the gay, lesbian, bi and trans community. If you want to use Grindr for instance, you'll need a VPN.

Drug-related and "Digital drugs" Websites
Some websites promoting the use of drugs, as well as those selling some items like waterpipes or "i-dosers" are blocked in Indonesia.

Radicalism, Hate Speech and Fake News Websites (Hoax)
There are almost 300 websites blocked in this category. Many are websites promoting Wahhabism, the Islamic state or conspiracy theories. There was a controversy as many of those sites were censored a few months before the 2017 Gubernatorial election. Some suspected that anti-Ahok sites were the main target.

Fraudulent Investment and E-Commerce Websites
976 websites are blocked for fraud. Mostly, they feature fake products, investment scams, pyramid schemes, Ponzi schemes, etc.

The closure is sometimes followed by a police investigation and arrests. This was the case with the Dream for Freedom website (D4F, taken down since) and the fake Djakarta Warehouse Project website that I mentioned on my DWP review (also shut down since).

Gambling, Lottery and Betting Sites
After porn, these represent the largest number of banned sites (4,120). Casinos are strictly illegal in Indonesia, yet many of its citizens love gambling. It isn't surprising that to avoid being fined, they've quickly switched to the online world.

Why Porn Sites Are Blocked in Indonesia (And How to Unblock Them)

As of today, there are over 1 million porn websites blocked in Indonesia, but also thousands of betting sites, streaming sites and extremist websites.

10 years ago, there was no censorship in the country. It all started under President SBY in 2008, when the parliament passed the now-famous Anti-Porn bill. This law stipulates that possessing or downloading porn can be punishable by up to 4 years in jail. Worse, being involved in a "sexually suggestive performance" is worth up to 12 years in prison. Now you understand why there aren't any active Indonesian pornstars.

At first, only the most famous porn sites were blocked, but the rest was easily accessible. Then slowly, more and more sites were filtered, until it became impossible to see anything without the use of a VPN. Even typing naughty words on Google will be censored.

So what should you do if you really want to access a blocked site?

The solution is simple, cheap, and it will be useful to you in so many situations other than for watching porn (for instance to use Netflix): You must use a VPN.

I had already written about the best VPNs in Indonesia a few months ago. I will be a bit more specific here and explain to you how it works exactly.

For that, I will show you the example of VPN I'm currently using, VyprVPN. I recommend this one for Indonesia, but feel free to purchase another one if you feel there is a better choice. Anyway, the interface always looks similar to one another.

To make sure everyone can understand this post, I will keep my explanations as simple as possible, especially on the technicalities. Please leave a comment below if you think I left out something important or if you require additional information.

What is a VPN and why you need one?
A VPN client is a small software that you can install on your computer or your phone in order to access a VPN (or Virtual Private Network). When you connect to a VPN, you can surf the web anonymously, from another location than Indonesia and with all your data protected.

In the case of VyprVPN, the software looks like this:
When you click on the connect button, you will access the internet through a server (here in Singapore). From this moment on, the websites you visit will not know that you are in Indonesia and instead they'll assume you are in Singapore. Since the connection is encrypted and anonymous, there is also no way for third parties to know who you are and what you are doing online.

The benefits of using a VPN in Indonesia are particularly important for 3 main reasons:

- Access websites blocked by the Indonesian government
Almost all porn websites are blocked in Indonesia, including the most famous ones like PornHub, XHamster, YouPorn, or XVideos. As soon as a new one is popular, it will get banned almost immediately. Sex-oriented forums like internationalsexguide.info, adult dating sites like AdultFriendFinder, or cam websites like Chaturbate are also forbidden here.

- Bypass regional restrictions affecting Indonesia
Some internet content may not be available from Indonesia, not because of the government, but because of the content providers themselves. For instance, I cannot watch TV replays from a French TV channel because it only allows viewing from Europe. This is a common problem with many streaming services (Netflix, BeIN Connect, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc).

The leading betting website betfair.com also does not allow bets coming from Indonesia.

When using a VPN, it is very easy to bypass those restrictions as you can simply connect from a server in the country of your choice. This can be done with just one click:
- Protect your identity from the Electronic Information and Transaction Law of 2008
When you surf the web in Indonesia either from a laptop or a mobile phone, you are not anonymous. Your internet provider knows who you are and which websites you visit (even if you are in incognito mode). Worse, he may communicate that information to your employer or to the government. Western countries spy on the internet and there is no reason to think that Indonesia does not. If you are often exchanging sensitive information or if you like visiting unorthodox websites, using a VPN is a necessary protection for your privacy.

Furthermore, after Indonesia voted the law on Electronic Information and Transaction in 2008, it has become easier to accuse anyone of defamation, insult or blasphemy. If you enjoy political discussions about Indonesia on forums or in the comment section of news sites, I really advise remaining as anonymous as possible.

If you are regularly traveling to Asia, the VPN will also help you in almost every country as each has its own restrictions: China blocks pretty much everything (Google, Facebook, Youtube - and even Jakarta100bars.com), Malaysia blocks porn and opposition websites, Thailand blocks any websites criticizing the monarchy, etc. In almost all Asian countries, at least a few people have been arrested for writing "inappropriate" comments on Facebook.

VyprVPN Features

Servers
It is important to choose a VPN with an important number of servers, especially if you travel a lot. For Indonesia, the fastest servers will typically be the ones in countries like Singapore, Taiwan, Australia, Macau or Hong Kong.

The great thing about VyprVPN is that they even have a server in Indonesia. This is really useful if you want to be geolocated in Indonesia while having total privacy.

Privacy
VyprVPN is one of the most serious options when it comes to the protection of its users' privacy. The main reason for that is that they do not keep logs from your connection, meaning that even they do not know which websites you visited. Also, they have a Modulating IP feature that modifies your IP address continuously while you are surfing. This makes it impossible for anyone to track your whereabouts.

Accessing Blocked Website in Indonesia with VyprVPN
My most important concern when using a VPN is: Can I surf any websites, even those that are blocked? Can I use any streaming websites (like Netflix)? Can I download movies and torrents fast?

I can answer YES to all of these questions. I managed (for research purpose of course) to access all porn websites I could find, and all the blocked websites mentioned above. I also could watch Netflix USA. I could connect to the torrent website kat.how and I download some movies (only legal ones naturally). Using VyprVPN did not affect my speed (I was even watching YouTube at the same time). Finally, I visited the website of the French TV channels I mentioned earlier and I could watch all their videos without any restrictions on content.

Is it legal to use a VPN
YES. There are no laws forbidding the use of VPN in Indonesia, even to access illegal websites (like porn). You will not get into any troubles for using one.

Installing and Using VyprVPN
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to install and use VyprVPN (it is so easy that all you need to make it work is a somewhat functioning brain).

Step 1: Register (7 Days Free Trial)
After you choose a VyprVPN plan*, you will be invited to create an account on VyprVPN's control panel. This is where you can update your information and set up your VPN (if you have special needs, otherwise just ignore it). This is also where you can contact the support team and read dozens of tutorials and guides.

* Note: I recommend choosing the Premium Plan as it has the Chameleon Protocol which is very useful for Netflix users. It is also the best way to access free internet in China. There is a 30-day money-back guarantee so you don't risk anything anyway.

Step 2: Install
After you've subscribed, you will need to download the VPN client software from your account. You just need to click on "Download VyprVPN" under the Dashboard tab:

Step 3: Connect
Once the client software is installed and launched, all you will need to do is click on CONNECT and enter your login/password.

Step 4: Surf the web freely and anonymously
Once connected, you can now surf any blocked websites and nobody will know what you are visiting (including your boss, your internet provider, etc).

You may switch server location as often as you'd like to and you can also monitor in real-time your traffic speed.

Pricing
VyprVPN has similar pricing compared to other VPNs like PureVPN or IPVanish (actually, it is even cheaper if you buy a 12-month plan).

There are 2 kinds of plans depending on the number of devices allowed. Here is a summary:

VyprVPN Basic (3 simultaneous devices): 9.95$ per month or 5$/month with an annual plan
VyprVPN Premium (5 simultaneous devices + Chameleon technology which is needed for China): 12.95$ per month or 6.67$/month with an annual plan

For most people, 3 devices are normally enough (laptop and phone). This means that with just 60$ per year, you can have access to any blocked websites in Indonesia. You'll also enjoy stress-free web browsing, knowing that no one can find out about your online activities.

In case you want to cancel your subscription, you can do it for free after 30 days. If you take a monthly plan, you can cancel any time also.

You can make your life in Jakarta much easier by downloading a few apps on your phone. They will be helpful in numerous everyday situations, from getting around the city to buying your groceries. There's even an app to order a massage!

I've selected here my 15 favorites, most of them free. Please leave me a comment if you think I forgot one worth mentioning!

Here are the most useful apps for living in Jakarta:

Owned by Google, Waze is a GPS navigator with real-time traffic information. For instance, it tells you if there are traffic jams, accidents, road repairs and even police stops on your way.

It is an essential tool to estimate the length of your road trips within Jakarta. It can also give you excellent advice on the best routes from a point A to a point B.

Alternative:
Lewat Mana has webcams pointed at the main thoroughfares in Jakarta.

Price: FREE

Maps Me
Maps Me is similar to Google Maps with one additional benefit: You can download the maps you need and then consult them offline. It is particularly useful whenever you are in an area of Jakarta with slow internet (or if you don't want to use your internet quota).

I also enjoy the possibility of marking a location on a map with a pinpoint. I put on in every cities I've been and now I have this:

If you are a single person in Jakarta, Bumble the best app available to find a partner compared to its competitors.

Alternative:
There are a few options other than Bumble that I listed in the guide Best Dating Apps in Indonesia: Badoo, Skout, Tinder, OkCupid, Paktor, Grindr (for gays).

Price: FREE with paying features.

You probably noticed that a lot of websites are blocked in Indonesia, including gambling, torrent and porn. To access them freely (while staying anonymous), you'll need to download a VPN on your phone and computer.

The one I currently use is PureVPN (it works great and it's really cheap), but in the past, I also tried and enjoyed VyprVPN.

You can read more about this topic: Best VPNs for Indonesia and Are VPNs Legal in Indonesia?

Price: Between 2$ and 5$ per month with an annual plan

Similar to Gojek, it is mainly a transportation app (car, motorcycle, taxis) with additional services like food delivery. You can also use it to rent a car or to book a doctor's appointment, pay your bills, or even buy "pulsa" (phone credit).

You should subscribe to their newsletter too as they give out special promotion codes regularly.

Finally, with GrabPay (linked to an OVO account), you can make purchases in hundreds of thousands of shops in Indonesia, from your local warung to a trendy boutique in Grand Indonesia.

Price: Compared with traditional taxis, they cost around 30% less. The discount is even higher if you pay with Ovo (GrabPay).

Gojek is probably the most versatile app in Indonesia. Whatever your needs are, you'll almost always find a Gojek answer to them.

It started as a transportation app like Grab and Uber, but specializing in moto-taxis (Ojek in Indonesian). They now have an army of riders that can be used for regular transport (Go-ride), food delivery (Go-food), grocery delivery (Go-mart), package delivery (Go-send), medicine delivery (Go-med), ticket delivery (Go-tix), etc.

They also offer maid services (Go-maid), car repair (Go-auto), beauty services (Go-glam) and moving truck rental (Go-box).

Last, but not least, you can order Blue Bird taxis through the app.

Price: Each service has its own pricing, usually cheap.  By using the prepaid option Go-pay, you'll get significant discounts and you can use your credit to buy phone credit (Go-pulsa).

HappyFresh
HappyFresh allows you to buy your groceries directly from their app and get them delivered to your door within a couple of hours. They have partnerships with several supermarket chains like Lotte, Carrefour, Ranch Market or Farmer's Market.

I use it for buying beer among other things (see How to Buy Alcohol in Jakarta).

Price: IDR20,000 per delivery + a 10% markup on every item bought (they are not very transparent about this, unfortunately).

I wrote about Mondly in my article How I Learned Indonesian. It is a fun app for learning Indonesian, perfect for those who don't have too much free time available. Typically, I open it when I'm stuck in traffic or waiting for someone at the restaurant. 10 minutes every day for a month is enough to make significant progress.

You can get a special discount if you buy the app through this link: Mondly Promotion.

Price: Around 20 lessons are free, and then you have to pay a few dollars per month.

Google Translate
Make sure you download the Indonesian language package so you can use it offline. Google Translate is available on Play Store and on iTunes.

Price: FREE

In general, Traveloka has lower prices for Indonesian hotels and flights, especially if you are paying with an Indonesian credit card (Mandiri, BNI, BCA, etc).

You can also try the competition, PegiPegi (only in Bahasa) and Tiket.com. All these companies always give promo codes through their websites or through their newsletter.

I don't trust the reviews of Zomato, but you can use their app to read the menus of restaurants around you.

Price: FREE

Similar to Whatsapp, Line is a very popular messenger app in Indonesia. It is often used by small businesses, like warungs or laundry shops. As such, it is useful to install it if you wish to communicate with them.

Price: FREE

Those two marketplaces are the closest things to Amazon or AliExpress in Indonesia. They have an impressive number of items for sale, from discounted plane tickets to phone credit.

I was a bit reluctant to use them at first but I always choose vendors with at least several dozens 5-star ratings and I never encountered any issues. I use Tokopedia the most, especially to buy imported food (pasta, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, etc) or some dry items (like nuts, organic rice, chickpeas, etc.). Prices are generally 30% lower than in my nearby supermarket

Wise
As I wrote in my article "What Is The Cheapest Way to Send Money to Indonesia", the Wise app (formerly TransferWise) allows you to send money to most countries on earth for a fraction of what it would cost with traditional banks or with Western Union. It's essential if you have a business or a girlfriend to support in Jakarta.

Price: 1,5% of the total amount you want to transfer

How to Watch US Netflix from Indonesia?

I had previously written an article to explain how to unblock Netflix in Indonesia. Indeed, for several years, Telkom, a government-owned company and one of the largest Internet Service Providers (ISP) in the country (under the brand IndiHome) had blocked Netflix. The official reason was that its content was deemed offensive to Indonesians, but the real motivation was to protect IndiHome's own streaming service called iFlix.

Anyway, I deleted the content of this article entirely since Telkom/IndiHome finally allowed Netflix on its network. I guess it was bad for their reputation and they were losing customers to their competitors.

That said, now that Netflix is finally easy to watch in Indonesia, you will probably be disappointed when you see their catalog. It is quite poor, with few of the movies or series that you may be used to watch back home available.

To solve this problem and to get access to the US catalog of Netflix (or the French, UK, Australian catalogue), all you need to do is to subscribe to a VPN. It isn't free, but still very cheap (under 2$ per month with PureVPN) and extremely useful if you also care about your privacy online. Read about the benefits of using a VPN here: Best VPNs for Indonesia.

PureVPN is the one I prefer, but you can also use another one like VyprVPN. I used both and they were working well with a few differences.

What you have to understand is that Netflix doesn't allow the use of a VPN and it will track down anyone who uses one, by blocking IPs identified as coming from a VPN.

If you are using a VPN,  you will get the following message when you start watching a movie:
For this reason, you have to make sure that the VPN you use is sophisticated enough to avoid being detected by Netflix. With PureVPN, I rarely have any issues. From time to time, the VPN is detected, but it only lasts for a short time (in the meantime, you can just connect from the UK/Canada/Australia instead of the US for instance as the catalog is pretty similar in those countries).

Another crucial feature you need is speed, obviously, as you need a rather high bandwidth when streaming videos.

My suggestion is that you use the free trials offered by the VPN companies so you can test how well they work. Both VyprVPN and PureVPN have a 30-day money back guarantee that is just perfect for that.

If you are just visiting Indonesia for a few weeks on a holiday or business trip, it can be smart also to use this 30-day money back guarantee as you'll basically get a free VPN during your stay.

Using PureVPN to stream Netflix US from Indonesia:
This is really easy.

After you've logged in to PureVPN, just choose "Location" and select the country from which you wish to stream Netflix. Click on it and it will connect automatically. That's it! Enjoy!

Using VyprVPN to stream Netflix US from Indonesia:
Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Things are slightly more complicated with VyprVPN. To make Netflix work perfectly in Indonesia using it (and to avoid being detected by Netflix), you need to modify its settings a little bit. Let me show you below how to to do that properly:

1) Once logged in, go to VyprVPN Preferences (or Customize), and select Protocol:
Make sure you select either IKEv2 256-bit encryption or Chameleon whenever you want to unblock Netflix in Indonesia. The rest of the time, you can select OpenVPN only.

2) On the main interface, change your location to any of the servers in the US. Again, if you are not watching Netflix, it is better to select a server in Indonesia or Asia as it will be faster.

Troubleshooting:
- You should now be able to watch Netflix US, just as if you were in your home country. The connection will sometimes drop, so you can solve this problem by simply ticking the button "automatically reconnect" in VyprVPN --> Preferences --> Connection
- Another problem you could be facing is that a server might get temporarily blocked by Netflix. In that case, just try another server. For instance, choose Miami instead of Chicago.

The fact that VyprVPN has several US server is an advantage compared to PureVPN as it makes it easier to switch from one server to the other in case one IP gets blocked by Netflix.

Dubai Nightlife: Best Bars and Nightclubs (COVID Update 2021)

Note: I updated this review in April 2021 while the COVID pandemic is still active. I removed several venues that have shut down and added a few new ones. Some are only momentarily closed so you might want to check their Instagram page to see what their status is. Generally speaking, most nightclubs in Dubai are now closed, but bars, cafés, and restaurants are still open with few restrictions.

Dubai nightlife is the best I've tried so far in the Persian/Arab Gulf region.

Compared to that of Doha, Abu Dhabi, or Muscat, it is less conservative and far more foreigner-friendly.

Even though drinking alcohol is restricted, you can find nearly a hundred bars and nightclubs, some of which are busy even on weekdays.

There is a huge diversity of venues: Jazz lounges, rooftop bars, expat pubs, open-air nightclubs, beach cafés, speakeasies, etc. There is even a brand-new warehouse with Berlin-style techno parties once a month.

However, not everything is perfect. The major problem with Dubai nightlife is that to enter most nightclubs, single men are required to book a table. Often, this means you will need to spend over US$500 just for one place.

I will talk more about this in the following nightlife review. If you still have questions after reading it, please leave me a comment at the end of the article!

Hotels Near Dubai Nightlife
You can click on this map of Dubai nightlife to visualize where all the most important nightclubs, bars, and beach clubs are located.
As you can see, there are 3 best party areas:

1) Between Downtown Dubai and the World Trade Center:
This area, in the heart of the business district, has many expensive bars that are popular with expats and executives. Most can be found in the 5-star hotels on Sheikh Zayed Road (Fairmont, Sheraton, Crowne Plaza or Conrad). This is also an interesting location to reach Dubai's best nightclubs like Boa, Base, White, and Soho Garden.

The recommended hotels there are:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Fairmont (rated 8.5/10, US$140 per night) - It has 4 bars and clubs, including Cavalli Club, Bagatelle and Cin Cin.
⭐⭐⭐⭐Carlton Downtown (rated 8.4/10, US$84 per night) - Best value option in this location.

2) Around the Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Resort (JBR):
This is a more touristy part of town with many popular beach clubs (like Zero Gravity or Barasti). There are several bars as well which tends to be a bit less sophisticated and exclusive than the ones on Sheikh Zayed Road. This is the best location for those who are visiting Dubai for the holidays.

The recommended hotels there are:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Sofitel Jumeirah Beach (rated 8.7/10, US$232 per night) - Bordering The Walk, near many bars and the beach.
⭐⭐⭐⭐Rose Park Al Barsha (rated 8.9/10, US$73 per night) - Best value option in this location

3) In Deira and Bur Dubai:
This is the older part of Dubai, starting at the north of Sheikh Rashid Road. There are dozens of bars there, most of which have live music, affordable prices, and.... prostitutes. Each venue targets a different crowd: Filipinos, Indians, Blacks, Westerners, etc. Hotels in this area are generally cheaper than elsewhere.

The recommended hotels there are:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Al Bandar Rotana (rated 9/10, US$135 per night) - No bars there but it is deemed girl-friendly.
⭐⭐⭐⭐Flora Grand Hotel (rated 8.3/10, US$58 per night) - Best value option in this location

Here are a few things you should know to prepare for your nights out in Dubai

Drinking Alcohol
You can drink alcohol in licensed venues (bars and clubs) only if you are over 21. Bouncers will check your ID, so bring your passport with you. If you get tipsy, be discreet as public drunkenness is officially illegal.

If you want to purchase alcohol in a shop (or at the duty-free), you will need a special license. As a visitor, it is quite easy to get one, just go to any of the MMI shops with your passport, and you'll get one for 30 days.

Price of Clubbing
It can be very expensive to party in Dubai, especially if you are a single guy. Indeed, most high-end clubs will force men to book a table, with a minimum spend between AED1,500 (US$410) and AED3000 (US$820).

Generally speaking, in the best nightlife venues, you can expect to pay AED45-55 for a beer (or US$12-15), AED60-80 for a cocktail (or US$16-22), and AED1200 for a cheap bottle of liquor (or US$325).

If you go partying in Deira or Bur Dubai, the prices will often be lower (about 30% less).

Another good way to save money is to check for happy hours. Almost every bar has some, usually between 4 PM and 8 PM. Typically, you will get a buy 1 get 1 promo on selected drinks.

Dress Code
All the upscale bars and clubs will require you to dress well: No shorts, no sandals, no caps, etc. If you are a woman, it is better to wear high heels and a skirt.

Racism
There is a lot of racism in Dubai, much like in the UAE in general. You will be judged based on your ethnicity or skin color.

It is very common to be denied entry at a club in Dubai, especially if you are African, Indian, or Southeast Asian.

When to Party
Dubai's nightlife is at its best during the cooler months, basically from November to May. In fact, during summer (July to August), most of the open-air venues are closed because the heat and humidity are just unbearable (for instance, Soho Garden, White, or 40 Kong). Avoid Dubai during that time if you can.

Another thing to keep in mind is that weekends in Dubai are on Fridays and Saturdays. This means that Thursday nights are the best to go out, and Saturday nights are the worse.

Most clubs will close at 3 AM, but a few stay open until 4 AM (like Toy Room or Base).

Finally, if you visit Dubai during Ramadan, don't worry too much. Most bars and clubs are open, but only after sunset. They can be less crowded, but you can still have fun.

Ladies' Nights
Ladies' nights in Dubai are a big deal. Since girls are rare, the best clubs and bars compete fiercely to attract them. If you are a woman, you will probably never have to pay for any drinks while in the city.

Currently, most of the best ladies' nights happen on Tuesday (at the Pier7, at Gravity Zero). You can check Ladies Night Dubai for an updated list.

Weekly and monthly events:
For a general list of events, you can follow the Facebook pages DubaiNight and Luvevents (trendy parties).

For house/techno parties, check It's Deep Like and Plus Minus.

Internet Censorship in Dubai
Porn websites, as well as any websites that are deemed anti-religious, anti-Islam, or critical of the UAE,  will be blocked by the government. Also, you cannot use WA, Skype or Messenger to make calls (only messaging is allowed).

As a result of this censorship, it is common for expats and visitors to use a VPN. If you don't know what it is, you can read this article: Why Porn Websites are Blocked in Dubai (and How to Unblock Them)?

Lately, I've been using PureVPN and it works great. They are currently having a sale with their 2-year plan costing less than 1.99$ per month.

Soho Beach
This complex about 15 minutes from the city center is the top nightlife destination in Dubai at the moment. This is where you have the best clubs, the best events, and the best crowd.

The main space, Soho Garden, consists of several bars and restaurants (Negroni, Tiki, Glasshouse, Tokyo Vibes, and Bellini). It has an open-air garden in the center which is only opened during the cooler months (September to June). They have famous DJs regularly, for instance, in 2019: Agoria, Joris Voorn, Tiga, Mark Knight, etc. If you manage to pass the strict door policy, expect to spend money (as a single man, it may be difficult to enter without booking a sofa). Drinks cost at least US15-20$ and the minimum spending for a table is US700$ during special events.

On the same location, there are also some separate nightclubs and pool lounges:

Toy Room, the Dubai branch of Toy Room London, is a bottle club focusing on hip-hop/R'n'B. It is an elitist venue with a flashy interior design: Walls are painted with colorful murals and decorated with large neon signs. It is medium-sized and rather intimate, with the DJ mixing in the middle. They've hosted a fair number of famous artists like Ne-Yo, Busta Rhymes, and Coolio. It closes at 4AM.

Code is a techno club with a minimalist design and an underground atmosphere (even though it is expensive and upmarket). Last summer, they had DJs like Gui Boratto, Oxia and Pete Tong.

Soho Beach and Drai are two pool clubs located nearby. They are quite similar but they don't have the same opening days. Check their schedule on Facebook before heading there.

White (in Meydan Hotel)
Voted #16 best club in the world by DJ Mag in 2019, this is the most famous nightclub in Dubai, and maybe even in the Middle East.

It is a huge venue on the rooftop of the Meydan Racecourse Grandstand, which opened starting mid-September until May. They have various kinds of events, from EDM parties to live hip-hop, each time with different décors. It is a bit pretentious and overrated in my opinion, but still worth checking. Expect a mixed crowd of expats and tourists.

Entry is free for girls and couples. For single guys, you need to spend at least AED2,000 (US$550) at a table. The best time to go is on Thursday or Saturday (ladies' night until 1 AM).

Pier 7
This hotspot of Dubai nightlife is a 7-floor building with 7 different bars and restaurants. It is slightly cheaper than elsewhere, and very crowded, so it is usually a good place to start partying. My favorite place there is Atelier M, which is on the rooftop, but it's easy to just walk around and try different bars. The ladies night on Tuesday is very popular since girls can get up to 5 free drinks. Good for meeting tourists and young expats. The dress code is more relaxed than elsewhere.

Boa Nightclub and Lounge in V Hotel
Update 2021: Seems to be closed at the moment.

Elite nightclub, it features an elevated stage with various performances during the evening (dancers, singers, etc).  If you come alone, you can meet people quite easily at the bar. Music is mostly hip-hop and R'n'B. As always with such venues, the dress code is strict (especially on weekends).

Entrance for couples and girls is free, but there is a minimum spend of AED500 for guys (that's actually only 4 or 5 drinks).

Base
Located 5 minutes from Downtown in the Dubai Design District, this open-air nightclub manages to attract world-renowned artists almost every two weeks. Last year, they had Akon, Afrojack, Booba, A$AP Rocky, Tyga, or Bob Sinclar to name a few. The stage will be decorated with a different theme each time there is a special event. You will often have artistic performances as well (dancers, fire breathers, light shows, etc).

On normal days, it is opened on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday until 4AM. As in White, the entrance is free for couples and women, but single guys may be required to book a table (AED2,000). Ladies' night is on Thursday.

Vii in Conrad Hotel
Vii is a restaurant/bar/lounge/nightclub which is popular at the moment. It is rather classy and pleasant, especially the "secret" garden area. The club itself can get pretty packed so book a table if you can (AED3,000 minimum spend). Different events and shows every night of the week: Afro beats, techno, live music, retro hits, EDM, etc. Open every day except Sunday until 3 AM.

Industrial Avenue - in Westin Mina Seyahi
Though located in the 5-star hotel The Westin, it has an underground vibe, inspired by the type of venues you would normally find in London, Berlin or Paris. There is a real dancefloor, and the management doesn't seem so focused on selling tables.

Opened Wednesday to Friday until 3 AM. Hip hop nights on Thursdays, house/techno nights on Fridays.

The dress code is more relaxed, and you can get in for just AED100 with 2 drinks (free for ladies).

Cavalli Club in Fairmont Hotel
High-end nightclub and restaurant with daily live entertainment (dancers, acrobats, singers, DJs, etc). Rich crowd of men, with plenty of unattached ladies willing to meet them. Some might call it a hooker bar with a fancy interior design. Ladies night is on Tuesday. Mainstream and Top 40 music.

If you want a table, the minimum spend is AED2,000. To sit at the bar, you'll need to spend at least AED300 (some reports say AED500).

The Fairmont Hotel has more nightlife venues of interest such as Cin Cin, the Trophy Room and Bagatelle. It is one of the best hotels in Dubai for nightlife lovers.

Armani/Privé in Armani Hotel
This small luxury club inside the Armani Hotel in Burj Khalifa has a good ladies' night on Saturdays with Latin/Reggaeton music. Girls get free drinks until 1 AM. Guys can enter for free, and then each drink will cost between US$15-US$20.

The dancefloor is large enough to dance, and there is plenty of space near the bar for those who don't want to book a table. Some pretty girls.

On the 122nd floor of Burj Khalifa, there is also a panoramic bar/restaurant called At.mosphere. It is supposedly the highest in the world.

Billionaire Mansion (in Taj Hotel)
Part of the Billionaire Life brand (created by the jet-setter Flavio Briatore), this complex features 2 restaurants (a Japanese and an Italian), a terrace (Diamond Kalian), a karaoke, and a nightclub. As the name suggests, it is very pricey and exclusive. Most guests come to have dinner while watching various performances (mostly dancers). Most male customers are rich expats and locals. The girls all seem to be Eastern European sugar babies in their 20s. Closes at 4AM.

They have two ladies' night. The best one is called Monroe Nights, every Tuesday, with free-flow drinks all night long. Women can also have a 3-course dinner for AED250. There is another one on Sunday, called The List, with urban music (rap, R'n'B, hip-hop).

Mantis in Emirates Financial Center
This new club in DIFC (Dubai International Finance Center) is opened from Wednesday to Friday until 4 AM. Girls can drink and eat sushis for free every day until 1 AM. No dancefloor so it's better to book a table (starting AED3,000). There are several shows to watch, from live music to sexy dancers.

Other Popular Bars in Dubai

The Irish Village - 3 branches in Dubai for this Irish pub, full of regulars.

Czar is a bar targeting the Russian community in Dubai
These nightlife venues target specific communities.

→ Filipinos: BoracayClub 7 or Bodega Garage (all great to try if you want to meet Filipinas and spend less money on drinks).
→ Indians: PulseInka. Check also the events organized by AKS NightsDejaVu, or Desi Night in UAE
→ Lebanese: 961LB
→ Russians: Czar and Chameleon Club.
→ Arabs (Khaliji music): SolitaireOmni and Drama
→ Africans: I'm not sure they have their own club, but there are many in Club Boudoir.

Pool and Beach Clubs:

Zero Gravity Beach Club
The beach clubs in Dubai are a nightlife destination of their own. You can go there in the afternoon for a brunch (with free-flow drinks), then stay until late for partying. Beware as most of them are closed during summer months. Here are the best ones:

Zero Gravity - Huge and crowded beach club. I recommend their brunch on Thursday and Friday with 4 hours of free-flow alcohol and food.
Barasti Beach - Legendary beach club among the party crowd. A bit touristy and tacky, but perfect for those who want to mingle and flirt. Free entrance.

Overall, Dubai is not a good destination to meet a girl, especially at night.

As elsewhere in the Middle-east, it is almost impossible to date a local girl. They rarely go out, and if they do, they don't mingle with foreigners (too conservative, too rich, and too protected). It is not very important anyway since they only represent a fraction of the women staying in Dubai (over 90% of the population is foreign).

There are women from every single nationality on earth in Dubai, but you could split them into just a few groups:

Staff workers, mostly from Southeast Asia, India, and Africa (waitresses, shopkeepers, maids, receptionists, etc). They are the easiest to meet, either online on Tinder or in bar/clubs during ladies' nights.

Mid-to-upper level expatriates: They aren't as numerous as men, but there are still plenty of them, from various nationalities. They are usually quite westernized, even if they are from Asia or the Middle East. Many are English teachers. The single ones are usually looking for expats, so they can be hard to date if you are a tourist.

Flight attendants working for Emirates. There are thousands of them, usually young, pretty, and single. They are in high demand, so you'll be able to date them only if you are good-looking,  confident, and reasonably wealthy. It will really help if you are living in Dubai as well.

Short-term visitors: Dubai welcomes a fair number of tourists, especially from the nearby countries that are more conservative. You'll find them in places such as Pier 7 or Barasti Beach Club.

Hookers and "professional girlfriends": There is an incredible number of prostitutes in Dubai, from low-end to high-class. They can be found everywhere: In clubs, in the streets, or online (for instance on the sugar baby website Seeking Arrangement).

Prostitution in Dubai
It's hard to talk about Dubai nightlife without mentioning its huge prostitution scene. You will see hookers or escorts everywhere, from the cheap ethnic bars in Deira to the most exclusive clubs in the 5-star hotels.

In the latter, prostitution is rather discreet. You will see some young women, from every part of the world (but mostly from Eastern Europe and Russia), sitting by themselves at a bar and enjoying drinks. If you smile at them, they will approach you and reveal who they are. The most beautiful ones may ask over AED3,000 for one night.

In Deira, things are more straightforward. In the hotel bars of that area, 100% of girls are prostitutes, and they will go straight to your table. Typically, they will ask between AED700 and AED2,000.

Here are some of those famous clubs (most of them have a DJ/live band and a dancefloor).

Premier Bar in Hyatt Regency - Famous spot with over a hundred girls from every ethnicity. Pricier than elsewhere. AED200 for entrance after midnight.
Red Square in Moscow Hotel - Mostly Eastern European girls - Weekend entrance fee is AED150.
Ratsky in Fortune Karama Hotel - Bar full of Filipinas - Affordable
Jules in Le Méridien Centre: Lots of Vietnamese and Chinese girls. The entry fee is AED65 on a weekday.

Guide to Meeting and Dating Indonesian Girls (2021)

The following guide is a datasheet with all the essential information you'll need to know about meeting and dating Indonesian girls.

It's a list of questions that people have asked me over time. I tried to answer them as concisely as possible so you won't lose time reading it. If you still have interrogations, please ask them in the comment section below.

What Are the Best Cities to Meet Indonesian Girls?

1) Jakarta and its suburbs (Bekasi, Depok, Tangerang)
The whole metropolitan area has 35 million inhabitants in total. That's probably several million single women. No need to say more.

Considering the sheer size of this megalopolis, it is essential to stay near the city center, preferably along Jalan Sudirman, to make it easier for girls to meet with you.

2) Surabaya
The second city in Indonesia with over 3 million people. It's a rather clean city, well-managed, and affordable. Very few foreigners live there. Surabaya girls are reputed to make excellent girlfriends or wives.

3) South Bali
The area between Kuta, Seminyak, and Denpasar attracts Indonesian girls from all over the country. Many are looking to marry foreigners. They tend to be more open-minded, which is one of the reasons they left their hometown and moved to Bali.

4) Bandung
Only 3 hours away from Jakarta, Bandung is the capital of West Java and the third largest Indonesian city. It is home to a large student population. Sundanese girls are considered among the most beautiful in Indonesia.

What are the Best Dating Apps for Indonesia?
There are dozens of dating apps and sites to meet Indonesian girls, but only a few of them have a really large database of users. My favorite ones are the following:

1) Tinder, Bumble, OkCupid
Thousands of profiles available. Most girls on these apps expect you to live in Indonesia so it might not be great if you're only passing by. They work best with guys who are young and good-looking.

Those apps are extremely popular with Indonesian guys as well so you'll probably need to pay something extra to promote your profile and be seen by more girls.

IndonesianCupid is perfect for men who are not living in Indonesia. It's a more traditional match-making website, with a focus on personality more than looks. Recommended to prepare for a trip. Free to register here.

What Are Indonesian Girls Like?
While each girl is different, there are certain personality traits that you will find in most Indonesian girls. This is especially true for those who belong to the middle class and who were educated in Indonesia. That's because they were raised in a similar environment, with modest means, in rather conservative and religious families.

Here are some traits that are characteristic of Indonesian girls:

- Easy-going, cheerful: Indonesians usually have a positive outlook on life. As long as there is enough food on the table, they will be in a good mood to laugh, joke and tease.

- Kind, generous: She should be genuinely concerned about your well-being. Also, she won't hesitate to help a family member or a friend who needs a handout. Unfortunately, it might be done using your money.

- Religious, superstitious: She is most likely to be a believer. The ones who date foreigners may more open-minded, but still, they'll ask their boyfriend to convert if there is a difference of religion. It is also very likely that she will believe in ghosts.

- Reserved, touchy: She might be shy to express feelings or emotions. That can become an issue within your couple if she doesn't tell you when she is angry at you for instance. It is often difficult to criticize her without causing drama. Always be very careful with your words.

- Group and Family-oriented: In general, her behavior will tend to match her family and her communities' expectations. Being unique or original is not valued as much as in the West.

- Strong: The average Indonesian girl probably had a much tougher life than the average Western girl. As a result, I believe they have a unique ability to overcome hardships.

- Pragmatic: She will accept and be satisfied with a situation that is not ideal, as long as it fulfills her most important requirements (economic security is often the main one).

Do Indonesian Girls Like Foreigners?
I received this question dozens of times, from people of various ethnicities: White, African, Indian, Arab, Turkish, Chinese, etc.

Indonesians tend to categorize people based on their skin color, with "white" being the most desirable. Caucasians, also called bule, clearly have an advantage, though not all girls like them (read Indonesian Girls Who Never Date Foreigners). Latinos and Turkish people are often considered "bule".

Japanese and Koreans are also popular, partly due to the influence of their culture (Korean dramas, movies, mangas, K-Pop, J-Pop, etc).

With Arabs, it depends if you are a Moroccan, a Saudi, or a French of Arab descent. The latter will be considered as a bule. The others might be attractive to more conservative girls. Being Muslim is usually an advantage with Muslim girls, for obvious reasons.

Darker skins, especially Indians and Africans may have more difficulties. I have heard countless time girls telling me they wouldn't date black people.

That said, skin color isn't everything. I know white guys who can't get Indonesian girls, and I know black ones who manage to score every night. What's their secret? They are friendly, well-educated, well-dressed, polite, handsome, and they have good jobs.

Overall, being a foreigner may help or hinder you, depending on your ethnicity/nationality. But in the end, you can still make a difference with your personality/personal situation.

What Are the Dos and Don'ts When Dating An Indonesian Girl?
If you are dating an Indonesian girl, here are a few recommendations:

- Pay for her drinks/food/movie ticket
I think you should always invite her unless she has a high-paying job or she comes from a rich family. If she insists to pay, just tell her that she can buy you coffee later.

If you don't want to pay for her, then choose an affordable restaurant with prices that match local salaries (you can consider that IDR 5 million per month is considered a pretty good salary for a young Indonesian in her 20s).

- Don't dress like a tourist
Jakarta is a business city, it's not Bali. Short pants and flip-flops are only acceptable on weekends. For the rest of the week, make the effort to dress up.

- Meet her in a bar/café/restaurant that has AC
The outside air in Jakarta is hot and polluted. If you don't want to look like a mess after a 1-hour dinner, choose a venue that has AC.

- Don't make derogatory comments about Indonesia
Talk about Indonesia in a positive way. Don't spend your time complaining as it will make her feel embarrassed.

I remember a terrible date I had where I started talking about how corrupt the Indonesian police was, and then the girl started crying because her dad was a policeman.

- Don't criticize her religion
A very touchy topic that often ends up with a disagreement. You won't change her view, so what's the point?

- Don't tell her she is skinny, short or dark
While you may mean that as a compliment, Indonesians usually perceive those as criticism.

Should I Send or Give Money to My Girlfriend?
Unless you are dating a rich Indonesian girl, there will probably come a time in your relationship where money becomes an issue.

While it may seem normal to pay for dinners or trips, you may feel uncomfortable sending her or giving her money. After all, it is not a common thing to do in Western countries (unless your girlfriend is a sugar baby).

In Indonesia, on the contrary, it is considered normal for a boyfriend to pay for certain expenses (accommodation, phone, school fees, etc) or to give money. It is a form of commitment, and also a way to show you care and understand her situation.

Personally, I don't see any problem with that, and I've helped a few exes in the past.

Still, there are some precautions you may want to take before heading to the ATM, especially if you don't have a lot of money for yourself already.

For instance:
- Can you be sure that she is not giving the money to someone else (an Indonesian boyfriend, her dad, a friend, etc)?
- Is she honest with you about why she needs money and how she intends to spend it?
- Are there other guys giving her money as well?

What you can do is calculate how much she earns compared to how much she spends. If she is unemployed but possesses the latest iPhone, a car, an apartment, and designer clothes, this means that she almost certainly has one or several generous sponsors.

Don't be naive also. If you met the girl in Bats, CJs, or Dragonfly, or on a sugar baby site like SeekingArrangement, the girl will probably try to extort as much money from you as she can. If you are OK with that (and if you can afford it), why not.

How to Send Money From Indonesia to Another Country?

Update 2021: When I wrote this article, it was not possible to send money from Indonesia to another country using Transferwise (now Wise). The company has improved its offer and this option is now available. You can check here for more details: Wise

While it is relatively easy to send money from abroad to Indonesia, it can be more complicated to do the opposite: To send money from Indonesia (IDR) to another country with a different currency.

Since my salary is paid in rupiah on an Indonesian bank account, I often have to send money back to France and I’ve used several methods to do so.

In the article below, I will give you my best recommendations based on my personal experience. I’ve ranked the options from best to worst, depending on the speed of the transfer, its convenience, and its cost.

If you feel I’ve forgotten something or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to write me a comment.

This is by far the easiest way to send money from Indonesia to abroad. It is quite new so I’ve only started to use it recently and it has been a game-changer.

This app, available on both iPhone and Android, is licensed as a remittance company by both the Indonesian and the Australian government (Austrac), and it is regulated under the rules from Bank Indonesia. You may have heard of it under its company name, PT Indo Koala. It is actually quite famous as they have already handled over US$15 million to date.

It works a bit like Wise: They keep money in the banks of various countries and when you pay them with rupiahs, they just convert the money and make a local transfer from their own foreign bank account to yours.

It is really simple and you can do everything online in less than 10 minutes. Just enter the amount you want to send on their website Transfez.com, then you will see exactly how much you will get in the currency you choose.

(note that for your first transaction, your ID will need to be verified to comply with anti-money laundering regulations)

At the current rate, for a transfer of IDR 5,000,000 from Indonesia to France (euros), you should receive around 300 euros:
This is just around 5 euros less than the exchange rate provided by Google (see below), and it corresponds to an IDR 74,000 fee + a small mark-up on the exchange rate. To my knowledge, this is the cheapest price you can get for such a transfer.
The speed of the transfer varies depending on the country you are sending to. For Britain, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and India, it takes just 15 minutes. For Brazil or South Korea, it's just a matter of a few hours, while for Europe, one working day is required before the money appears on your bank account.

The only problem with Transfez is that it does not allow transfers to every country yet. You can send to most of Europe, to Australia, to China, to India, to Japan, to South Korea, to Malaysia, to Singapore, to Thailand, and to many more, but not to the USA or Canada. Hopefully, they add this possibility soon.

Free Money Transfer
Use the promo code "100BARS" just before paying. Your first transaction with Transfez will be free of charge!

Bank Account
If Transfez doesn’t send money to your country, your second-best solution is to simply transfer money from your Indonesian bank account to the one in your home country. You can do it online in some cases, but most often you’ll need to go to an Indonesian bank branch.

You will need to provide the teller with your foreign bank’s swift code and/or IBAN, as well as your account details.

I’ve done this a few times with my bank (BNI) and I paid around IDR 300,000 in fees for a 10 million rupiah transfer. This included the currency conversion fees, but not the receiving bank fees which were an additional 20 euros. You can also choose to let your home-country bank do the conversion, but it is usually cheaper to do it with your Indonesian bank.

Western Union
This last solution is for those who don’t have an Indonesian bank account and who want to send to a country not serviced by Transfez.

You will need to go to a Western Union agent, then pay a fee of IDR 350,000, and there will be a hidden exchange rate fee (mark-up from the normal rates).

This is not really convenient and it is expensive, but it is fast and the service is reliable.

Conclusion
At the moment, there is no doubt that Transfez is the best solution to transfer money from Indonesia to the world. It is much cheaper, more convenient, and faster. Also, with the current Covid-19 crisis, it is certainly safer as you can do everything online without the need to go to an office and to handle some paper bills. As I mentioned above, you can get your first transfer with them for free just by using the code "100BARS".

To download the Transfez app on your smartphone, click here. Before sending money, you can also check their live currency rate on their website. Don't forget to share it with your friends or anyone you think might be interested!

Cheapest Way to Send Money to Indonesia (Avoid Bank Fees!)

There are many reasons people send money to Indonesia, but only a few ways that are cheap, easy, and safe.

This article will be very useful to you if you are:
- A foreigner living abroad who supports his Indonesian girlfriend financially
- An Indonesian working abroad who needs to remit his salary in his Indonesian bank account
- An expat who wants to transfer funds to Indonesia to make a purchase (car, home) or an investment
- A traveler who lost his wallet and urgently needs money

Since I've been living in Indonesia, I have tried different methods to send money to the country.

The first time, I simply asked my bank to make a transfer to an Indonesian account. The experience was gruesome: It was complicated, it took several days for the money to arrive, and the total cost was almost 10% of the amount I sent. My bank charged a transfer fee of 29 euros + a commission of 3.5% on the exchange rate. Finally, the Indonesian bank also took a fee.

For my second transfer, I decided to try something else and chose Western Union. The process was easier and faster, but in the end, it was even more expensive than a bank transfer.

Thankfully, in the past few years, new players have emerged, such as Wise, that have drastically reduced the cost of sending money to Indonesia. Even better, they are more convenient (100% online) and faster to use. The most famous and most trusted is Wise (previously known as TransferWise).

In this article, I will explain to you each option I ever used to send money to Indonesia, starting from the cheapest one:

Wise (previously TransferWise): Cheapest and Easiest Way to Send Money to Indonesia
Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
You can make your own transfer simulation with just one click here
Created in 2011 by one of Skype's founders, Wise is a fin-tech startup that was recently declared a unicorn (more than $1 billion in valuation). It is a game-changer when it comes to international money transfers.

Compared with traditional banks, Wise does not actually transfer any money. It maintains bank accounts in key currencies in various countries. When you make a transfer request, for instance from USD to IDR, they will debit your US bank account from their US bank account and credit your Indonesian bank account from their Indonesian bank account.

Using Wise, the cost of sending money from abroad to Indonesia is only 1,5% of the transferred amount (minimum charge IDR14,500).

If you transfer USD1,000, it means you will only pay USD15 (+ a credit card charge depending on your bank). There are no hidden fees and they use the official exchange rate. That's at least 8 times less than what you would pay with traditional banks.

Pros:
➝ The cheapest way to send money from abroad to Indonesia to my knowledge
➝ As simple as it can be, just like booking a hotel room or buying stuff from any e-commerce site
➝ Less than 10 minutes needed to make the request
➝ They do not take a commission on the currency exchange rate (they use the official rate)
➝ You can make an accurate simulation of the cost of the transfer in a few seconds on their website
➝ They will tell you in advance when the money will be transferred and you can follow your money in real-time through their app
➝ 100% transparent: They let you know how much commission they took and the exchange rate they used

Cons:
Available for transfer from USD to IDR but not yet from IDR to USD Update 2021: It is now possible to send from Indonesia to another country
➝ A limited number of currencies you can transfer from: EUR, USD, Pound, AUD, JPY, SGD. You can check here if your home currency is accepted. Update 2021: A lot more currencies are now available!
➝ You need an Indonesian bank account to transfer the money (You must know your IBAN and your SWIFT/BIC number)
➝ The transfer is not automatic and it may take from 1 to 2 days to be completed (for an Indonesian transfer)

Western Union: Only for Urgent Money Transfer to Indonesia
Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
Unlike Wise, Western Union charges a fee but also takes a commission on the exchange rate
Western Union is facing tough competition but it can still be a useful way to send money to Indonesia. In particular, if you are a traveler who lost his personal belongings and need fast money, there are no better alternatives (actually, there is also MoneyGram which is similar).

I was using Western Union a lot when I didn't have an Indonesian bank account. You can pick up the money sent in cash in any of their agents locations (for instance in post offices - there are thousands in Indonesia).

The problem with Western Union is that it is expensive. If you want to transfer 1,000USD to IDR (instant transfer from an agent to an agent), it will cost you over USD80 + an hidden exchange rate fee of around IDR500,000 (as a reminder, it costs only USD15 with Wise).

If you transfer the money to an Indonesian bank account, it is cheaper yet still over 40$ and it takes a few days.

Pros:
➝ You can send money to Indonesia within minutes
➝ Money can be sent even if both the sender and the receiver do not have a bank account
➝ Works for virtually every country
➝ You can pay directly on Western Union's website using your credit/debit card

Cons:
➝ Very pricey if you choose fast service and to send/receive money in agent's location
➝ Hidden commission on the currency exchange rate
➝ If you send money to an agent location, you can only use the service during operation hours (close on weekends)

A Cheap Way to Avoid: Skrill iT
Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
Skrill iT is a mix between Western Union and Wise
On paper, Skrill has quite many advantages. It is fast and cheaper than Western Union (about 3% from total amount Vs. up to 15%). Also, the person who receives the money does not need to have an Indonesian bank account. she can just take the money in any Alfamart in Indonesia with her ID.

However, I received a negative comment regarding their company. I decided to publish it here in case some of you would be interested in their service for a transfer:

"Hi Thibaud, I registered with Skrill, and tried to send money to Jakarta for my girlfriend. The amount was deducted from my card and appeared in "My account" in Skrill.

However, the status of the transfer appeared as "pending" at first, and then later changed to "canceled". I tried to make another transfer, which was also not delivered to the recipient.

I've sent multiple emails to the Skrill support team. Number of responses from them:  Zero. I tried to contact them on Facebook & Twitter with the same result (Zero support).

Finally, I had to spend some $5 to call their London office - the guy there didn't have a clue what the problem was. When I asked how I could get my money back, he said that I needed to speak with a SENIOR manager, and it could only happen 24 hours after my initial call.

So, as of now, I'm waiting for these 24 hours to pass to call London again and "beg" the senior manager to have my money back.

Don't know how all this looks to you, but for me, it appears as a completely unprofessional business on the edge of being a scam.

Money not delivered, nobody answering emails, having to spend extra money for international calls, and I still don't know if I will ever get my money back.

Last but not least - I had a look at the Skrill reviews (which I should have done BEFORE using it) - and it's full of similar stories from other customers: money not delivered, zero support, very difficult to get your money back".

My conclusion? Just stick to Wise. It is rated 4.7 on the Apple Store and recommended by the Financial Times, The Economist, Wired, etc.

Other Ways to Send Money To Indonesia
Some online currency exchange companies are starting to offer international money transfers now with competitive rates. They will always be more expensive than Wise though. They can be useful only if you intend to send a lot of money to Indonesia (over 10,000$). The most famous companies are TorFXHiFX or OFX. I would advise you to try the latter as it has an online simulation tool.

PayPal is very cheap when you send money in the same currency to another PayPal accounts holder. That can be interesting in a few situations, but for most people (international transfers from a PayPal account to a bank account), it is not worth it. When you add up the fee and the commission on the exchange rate, it costs about 80$ for 1,000$ sent.

If you know a cheaper and more convenient way than Wise to send money to Indonesia, please leave me a comment below. I wouldn't mind saving even more on my transfers. I'm also interested if you have tips about how to send money from Indonesia to another country.

Hero Nightclub (Hanoi)

Hero is a popular nightclub in Hanoi for both foreigners and Vietnamese. It usually get crowded after midnight, when most bars in the Old Quarter close down, and it remains busy until closing time at 3AM (after that, you can try your luck in the late-night bar Tom's).

Hero is located in the West Lake area so you'll need a short taxi/Uber ride to reach it. Some taxis may take you there for free as they get paid by the club.

The entrance is free but the drinks are more expensive than the average. It remains reasonable though (VND60,000 for a beer, VND80,000 for spirits, VND50,000 for a laughing gas balloon). Many Vietnamese will buy a bottle (starting VND1,000,000) and share it with a group of friends at a table, with a shisha and a fruit platter.

The club is rather large, with a high ceiling and a mezzanine. The design is not remarkable but I like the set-up as it is easy to meet people (long bar, some narrow spaces). The DJ booth is large, elevated, with an LCD screen behind it. You also have 2 iron cages for sexy dancers to perform.

The music is a mix of Top 40 and commercial EDM/Hip Hop songs. Nothing that you haven't already heard a thousand times before. They have guest DJs once in a while, sometimes foreigners (in that case, the entrance fee might reach VND200,000).

Most customers are well-dressed Vietnamese. I would guess that there are some freelance prostitutes and many gays among them. There are also about 20% of foreigners, particularly young travelers/backpackers looking for a girl to pick up.

Overall: Hero is one of the few clubs where foreigners and Vietnamese party together in Hanoi. Even though I didn't like the music, it is a fun place and one of your only options after 1AM.

I took this short video inside (the bouncer stopped me as I was starting to film the sexy dancers):

Savage Nightclub (Hanoi) - Techno Music

Savage is my favorite nightclub in Hanoi (by far). Located 15 minutes by taxi from the Old Quarter, in West Lake, it is just a few months old yet already crowded every night (with mostly expats).

It was opened by the Hong-Kong-based Cliché Record label which is owned by a group of 4 French friends (Jean-François Amadei, Samy Stouky, Ouissam Mokretar, and Julie Mira).

Savage is quite difficult to find as their outside sign is almost invisible. In fact, I had to look around for 10 minutes before I finally heard some music coming from a basement. As I was walking down the stairs, I was still unsure if I was in a club or in someone's house.

At the beginning of the night, Savage was more of a lounge/bar with great cocktails (around VND130,000 each but they had a promo Buy 1 Get 1 Free) and a relaxed vibe. The music was not too loud and it was easy to talk to other people, especially at the bar.

After 1AM, the sound got louder and people started dancing. Some moved from the lounge to a small "dark" room. This is Hanoi's version of an underground club. The two foreign DJs played techno/tech-house but this is likely to change depending on the schedule. What is for sure is that you won't hear commercial EDM/Hip-hop/House. The sound system could not be better (Funktion One, the standard among the best nightclubs in the world).

I had to leave around 2AM as my friend was getting sick, but the club does not close until 4AM or 5AM. This makes Savage the best late-night club in Hanoi. Note that their door policy is that you cannot enter after 2.30AM.

Overall: If you enjoy quality electronic music, you won't find a better nightclub than Savage in Hanoi. Very recommended.

Gay-friendly nights once a month. More information on their social media below.

Hanoi Nightlife Guide - Vietnam (Updated 2021)

I just spent two weeks in Hanoi and I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the nightlife.

When I was living in Saigon, people kept telling me that Hanoi was a conservative town with unfriendly people, a curfew at midnight and a suffocating weather.

In fact, I found barely any differences between the two cities, and particularly at night. Saigon is in my Top 3 party destination in Southeast Asia, and Hanoi is not far behind.

The hundreds of bars, clubs, lounges, spas and karaokes in Hanoi range from extremely basic (4 walls and a stool) to world-class sophisticated venues. You'll rarely pay an entrance fee for any nightclubs and the drinks are usually cheap, even in the more upmarket spots. The crowd is usually young, with many travelers and backpackers on a budget. They are in the city to have fun, and you'll meet people very easily even if you come by yourself.

This review is a summary of my findings during my stay: The best bars, the best clubs, the best places to stay, and how to socialize. If I forgot something important, please don't hesitate to leave a comment at the end of the post.

Hotels near Hanoi Nightife

You can read my article Best Hotels near Hanoi Nightclubs for more details about the best places to stay in the city.

If you don't have time to read it, here is a quick summary:

The best location is anywhere near the Saint Joseph Cathedral. It is walking distance from almost everything including the airport shuttle, the train station, the Hoàn Kiếm Lake, the Opera and the Old Quarter. 80% of the bars and clubs listed in this review are also within 2 kilometers.

Some of the best accommodation in this area are
→ More than $100 per night: The 5-star Apricot Hotel (home of Playboy Club)
→ Between $50 and $100: The Chi
 Under $30: Church Legend Hotel
→ Backpacker: Chien Hostel and Hanoi Backpacker Hostel are famous for being party hostels.

Nightlife Areas in Hanoi
To make things simple, I would say there are 3 major nightlife areas in Hanoi.

→ The Old Quarter is where most backpackers, tourists and Vietnamese students hang out. It is cheap, cramped and messy.
→ The West Lake is where expats and trendy Vietnamese party. It is naturally more expensive and the crowd is older.
→ The Historical Center, from Hoàn Kiếm Lake down to Tran Hung Dao street, is a posh area, particularly around the Opera House. You'll find mostly bars and clubs targeting rich Vietnamese/tourists.

Old Quarter: Tourists and Young Vietnamese

Old Quarter nightlife
A dense, action-packed district with at least 200 nightlife spots, most often small bars selling cheap draught beer (Bia hơi - as low as VND4,000 or $0,17 per glass). It is popular with a young Vietnamese crowd (mostly students) and foreigners (backpackers, tourists). 95% of the venues close at 1AM (official curfew), but if you poke around you'll find hidden bars to party until at least 3AM.

You can start your evening at the intersection of Tạ Hiện and Lương Ngọc Quyến streets, also called "Beer Corner". It reserved for pedestrians and from there you can just walk from one place to the other.

Many bars seem to have been inspired by the Communist ideology: Identical design, identical product, no name (only a number) and little attention paid to customer service. That said, getting drunk on those tiny stools is still a fun local experience. You'll notice that a lot of people are breathing into balloons of laughing gas. Those are not illegal in Vietnam and they cost $1 or $2. They give a mild euphoria or a feeling of numbness for a few minutes. I have the impression that they make your hangover worse on the next day though.

On your pub crawl, you may include some more proper bars and clubs, for instance:

Bars:
Factory 47: A foreign-owned, hipster bar. Better music than elsewhere but also more expensive. Open from 10AM to 3AM.

Local, next to Beer Corner, it has a DJ playing Top 40/EDM and a dance floor.

Clubs:
1900 Le Theatre: My favorite club in the Old Quarter. A modern venue with live music (usually in Vietnamese) and DJs playing commercial EDM and Hip Hop. Mixed crowd. Recommended for meeting new people. Closes at 1AM.

The Opera: This club is more oriented towards Vietnamese groups, with DJs playing mostly Vina House. There is an entrance fee and prices are quite expensive.

👌Food: A great way to explore the Old Quarter is to join the famous Hanoi Street Food Tour (#1 activity on TripAdvisor). In 3 hours, you'll have a chance to try about a dozen delicious Northern Vietnam dishes.

West Lake (or Tây Hồ District): Expats and Trendy Vietnamese
In this neighborhood, trendy and chic venues are spread out, principally on the east side of the Lake. The crowd is mostly made of expats and rich Vietnamese. To go there, I advise you to use Uber (only VND50,000 from downtown).

Some of the best venues are:

Bars:
Standing Bar: One of the hip bars in Hanoi at the moment. It is built on two floors with an outdoor area from where you can see the lake. They serve 16 types of craft beer, local and imported, for around VND80,000-90,000 per half-pint. You can also eat some tapas. Events include stand-up comedy and live music.

Furbrew: Also a craft beer bar, owned by a Danish brewmaster, with an outdoor garden. Small beers (175ml) cost around VND45,000 and a pint (375ml) double this price. Closes at 11PM.

The Republic: Aussie-owned expat bar. Good for eating Western food and watching sports (NFL, AFL, football, rugby, etc). Popular hangout on Sundays. Lake view. Close early at midnight.

Unicorn: A dive bar that you could easily miss, but worth a try for their affordable cocktails. Perfect to start the evening.

The Kneipe: A laid back German bar with reasonable prices, decent pub fare and live music/DJ.

Clubs:
Savage: A new nightclub, bar and lounge in the West Lake area. It is owned and managed by 4 French based in Hong Kong. Popular with expats. Techno and non-commercial electronic music. Closes very late. Expensive. Good cocktails. My favorite nightclub in Hanoi.

Hero: One of the most popular nightclubs in the city with a mixed crowd of Vietnamese and foreigners. Good setup on two floors. Reasonable prices.

Hanoi Rock City: The main alternative event and art space in Hanoi, it features live bands, DJ performances, open-mic nights and exhibitions. Entrance is usually free but drinks pricier than elsewhere.

Historical City Center: Rich Vietnamese and Tourists
The Historical City Center (excluding Old Quarter) from the northern tip of Hoàn Kiếm Lake until Tran Hung Dao street is filled with upmarket restaurants, lounges, bars, and nightclubs. Many are targeting Vietnamese, and more particularly the high-society (Hi-So). You may see some expats and tourists in some specific venues as well.

Below are some of the current hot-spots:

Bars:
Cosa Nostra: A classy, minimalist bar with concrete floors and walls. Comfortable leather sofas. 2 floors including a small terrace. Cheapest beer costs VND100,000. Closes at midnight.

Kumqat Tree Hanoi: A speakeasy bar on 2 floors with live music or DJ events. Good for cocktails.

Binh Minh Jazz Club: Most famous jazz club in Hanoi. No cover charge but drinks are expensive.

Elsewhere
Outside of these areas, there are many nightclubs, KTVs and beer clubs targeting Hanoi's middle to upper class.

Vina House Clubs
Many of these nightclubs have a similar concept. They cater for groups of friends, and the entertainment consists of a DJ playing loud "Vina House", with some sexy dancers performing on a podium.

In case you never hear of it, Vina House, or Viet House, is a specialty of Vietnam which is just as remarkable as Banh Mi or Pho. It is a crossover between Pop Music and Techno with almost the same bassline on every track. Here is an example:
There are at least 15 Vina House nightclubs in downtown Hanoi, and I went to most of them. To be honest, it was a bit repetitive as they are not really different from one another.

Basically, they are all quite luxurious in appearance, with flashy lights, modern LED displays, high tables and a few VIP corners. Vietnamese come in groups, sometimes only guys, sometimes with girls whom I'm not sure if they are their girlfriends or lady companions.

There is a DJ, often a sexy girl, who mixes Vina House, and a male MC who shouts at the crowd between songs. The sound is always deafening (bring earplugs). In most places, you also have sexy dancers wearing a different uniform every night. The larger clubs have live bands, unfortunately singing very boring Vietnamese pop.

Dress code: Guys will be expected to wear shoes and long pants. For girls, high heels and skirts are recommended, but as a foreigner, you'll manage to enter without.

Those clubs are not recommended for clubbers who are 1) alone 2) penniless. Even though the entrance is free, you'll be expected to buy a bottle of alcohol (between VND1,000,000 and VND2,000,000 for the cheapest ones) if you want to get a table. The choice of drinks by the glass or by the bottle is limited and pricey (a beer will cost from VND100,000 to VND200,000). Typically, Vietnamese will also add a shisha and a fruit platter to their table. They don't really need it but it's all about showing off how much money you can spend.

The service is particularly attentive because all waiters expect a tip. Even when you go to the toilet the janitor will do everything he can to get a few dongs, from turning on the faucet to giving you a back massage.

The best Vina House nightclub I've been to in Hanoi is called Fame. It is packed any day of the week and features some of the hottest dancers in Vietnam.

Viet-Style Beer Gardens and Beer Bars
Unlike the ones in Thailand that are often laid-back, beer gardens in Vietnam resemble nightclubs and usually have a DJ/loud music. The only difference is that they are cheaper, they serve food and they are partially in the open-air.

The New Spinx Beer Bar is one of the most impressive I've seen in the whole country. It has a massive entrance resembling a temple, a staff dressed up with Egyptian costumes and a huge stage featuring live music acts, DJs and sexy dancers. Beer costs from VND40,000 for a glass of Tiger up to VND120,000 for imported Belgian beers. Sparta is similar, but with a Greek/Roman theme.

Closer from the tourist area, the famous beer club chain Vuvuzela has opened a branch near the Cathedral and another one in the Old Quarter. They close early though and they didn't seem to be so crowded when I passed by.

Meeting People in Hanoi
Online dating is your best friend for meeting new people  up in Hanoi as long as you use the appropriate websites/apps. Read my article Top Dating Apps and Websites in Vietnam.

Tinder and Bumble: These popular apps work well in the city with younger people, whether they are Vietnamese or foreign.

Vietnam Cupid: This website is the best for those who want to meet a Vietnamese girl but who are not yet in Vietnam. They have 500 to 1,000 girls online at any time, most of whom do not mind if you are staying abroad.

Seeking.com: The most beautiful girls are on Seeking.com, but they are looking for sugar daddies. If that's your thing, you'll be in heaven there.

Best Dating Apps in Vietnam (Updated 2021)

Meeting a girl in Vietnam has never been easier thanks to the Internet. Plenty of dating websites and apps have been launched in the past 10 years, giving you access to thousands of single Vietnamese girls from all backgrounds.

For guys, Vietnam is like a treasure chest. Just upload a few decent pictures of yourself, write an interesting profile, and you are normally guaranteed to match with hundreds of pretty and smart girls.

There is a catch, though:

95% of Vietnamese girls are looking for serious relationships, so forget about easy one-night stands. It may happen from time to time, but that's not the best country for that (check my article Best Countries to Meet Girls in Asia).

I've used all the dating apps and sites available in Vietnam. In this article, I'll tell you which ones work the best, whether you are an expat, a traveler, a Vietnamese, or even someone who's never been in the country.

Should You Pay for A Dating Site?
All the websites mentioned below are free, but you generally have to pay to access special features.

If you are new to Vietnam or if you are only staying for a few days, I strongly recommend you to pay as it will allow you to get matches much faster. It is also the best way to talk to the prettiest and most interesting girls on those sites.

For instance, with Vietnam Cupid, the free version limits you to chat with girls you've matched with. By becoming a member, you can instead send a message to whoever you want on the site, even girls who haven't seen your profile yet.

VietnamCupid.com (For Guys 30+ Living Outside Vietnam)
Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
On most dating sites, girls are often reluctant to meet with guys who are not living in Vietnam. They will think that they are only looking for one-night stands, and not ready to commit.

On VietnamCupid, things are a bit different. There, the majority of male users are foreigners living abroad. So girls on the site are not surprised if you tell them you are based in the US, and they won't mind chatting with you.

If you are planning a trip to Vietnam in the next few weeks, VietnamCupid would be my first recommendation.

The website has a LOT of active female profiles. Usually, there are at least a thousand girls online at the same time, but the number can reach 2,000. On the other side, there aren't that many males, so it is quite easy to get a reply to your messages.

I also notice that Vietnamese girls there do not mind a large age difference. Even if you are above 40, you can still find someone in her 20s willing to be your girlfriend.

You can sign up to Vietnam Cupid for free, then upgrade to a paying account if you see some interesting profiles. The prices start at 9$ for a yearly plan or 25$ for a monthly plan.

Pros:
➝ Between 1000-2000 online Vietnamese girls
➝ High ratio of girls to guys
➝ You can search for girls elsewhere in Asia or in the World (Very useful if you travel around)
➝ A large diversity of girls who can usually speak English
➝ Foreigner friendly
➝ Detailed profiles make it less superficial compared with Tinder

Cons:
➝ Without paying, you can only chat with girls you've matched with
➝ Only desktop site

OkCupid
OkCupid is the second website I used the most in Vietnam. I was generally matching with plenty of girls there, even though after a few days there were very few new profiles.

What I liked was that all my matches were normal girls (not prostitutes or scams) with a day job and a fair level of English. They were a bit older than on VietnamCupid, though. Very few initiated a conversation, and when I told them I didn't live in Vietnam, they would lose interest.

Another advantage of OkCupid is that you can change your location pretty easily in the settings, and this feature is free (at least for now). This is quite useful if you are traveling.

OkCupid is probably one of the most detailed dating apps available in Vietnam. You can write a lengthy profile, add tons of information about yourself, and if you are looking for someone very specific, you will be able to filter your search precisely. This can be interesting for those who have a non-binary gender identity.

Finally, what I like also is that you can answer hundreds of different questions about your personality, and how someone else answered those questions. This will give you you match percentage that can be a good indicator of your compatibility with that person.

Pros:
➝ Mostly free
➝ Both an app and a website
➝ Possibility to be very detailed in your description
➝ Excellent search function, ideal for people with specific taste
➝ You can predict your compatibility with someone using the "match percentage"

Cons:
➝ You can only swipe a limited number of profiles per day

Bumble (For upper-class girls)
Bumble is one of my favorite dating apps because girls have to message the guys first. That saves me from having to find a pickup line other than my usual "Hi, how are you". Another feature is that you need to reply within 24 hours, otherwise the match disappears.

Girls on Bumble are generally the most educated. In particular, you have a lot of Vietnamese girls who have studied abroad in the US, the UK, or Australia. This is also the app with the most foreign girls.

They tend to be demanding, though, and many will not be interested if you are just a traveler.

Pros:
➝ Many upper-class girls with good education
➝ Many foreign girls
➝ Girls have to send the first message

Cons:
➝ You can only chat with girls who contacted you
➝ Not too many profiles available

Seeking.com (Sugar Daddy/Sugar Baby)
If you are wealthy and you are looking for a really hot/smart girlfriend, SeekingArrangement is a great option. As the leading sugar daddy/sugar baby website in the world, it has a large selection of sexy Vietnamese girls who want a relationship with a rich guy.

Pros:
➝ Very pretty and hot girls that are easy to date (if you are willing to sponsor them)
➝ High reply rate to messages
➝ Works well even if you are traveling to Vietnam for a short time
➝ Straight-forward, you know what to expect from the beginning

Cons:
➝ Expensive

Tinder (Disappointing if you don't pay)
There are now so many guys using Tinder that I don't recommend it for Vietnam. 5 years ago, I would get on average 20-30 matches a day (out of 50 possible likes), while today I'm happy if I get 5-10.

I'm not 100% sure I can explain this change. Maybe I got older. Or maybe there are too many guys who boost their profiles. This feature costs about 3-4$, and it makes a profile appear more frequently within an area for about 20 minutes. Unfortunately, this means the profiles of those not using a boost will appear less frequently.

I would be happy to pay, but I see that girls can be quite slow to reply to messages, and when they do, they rarely engage in a meaningful conversation.

Pros:
➝ A large number of users
➝ Free to message girls you've matched with
➝ Easy to use
➝ Interesting paying feature but expensive: To upgrade to a Gold profile and buy a few boosts, you'll easily need 35$ per month.

Cons:
➝ No hookup culture in Vietnam
➝ Impossible to see which girls are online
➝ You need to match with a girl before talking to her
➝ You cannot like more than 50 girls per day (or you must pay)
➝ Girls on Tinder generally want a guy who lives in Vietnam: Not an app for tourists.
➝ Low response rate or low-quality discussions (many girls are just looking for Instagram followers)

You can also read my article: 10 Reasons You Are Failing at Tinder
If you are only looking for sex (and preferably with open-minded girls), Adult Friend Finder is the best website around. It targets libertine men and women who are into casual hook-up, partner swapping, BDSM, cuckolding, swinging, orgies, etc.

There are naturally much more guys than girls on the website. Yet, one of my best friends uses it and he successfully met a fair number of girls. It also works very well if you are a couple looking for other couples.

Note that the website might be blocked by the government. In that case, you'll need to download a VPN to access it. If you don't know which one to choose, I've recommended a few here: Best VPNs to Unblock Websites.

Pros:
➝ Number 1 site for finding sex partners
➝ A high number of members all over the world
The free version lets you see the profiles of other members

Cons:
➝ 10/1 guys to girls ratio
➝ Expensive

Skout is a bit like OkCupid, except with more ads and a poorer design. If you don't mind it, the main draw of this website is that it is free to message whoever you want.

Pros:
➝ Mostly free
➝ Both an app and a website
➝ A good number of matches

Cons:
➝ A limited number of girls online
➝ Confusing design and functionality
➝ Many prostitutes and fakes
➝ Many issues with the website: Photos not loading, impossible to change the location

Badoo
Badoo used to be great: It was free with plenty of girls from all backgrounds. Nowadays, I don't use it often as I rarely match with anyone. I suspect that there are too many guys who are paying for premium features ("Get Shown More", "Rise Up to First Place", "Get Featured", etc) so that as a free user, your profile remains invisible. There are also way too many prostitutes and fake profiles.

Pros:
➝ Lots of girls online
➝ Fun, colorful website interface with large photos (but also slower to load)
➝ Both a website and an app with geo-localization
➝ You can send messages to 5 girls per day for free and you "like" as many as you want
➝ Cheaper than other websites

Cons:
➝ Too many fake accounts, scams, and prostitutes
➝ English proficiency of girls is average
➝ Too much competition from other guys => Low reply rate and match rate

Udon Thani Nightlife - Best Nightclubs and Bars (Updated 2021)

Udon Thani is located in the North of Thailand (Isaan Region), near the border with Laos. Even though it is the 4th most populous city in the country (150,000 people), it is very laid-back and provincial.

I was there for 5 days as a stopover before heading to Laos and I was not really expecting there would be any nightlife.

As it turns out, I was wrong. You can find bars and nightclubs that are open and busy every night, but for that, you'll need to go outside of the tourist areas.

This short review will guide you through the best venues I went to during my stay. If you think I forgot one, please leave me a note in the comment section below.

Partying Alone?
If you want to meet someone when visiting Udon Thai, you can check dating apps like Bumble, OkCupid, or Tinder. They work very well if you are young and living in Thailand.

The website ThaiCupid is also a good option because most of its users are interested in meeting with foreigners, even, if they are staying abroad. It is free to join and browse profiles.

Lately, another website is gaining popularity in Thailand. Seeking.com is more controversial because it focuses on sugar dating (basically dating with benefits). Still, it has so many members that it is worth mentioning here.

Best Hotels Near Udon Thani Nightlife
Hotels in Udon Thani are really cheap, even during the high season. I was staying in Centara, a 4-star property with a perfect location next to a large mall, and I was paying only 45$!

If you want to be close to the expat bars, an excellent hotel is The Pannarai (4-star, 42$/night). A cheaper option nearby is the Prajaktra (20$/night).

You can check Agoda for more options, just remember to stay close to the Central Plaza Mall.

Party in Rhythm Club
The nightlife for foreigners in Udon Thani is very easy to find. Basically, you have two adjacent streets with a total of around 30 bars (some with ladies, some normal).

Note that the expats in Udon Thani are quite old on average and that they sleep early! You should go out before 10PM otherwise all bars will be empty. In fact, many are already closed by midnight.

The first street you can try is Soi Samphan Thamit, just behind Central Plaza Mall. Most bars there are not very sophisticated and they only have the basics for you to enjoy a beer. They may also have hostesses to keep you company.

Some of the popular venues are Sports Bar (the most crowded), Vikings Corner Bar, Zaaps, Tiffy, the Meeting Point, the Irish Clock (an Irish pub and hotel), Fun Bar and Shadow. They are often owned by a foreigner married to a Thai woman.

There is also a tiny beer bar complex called Day & Night, just next to the Pannarai Hotel.
The second street is Soi Prajak Sillapacom, at the end of Soi Samphan Thamit. The bars are a little bit nicer there, especially Sisters (but unfortunately it does not get so busy).

The main attraction in Prajak Sillapacom is a beer bar complex called Nutty Park, which is similar to Day and Night. You'll see quite a lot of old guys, especially in the restaurant/pub the Good Corner (it seems to be a hub for the expat community).

Thai Nightclubs, Bars and Cafés
The bars mentioned above are just OK for a few beers or to meet people, but they are not really happening. By the time of your second day in Udon Thani, you'll certainly be bored.

Thais nightclubs are a much better option. They have the advantage of staying open later (maximum 2AM) and they have a younger crowd.

My most recommended venues are the following:

Rhythm (in Napalai Hotel)
Rhythm was my favorite club even though it is located more than 4 kilometers from the city center (100-120THB with a tuk-tuk). It is made of one large room, quite modern, with a live stage where bands play Thai rock/pop. I went there on a Sunday and it was full, with many girls in their 20s. When the band is not playing, the DJs mix EDM songs.

Free entrance on weekdays (200THB on weekends if there is an event). Close at 2AM.

Full review: Rhythm Udon Thani or Facebook: Rhythm.

Phoenix
Phoenix is also a fun nightclub and it is within walking distance from Central Plaza. It is the newest and hippest in the city, but smaller than Rhythm. They have great sound/lighting, an intimate atmosphere, an upmarket crowd and excellent rock bands.

Free entrance every day of the week. Close at 2AM.

Full review: Phoenix Udon Thani or Facebook: Phoenix

Tawan Daeng
Tawan Daeng is an institution in Udon Thani. It is located 2 minutes from the tourist area of Soi Samphan Thamit (behind Central Plaza) and for this reason, you'll see plenty of foreigners inside. They have live bands (playing folk/country songs from Isaan region) and also some more random shows (comedians, dancing, etc). You can go there early for dinner and try some Isaan food.

Website: Tawan Daeng Udon Thani

Kongsiam Café
This laid-back, cool café is located next to Phoenix Club. They have live music every night, with bands who sing in English or in Thai (mostly covers of famous songs). The design and set-up is really original. It is my most recommended venue for a date.

Facebook: Kongsiam Udon Thani

Bar'ista Brasserie
In front of UD Town Mall and the train station, this is a popular restaurant with an indoor and an outdoor area. It gets full almost every night with upper-class locals. They have Thai music, usually pop and mellow songs.

Fable Nightclub (Jakarta)

Perfectly located in the center of the city and with an underground vibe, Fable is one of the most famous nightclubs in Jakarta. It is part of the group All In, which also manages Mirror Club in Bali.

The best thing about Fable is that it is part of a nightlife complex called Fairgrounds (known previously as "Bengkel"). There, you have several popular bars and clubs such as Lucy in the Sky, The Swillhouse, and The Pallas so it's easy to switch from one place to the other. If you are a newcomer to Jakarta, I would really advise going there for your first night out as you are certain to meet new people and have fun.

Fable itself is popular with younger Indonesians in their early 20s (or even younger) and some foreigners. It is usually full during the weekend but quieter on weekdays unless there is a special event.

There is an entrance fee on weekends only (around IDR 150k) that includes one free drink. Beware that the security will refuse anyone who is wearing shorts, sandals, or torn jeans. Women are also expected to wear heels.

The place is quite large, with several intimate spaces to sit down and a rather mid-size dancefloor. On the ceiling, you have large glass panels that allow you to see the sky as well as some skyscrapers.

Each night, the music will be different: EDM, RnB, Top 40, Oldies. Generally speaking, it's almost always mainstream music.

Best Clubs to Meet Indonesian Girls in Jakarta (2021 Update)

This article was last updated on May 2021. Please note that due to COVID-19, Dragonfly, Colosseum, and Blowfish are currently closed. The other ones are still open but closing early (around 1 AM).

Going to nightclubs or bars is one of the best ways to meet Indonesian girls in Jakarta.

It is a bit more challenging than online dating because you need to know what are the best venues and the best days to be successful. You must also be careful to differentiate between the "normal" girls, the prostitutes, and the professional girlfriends (sugar babies). The latter category includes all the ladies who make a living from having one or several boyfriends. Depending on what you are looking for, they can be either a great target or something to avoid.

Don't like Meeting Girls from Nightclubs? Read 10 Best Dating Sites and Apps in Indonesia.

Tips for Meeting Girls in Clubs in Jakarta

When to Party?
Wednesday is the absolute best day for partying in Jakarta. It is cheaper, less crowded, and many nightclubs have a ladies' night. This means the percentage of "good" girls will be higher than usual. Also, you have less competition from other guys, as there are fewer of those tourists/travelers who come for the weekend from Singapore/Kuala Lumpur looking for a one-night-stand.

Book a Table/Sofa
If possible, always reserve a table or a sofa. You generally have to spend a minimum of IDR4-7 Million to get a table for 6-10 people, in a VIP corner, preferably near the DJ or near the dancefloor. That's about 3 bottles of spirits + the mixers. If you are with 4 or 5 friends, that's not more expensive than paying an entrance fee and buying several drinks separately. If you are alone or with just a couple of friends, ask the waiter if you can keep the unused bottles for another night.

IndonesianCupid (Advertising)
Meeting girls while partying in Jakarta is not difficult as long as you are young, good-looking, and confident. For the rest of us, I recommend making some contacts online before going out.

IndonesianCupid works well because the majority of girls there are looking to meet foreigners. Unlike on Tinder, many will not care if you live in Indonesia or not. And unlike in SeekingArrangement, they won't ask you for money.

For this reason, you can start chatting with them even before you arrive in Indonesia and set up a few dates while you are still in your home country.

It is free to register and to look at all the girls' profiles. If you match with them, it's also free to chat.

Best Clubs for Meeting Girls in Jakarta

I'm ranking below the 10 nightclubs where you have the most chance of meeting girls in Jakarta.

You can click on the name of each one for a complete review:

Basque
Without any doubt, this is the most popular party sport for foreigners in Jakarta as of today. It is a Spanish restaurant by day, specializing in cuisine from the Basque region, and it transforms into a bar/club after midnight. There is nothing incredible about it, but it is spacious, with several distinct areas: A long circular bar, a dining room, a lounge, and a small dancefloor that gets packed on weekends.

During the week, it is much quieter except on Wednesday. There are a few other bars in the same building, Moonshine, and J. Sparrow which are both worth a look. Loewy is also within walking distance from here.

The crowd in Basque is an odd mix. Most guys are foreigners, either expats or tourists. Among the girls, many are students or professionals, but there are also probably around 25%-50% that are either prostitutes or sugar babies (the kind you would meet on SeekingArrangement).

This is also a large venue, similar to Basque but with a more Indonesian and upper-class crowd. They usually have live music or DJs playing Top 40 songs.

Opened in 2006, Dragonfly is probably the most famous nightclub in Jakarta and it still attracts a beautiful crowd of socialites, celebrities, expats, and wealthy Indonesians. Many girls visit the club hoping to find a foreign guy, preferably a rich one. This is why Dragonfly has a bad reputation among some people as it is considered a club for "ayam" or "gold-diggers". It is a rather expensive place to party, with an entrance fee of IDR300,000 without any drinks.

Located in Kemang, this iconic bar is a meeting point for foreigners in South Jakarta. I'm not a big fan of it personally, but it is always crowded and it is great to meet new people. Something remarkable about it is that there are clients of any age, from young interns who just landed in the city to retired expats who have spent 30 years in Indonesia. There is also a fair number of girls, most of whom are looking for serious relationships.

The bar has several areas including a sports bar and an indoor beer garden for live music events.

This restaurant and bar is still a popular joint for picking up girls, more than 10 years after it opened. This is a great place to start a night out as it is centrally located in the nightlife area of Mega Kuningan, and the food they serve is actually good. There is usually some action near the bar area, where you can easily talk to other customers.

Fable is part of the Fairgrounds complex, next to Lucy in the Sky, The Pallas, and Swillhouse. All these venues get really busy on weekends with hip Indonesians in their 20s. They tend to hang out in closed groups, though, but with a little effort, you should be able to make some friends.

Nu ChinaDronk and Second Floor (Kemang)
These 3 nightclubs/bars are all located in Kemang and they are popular with a younger crowd (sometimes under 21). They are cheap but the alcohol they serve is probably not genuine.

This smokey bar has live music every night. It is not very popular with foreigners, so you'll stand out in the crowd if you go there. The downside is that you'll have to hear a lot of cheesy Indonesian pop songs.

CJ's and BATS
Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
CJ's Bar
These two infamous hotel bars are located in the Mulia hotel and the Shangri-La hotel respectively. You can easily meet women there, but you'll probably have to pay since the majority of them are prostitutes. The male customers are typically either expats or foreign businessmen, usually above 40. CJs and BATS are also the best bars in Jakarta to listen to live music (covers of Top 40 songs).

This nightclub belongs to the Ismaya Group, also behind Dragonfly. It has a younger crowd, mostly Indonesian Chinese, and from the upper class.

Best Bars in Jakarta (2021 Covid Update)

This is my updated ranking of the best bars in Jakarta (2021).

Because of COVID-19, many venues have closed down, permanently or temporarily, but the majority of them are still open. Even better, I have added quite a few names here such as Caspar, Chao Chao, Holywings, and Black Pond Tavern. I'm sure there are plenty more that I forgot so don't hesitate to drop me a message/comment with your recommendations.

Currently, the top bars in Jakarta are:

Basque is not the most impressive or the most beautiful bar in Jakarta, but it is the most happening at the moment.

This is especially true on Friday and Saturday when the dancefloor gets so packed you can barely move a finger. On those days, there is a first-drink-charge of about IDR200,000 if you come after midnight.

Many customers are foreigners, either expats or tourists, and there are also a fair amount of Indonesian girls. Many are just office girls who want to have fun, but there are some "professional girlfriends" as well (the kind you would meet on the dating site Seeking.com).

The music is usually a mix of famous pop, rock and hip-hop songs.

On weekdays, from Sunday to Thursday, it is much quieter. Then, the focus is on the restaurant, which serves Spanish food from the Basque region, and Tapas. It's still fine for a drink, but don't expect a party vibe.

Instagram: Basque

Opened in early 2017, Léon is a serious competitor to Basque, but it attracts mostly rich Indonesians instead of foreigners. It actually consists of two venues:
- The main one: A massive square room with a high ceiling, a long bar and a garden, is open to anyone (as long as you dress properly)
- The second one, smaller, is a member-only speakeasy.

To enjoy Léon, it is much better to book a table ahead and to buy a few bottles.

Instagram: Léon

Henshin
This rooftop bar on top of the Westin Hotel is one of the most expensive in the city, but also one of the most classy. Superb atmosphere and view, with a fantastic service. Not too crowded, probably because of the price.

Instagram: Henshin

The most famous rooftop in Jakarta. The view is not as good as in Cloud but the atmosphere is less "corporate/expat" and more relaxed. A must for tourists. Strict dress code in evenings: No shorts.

Instagram: SKYE

Lucy in the Sky
Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
Lucy in the Sky started as a laid-back, unpretentious open-air café. Today it is a hip bar, rather expensive, attracting all the cool kids in the capital. Recommended if you are 20-25 years old hipster. Entrance fee of IDR150,000 on weekends.

Instagram: Lucy in The Sky

Walking distance from Basque, Loewy has lost some of its customers in the past year. It is still happening though, and a great place to eat casual French food and to hang out any day of the week. If you are alone in Jakarta, the bar area is an easy place to socialize, especially with foreigners living in Mega Kuningan.

Instagram: Loewy

Caspar (Sudirman)
This Spanish restaurant is great for having a drink. It has a whisky and cigar bar in its mezzanine, as well as a garden. Late in the evening, on weekends, it turns into a club with a DJ and a packed dancefoor.

Instagram: Caspar

Slowly becoming one of the oldest bars in Jakarta, EP is a hangout for the expat crowd in Kemang. Very large with several rooms (restaurant, sports bar, pool tables, beer garden with live music), it manages to be busy every night.

From the same group, you can also check their sister properties, all part of the Bugil's Group: Cazbar (Mega Kuningan), Double Doors (Puri Indah), De Hooi (Pondok Indah), and De Burse (SCBD).

Website: Bugils Group

Black Pond Tavern
This Deep South-themed bar is located inside a wooden cabin in the Maj (Senayan Golf Club). Quite unexpected for Jakarta and worth trying for those looking to experience something different.

Chao Chao
This rooftop bar on top of the Alila Hotel SCBD replaced Hakkasan after it closed in 2020. It is an expensive place with only a tiny bar area. Most customers are required to book sofas (2,5M of minimum spend for 4 people). The view is ok but not exceptional. Good electronic music.

Some people prefer BATS, some people prefer CJs. Both are quite similar if not identical: They are 5-star hotel bars with imported live bands and a crowd of husbands having fun away from home. Recommended for older visitors/businessmen who not too comfortable exploring the city. Both are very pricey. Beware as they both have many working girls inside.

Social House
The restaurant and bar Social House is not a really exceptional place, but it has such a strategic location within Grand Indonesia that I often end up there by convenience. Average food but a wide selection of drinks and wine. It is normally crowded every day. Nice view of Bunderan Hotel Indonesia.

Cork & Screw
There are 3 Cork & Screw in Jakarta, but the only one I've been to recently is the Pacific Place's branch. This wine lounge and restaurant is possibly the busiest nightlife spot in the whole mall, even more than Hard Rock Café. Most customers are wealthy Indonesian-Chinese in large groups. You can also buy wine bottles.

Facebook: Cork & Screw

Also a restaurant/café, Union is very popular with a diverse crowd, from office workers to socialites. Recommended for after-work drinks or for first-time dates (easy to find). It's better to make advance reservation as it is often full.

There are now several locations in Jakarta apart from the original branch in Senayan: In PIK Avenue, in Pondok Indah Mall and in Mall Kelapa Gading 3.

The New Holywings Dragon Club in PIK
This is a chain of bars and clubs that you can now find everywhere in Jakarta: PIK, Epicentrum, Mega Kuningan, Kemang, Senopati, Kelapa Gaging, Senayan, etc. The full list is available here.

I don't really understand what makes them so popular. The ones I've been to were messy, with appalling service, and not even so cheap. They had average live bands (singing mostly Indonesian songs), and the air was so full of smoke that it was unbreathable.

The crowd is mostly Indonesian, middle to upper class, and young. Not many foreigners.

Camden is very popular and busy almost any day of the week. They have an outside beer garden and an indoor area. Cheap prices, perfect for students or backpackers.

Beer Hall (SCBD)
This is not my favorite bar, but I often go there because it is almost always busy. Part of the Beer Garden group, it is a bit more upmarket and more expensive. Daily live bands play a mix of Indonesian and International songs. The crowd is mostly local.

Instagram: Beerhall

Discreet but sleek lounge with large bay windows overlooking the Mega Kuningan roundabout. Popular with girls more than guys. Not too crowded but fine for chilling. DJs or live music from Wednesday to Saturday.

Instagram: Flow

McGettigans
This expat bar is part of the famous International chain of Irish bars of the same name (they also have branches in Singapore, Dubai, New York, etc). Modern, with affordable food and drinks, perfect for watching sports.

J. Sparrows is a busy bar and grill in the basement of Noble House building (the same as Basque). Nice interior design (1930s Art Deco). I recommend it for a date.

Facebook: J. Sparrow

Located in Senopati, Pao Pao is a narrow restaurant (serving dim-sun) and bar (mostly whiskeys and rums). 1930's Shanghai interior design with a dim red light atmosphere. It is usually quite full with Indonesian customers.

Recently renovated, Safehouse is a small bar/club/restaurant catering to a small community of trendy expats and upper-class Indonesians. It used to focus on electronic music, but now they have more eclectic events (hip-hop, old school, new wave, etc). Also serves healthy food.

Instagram: The Safehouse

Paulaner Brauhaus
The famous chain of German restaurant is just above Social House in Grand Indonesia Mall. Live music every night and the famous Paulaner beer on tap.

Website: Paulaner Brauhaus

Bluegrass
Popular steakhouse with a long bar. Quite many foreigners as it is centrally located near Epicentrum mall.

Instagram: Bluegrass

Beer Garden
A group of affordable beer gardens with 3 locations in Jakarta: Radio Dalam, Kemang and SCBD. Usually, they are happening every night.

Because of COVID-19, the branches in Radio Dalam and Kemang are now closed.

Queen's Head
One of the best venues in Kemang to have drinks. Beautiful design, delicious food and an interesting crowd.

Facebook: Queen's Head

Liquid Exchange
The closest bar from the Taman Rasuna apartment complex (at least 18 towers), it is generally busy all week long. Indoor and outdoor area. Nothing special but good enough for an affordable drink while watching sports or listening to live music. Same owner as the expat bar Aphrodite (200 meters away).

Instagram: Liquid Exchange

From the same owner behind Camden, this is another student bar with very cheap prices (IDR25,000 for a beer during happy hour from 5 PM to 8 PM). Cheerful, yet messy, atmosphere. Located in Gandaria.

Instagram: Halfway (they also have a branch in Puri Indah now).

The Hard Rock Café in Jakarta is just outside the mall Pacific Place, 50 meters from the main entrance. It looks modern and it is spacious, with a large stage for bands to perform. Not as packed as the Balinese branch, especially during weekdays, and a bit touristy (popular with out-of-town Indonesians).

Instagram: Hard Rock Café

If you are in PIK, Mixology is one of most happening bars in the area. It serves Soju, which is popular among the young Indo-Chinese community in Jakarta. Not suitable if you come alone, bring at least a friend.

Instagram: Mixology

Melly's Garden
This giant beer garden in Menteng (walking distance from Jalan Jaksa) is an all-time favorite of middle-class Indonesians, young or not, who enjoy the daily live music and the cheap prices. Number one bar for backpackers in Jakarta.

Instagram: Melly's Garden

Greyhound
Part of the Arena group (Seribu Rasa, Penang Bistro, Hacienda), Greyhound is a fusion Thai/Western café centrally located in Grand Indonesia. During daytime, it is a perfect hangout spot to meet friends while in the evening, it is more like a stylish lounge, ideal for a date.

They now also have a branch in Gunawarman.

Cloud Lounge (Currently closed)

Another rooftop near SKYE in the Plaza Building (Plaza Indonesia). It is conveniently located in the heart of the city and it offers fantastic views of Jakarta by day or by night. Below Cloud, you'll find some chic but expensive restaurants (Gaia, Salt Grill, etc). It used to be my favorite bar but it has become a bit touristy and their prices have jumped 30% last year.

Prohibition (Temporarily Closed)
The original 1930s' speakeasy bar in Jakarta. It has a secret entrance leading to an intimate bar with live jazz every night. Great atmosphere.

Instagram: Prohibition Jakarta

The Dutch (Temporarily Closed)
Owned by the same people behind Union, The Dutch is a restaurant specializing in cold cuts and sausages. After 10 PM, the music gets louder and you start to see a crowd of drinkers at the bar. Live music on Friday.

Instagram: The Dutch

Underground speakeasy bar with a hipster theme (if that's a thing). Young, artsy crowd. Busy only when they have events.

Website: Lola

Proof (Temporarily Closed)
Another elite speakeasy bar with live music and a hidden entrance. Next to the Senayan Golf Course.

Instagram: Proof

Aphrodite (Temporarily Closed)
An expat bar near Taman Rasuna. Dozens of TV screens on which you can catch any sporting events. Pool tables. Good value Western food.

Facebook: Aphrodite

Vin + (Temporarily Closed)
A group of wine lounges with four locations in Kemang, Senayan, Central Park and Pondok Indah. It never gets crazy but it is fine for sharing a few bottles of wine with a group of friends.

Instagram: Vin +

Motion Blue (Closed Temporarily)
Jazz bar featuring different artists every week. Entrance fee around IDR150,000 inclusive of one drink. Check their Facebook for the updated event schedule.

Facebook: Motion Blue

Burgundy (Temporarily Closed)
Burgundy bar in the Hyatt Hotel (Plaza Indonesia) is generally quiet, but I really enjoy it simply to look at the view of Thamrin/Sudirman. Live low-key music.

Website: Burgundy

Parc 19 (Temporarily closed)
Same owner as Léon, Parc19 is a restaurant and bar in Kemang with live music or DJs depending on the day of the week. I find it expensive.
