Taco Beach Mexican Food Bali

$

Taco Beach is a popular, warung-like Mexican restaurant located on Jalan Kunti in Seminyak, near Rolling Fork. It is very small and almost always crowded. They cater mostly to expats or people familiar with Bali, serving good value-for-money food in a fun atmosphere. They were once the number one restaurant in Seminyak on Trip Advisor.

Their menu has all Mexican food classics, and also some more original fusion dishes, made using typical recipes from Indonesia. I had their famous Babi Guling Tacos (Grilled Pork Balinese Style), which I enjoyed without being too impressed. It was only 5US$ so I wasn't expecting more anyway.
Babi Guling Tacos
Overall: Taco Beach is a good place to have inexpensive Mexican food in Bali, among others (Taco Casa, Taco Local, Motel Mexicola, La Calaca). If you go for dinner, you may not get the best service (or you may not even get a table) as it is packed. It is better during the day when the waiters have more time and you don't feel rushed to finish your food.

Portabella Restaurant (Hotel Fontana Bali)

Portabella is the restaurant located inside Fontana hotel in Bali. In the same location, there is also the 24/7 Sunny Café which I didn't try.

I visited Portabella because I was attracted by its design and appearance. I was hoping that it would be the sign of good, authentic Italian food. I was also told the Chef was Italian.

Unfortunately I was wrong. The food I tried was really average, the kind you would expect to eat in a food court inside a mall. The service was friendly but the waiters seemed confused about my requests.
The complimentary bread was the best part of my meal
Beef Carpaccio (70,000rp + 21% tax and service charge)
Pizza Capricciosa (79,000rp + 21% tax and service)
At last, the place was totally deserted so it didn't give me a very positive impression.

Overall: Portabella has a good look but in terms of food, it is nothing else but the restaurant of a 4-star hotel. I would only recommend it if you are guests of the hotel and if you are lazy to go somewhere else. I don't think that I will go back.

Sun Shoot Café (Seminyak)

Sun Shoot is a neighborhood restaurant/café popular with expats living in the Kerobokan area in Bali. It serves a long list of Western and Asian dishes that I found excellent for their prices. It is owned by an Australian guy who is also behind the nearby Tukit Villas. The service is quite good for such a small place: They even bring you cold towels on arrival.

Sun Shoot is always full on weekend nights. They have live music from time to time, and they also have a large screen TV to broadcast the most important sporting events.

Overall: Recommended for breakfast/lunch/dinner or for hanging out if you live nearby.

La Sal Spanish Restaurant (Bali)

La Sal is a Spanish restaurant located on Jalan Drupadi, in Seminyak, Bali. It is owned by two men from Spain/Argentina: Lino De Zordo in the kitchen and Gonzalo Sanchez to manage the operations. You should have a good chance to see them around talking to customers.

The restaurant is rather large, partially in the open-air, with a bar area in the corner inside. There is nothing really special about the design but it is neat. It would be nicer if it was smaller I think, with less tables. The current look is similar to a canteen, with the same tables lining up one after another.

La Sal serves Tapas and South American-style meat grilled on the barbecue they have in the garden. I had several Tapas and a soup. The Mushrooms, the Boiled Octopus and the Gazpacho were very good, but the Lamb Skewers were quite hard to chew. The prices are on the higher end: A full meal should cost you around Rp300,000-Rp500,000 without wine. I thought it was a bit too much considering my overall experience.
Overall: I enjoyed La Sal but I found it too expensive, probably targeting tourists more than expats. I would recommend it only for Spanish food lovers who are on a loose budget. The general atmosphere of the restaurant is lacking a more original design to make it a recommended venue for dates/romantic dinners. The service was excellent though, on the level with other semi-fine dining restaurants in Bali.

Sundara Beach Club (Four Seasons Jimbaran)

$

Sundara, the beach club attached to the Four Seasons Hotel in Jimbaran, opened in 2013 with the ambition of becoming the Ku De Ta of Southern Bali. They built it on the ruins of JPs, the previous beach restaurant of the hotel.

The owners spared no expenses to reach this objective. The designer team, also behind the Rock Bar in Ayana did a truly great job. Sundara is one of the best-looking restaurants I have seen in Bali. It is fancy and luxurious, but not too pretentious. It has an outside area with a long swimming pool, and an air-con area with a bar and comfortable leather sofas. You will get a nice view on Jimbaran beach, especially at sunset time.

Before the opening, they brought in an army of foreign consultants for cocktails, wines, food, etc... Even now, they still have at least 3 foreigners to manage it: The Director of Operations, the Chef, and the Sommelier.

The service is impressive. You are taken care of by friendly hostesses from the moment you step in. Once you sit, just move an arm for a second and a waiter will come to you. Everyone calls you by name and you get some canapés every once in a while.

The menu (see below) features rather expensive food and drinks. A standard cocktail costs around 220,000rp net and for food, you will need between Rp300,000 and Rp500,000 for a two-course meal. The good deal is to go to Sundara during their happy hours, everyday from 5pm to 7pm, when you have a Buy 1 Get 1 promotion. Their Sunday Brunch is also an interesting option at Rp350,000 (+21% tax and service).

I only tried the cocktails and the free food they were passing around. I didn't fall off my chair trying them, so I'm glad I didn't spend more money for a whole meal. You have some much cheaper options nearby, particularly Jimbaran Beach Club.

Overall: I will definitely try Sundara again, but only during Happy Hours when their prices become affordable. If you have money to spend and if you stay around Jimbaran, then I recommend it to you with no hesitation for the atmosphere, design and service.

Note that as the beach club is part of the Four Seasons Hotel, non-guests do not have access to the same facilities, in particular regarding the use of day beds.

Yeyo Lobby & Eatery is a trendy restaurant in Senopati, located just above Colette & Lola. During the day, it is a bit sleepy and not so happening. On the weekend nights, it turns into a great place to have a drink and to dance as well. They often have good DJs and the restaurant quickly becomes a dance floor around 11pm.

Overall: Yeyo is one of my favorite places in this area. Good crowd and good music on weekends. It is not the best for eating though.

There used to be a terrace on the second floor, but it closed unfortunaly, making Yeyo quite smokey when there is a party. I hope they open it again...

Kebun Zibiru Cucina Italiana (Bali)

Kebun Ziburu is an Italian restaurant owned by a young Italian man, Luigi Calcagno. It is located on Jalan Drupadi in Seminyak, inside a small house with a garden (kebun in Indonesian). I went there on an evening when they had a live Jazz event so it gave me an excellent first impression.

The young Italian manager, Mauro Piludu welcomed me personally before taking my food order, which was even nicer.

All this gave me high expectations for the food, which did not seem too expensive at first. I had a 3-course meal with Carpaccio di Filetto di Vitella (Rp75,000++), the Zibiru Salad (Rp77,000++) and the Tarte aux Pommes (Apple Tart, Rp42,000++).
Carpaccio
Apple Tart
From reading on the menu, the food description was appetizing but I must admit I was a bit disappointed with the actual taste. I thought my salad was too simple for the price, even though the ingredients were good. Maybe I should have ordered a more complicated dish. The Apple Tart was not very good, especially the dough. Only the juice and the carpaccio made me satisfied.

The idea behind Kebun Zibiru is to bring food directly from the farm to the restaurant. It sounds good in terms of marketing, but it is the case of most restaurants in Bali as it keeps the costs low. They also do their own bread and pasta.
Overall: I recommend you to try Zibiru for the personalized attention, the relax garden area, and their weekly Jazz events. Regarding the food, I have the feeling that I was unlucky and that I should probably give them a second change. From what I tried, the food was average and a bit expensive.

It is suitable for a date/romantic dinner, but there was not a lot of wind and it feel a bit hot. I got a few mosquito bites too.

The Harvest Cakes & Pastries (Indonesia)

$

The Harvest must be the most widely-spread high-end bakery shops chain in Indonesia. They produce a whole range of pastries, cookies, breads and gift boxes, targeting mostly the middle-to-high class Indonesians. They are part of Mount Scopus group from Australian national Lal De Silva, who also owns several F&B venues in Jakarta, particularly Balboni, Negev and Chateau Blanc.

I had tried their products on different occasions and my opinion about them changed over time. A few years ago, they were mostly about marketing and packaging. None of the food I tried with them was better than average.

And then, I tried again last week their new Bali branch on Jalan Sunset Road in Kuta. I was really impressed there: The service was very attentive and professional. The menu and displays were attractive, with a profusion of choice (and even a full Western/Asian menu). The various pastries I tried were similar to what you could buy in Paris in terms of taste. At last, a real attention was paid to the design and atmosphere of the place. Unsurprisingly, this Harvest shop is very crowded and they are planning more openings this year in Bali.

Since the competition is getting tougher on the higher end bakeries (particularly with the recent openings of Paul and Eric Kayser), I imagine that they needed to step up their game to stay competitive and the result is excellent.
Overall: I will go back to Harvest, hoping that each of their branches has the same standards as the one I visited in Kuta lately.

Café Seminyak & La Boulangerie de Bali

Café Seminyak is a popular restaurant on Jalan Raya Seminyak, strategically located next to Bintang supermarket. It also has a bakery/pastry shop called "La Boulangerie de Bali".

My first impression of the café was not good. The staff was overwhelmed and it seemed there was no management inside. It was hard to get attention from the waitresses who were quite disorganized and not particularly friendly. I first ordered a Ricotta Salad, but I was told 5 minutes later there were no tomatoes left. I then asked for a Merguez Sandwich, and again 3 minutes later I was told there was no more baguette. Finally, I went for the Crepes Ham Cheese Mushroom and they were able to do it!
Ham Cheese Mushroom Crêpe (Rp49,000+15% tax and service)
In spite of this, I can understand the reasons behind the success of Café Seminyak. The menu is complete: They have French, Australian, American, Thai, Indian, Indian food and a long list of desserts, including home-made ice creams (see menu below).

The setting is a bit dirty and old but it is decorated with funny posters and it has a certain Parisian bistro charm. The location is also very good, as it is easy to park and just next to a big supermarket (popular with expats).

At last, the true best part is that they have great value for money. My food was not the best I ever had, but it was quite cheap for Western food.

Overall: I will come back and I recommend Café Seminyak if you are looking for a cheap place to eat Western (mostly French)/Asian food in Bali. it is not fancy at all so avoid it for anything too formal.

I tried the baguette from La Boulangerie de Bali on several occasions. It is decent but not the best around. Komugi Bakery in Papaya Supermarket is much better for instance.

Superman Pizza (Seminyak Bali)

$

Superman Pizza is a locally-run restaurant on Jalan Drupadi, Seminyak. They serve mostly pastas and pizzas, cooked in a wood-fired oven.

Superman, the owner of the restaurant, is an easy-going Balinese who chats with guests, take orders, and manage the place in his own way. As a result, the quality of your service or your food is not always consistent. They also often run out of ingredients or drinks. The staff was friendly, but Kuta-style, calling you "dude" or "bro", which is not my kind of thing. Australians and surfers would feel more comfortable probably.
Romana Pizza (Rp65,000+15%)
The pizza I tried was good (Romana Rp65,000+15%), very thin and crispy. It could have been better with a bit more tomato sauce and toppings, but I was happy enough. The price is reasonable.
Overall: I would come back to Superman to eat a decent crispy pizza under 8$. It terms of taste, it is just under Trattoria, Pepenero or Ultimo, but with a more local atmosphere.

KZU - Cheap Healthy Restaurant Bali

There are two KZU restaurants in Seminyak, one on Sunset Road and one on Jalan Drupadi. They are headed by a young Japanese Chef, Kazuya Takami.

In both places, you will find the best selection of cheap food in Bali: Indonesian, Western, Japanese, Indian... The branch in Drupadi is famous for its Nasi Campur, while the other one has a larger menu with an outside barbecue. I usually visit KZU to eat some great healthy salads under 5$.

Swich Sandwiches (Bali)

Swich is a cheap sandwich joint with several locations in Seminyak/Kuta. It is friendly, tasty and healthy. Unsurprisingly, it is very popular with expatriates, especially those in their 20s. The owners themselves are trendy young mixed Indonesians with a fine sense of marketing, branding and public relations. Their website is a good testimony of that (www.swichbali.com).

I never tried their signature sandwiches, I always prefer making my owns (around Rp50,000 for one):
Overall: Recommended, I visit Swich on a pretty regular basis. The only criticism I have is that as it is small and often crowded, it can get messy when you want to order a sandwich during rush hours. You have to struggle a bit with other customers and the order may take a while to come to your table.

Corner House - Breakfast Seminyak

Corner House is a resuscitated restaurant located at the end of Jalan Oberoi, at the intersection with Jalan Drupadi. It burned down a couple of years ago (it was called Corner Store) and it just opened again today (June 22nd 2014).

It was a popular breakfast place back then, and it seems that it will be even more crowded now. They improved the design and the menu, making it the place to be in Seminyak on Sunday mornings for expatriates. The owners are a mixed couple French and Australian, Magali Pascal a fashion designer and Matt Neville, a photographer. There is now a second floor and they also open for lunch and dinner.

Even though the Corner House looks great, it is almost a copy of some existing restaurants such as Le Bistrot, Petitenget or Loewy in Jakarta. I wouldn't give them too much credit for originality. Also, they pushed the vintage theme a bit far, especially by putting old black and white picture of people on the walls near the toilet. I visited the place with Indonesians and they freaked out: It reminded them more of a haunted house in a horror movie than a place to hangout...
Even the waitress was scared to go to the toilet...
I had a croissant and pancakes. The croissant was really good, the pancakes just ok. They were very nicely presented though.

Mozaic - Fine Dining Restaurant - Ubud, Bali

$

0
My experience in Mozaic could be summarized in simple terms: It is the best restaurant I have tried in Indonesia (if you are a reader of this website, you will know that I visited a lot of them!).

Mozaic is located in Ubud, about a kilometer away from the central market. It is not too big, with the main dining area in a quiet garden. The standards of service are as high as one can achieve in Indonesia I believe. The table set-up is perfect, the staff is great, and the atmosphere ideally romantic. It was opened by French-American national Chris Salans, who also opened Mozaic Beach Club in 2012. The restaurant has received several awards, in particular being included in Restaurant Magazine's list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants.

There is no à-la-carte menu: You must choose from one of the 6-course set menus, which change every day depending on the mood of the Chef or the availability of ingredients on the market. The prices are very high for Bali:

The Discovery Menu costs Rp700,000+21% Tax and Service: It is a fusion menu of Indonesian dishes cooked and prepared in a Western way.

The Tasting Menu (Rp900,000++) is more "classic" and features mostly French gastronomic dishes.

The Vegetarian Menu (Rp600,000++ ) is self explanatory.

The Surprise Menu (Rp1,250,000++) includes more fine gourmet ingredients such as Foie Gras or Caviar.

There are also additional wine pairing options. In the end, it is easy to spend between Rp1M and Rp2M for a full meal in Mozaic.

I tried the Tasting Menu which was truly amazing from the first bite until the end. Including the amuse-bouches, the petits fours and the complimentary bites from the Chef, there must have been around 10 kinds of food that arrived at my table every few minutes. Everything I tried was a hit, even the bread. This was not an innovative or provocative set menu as I tried a few weeks earlier in Cuca, but it was some of the best food I have ever had.

The food presentation was also great, here are some pictures I took (with a non-professional camera, it looked better in real):
Overall: Mozaic has one major flaw, it is bloody expensive. If you can afford it, just enjoy and try not comparing too much with restaurants in France or elsewhere in the world. You are in Indonesia, and trust me, it is extremely difficult to bring such high standards of food and service here.

Another concern is that Mozaic could lose its soul as it is more and more becoming a "brand" and a profitable business. Mozaic Beach Club in Seminyak for instance is far from achieving the same quality as in Ubud.

Taco Local (Senopati)

Taco Local is a small Mexican joint located in Senopati. It is very small actually and it used to be even smaller than that... They just extended the place to the Bicycle shop located next to them (that is why you will find some old bicycles hanging on the ceiling).

In a nutshell, the food is cheap, very good, worth every penny and the staff is friendly. What can you expect more ? In Taco Local, until recently, you had to get your food yourself at the counter, because they did not have any staff for the service. Then the place became more and more popular and just recently extended.
For what I ordered on the picture, I paid less than 100 000 Rp with a beverage, and I was pretty full !

Warung Ocha - Cheap Eat (Bali)

Warung Ocha is an "upgraded" warung at the intersection of Jalan Dyana Pura (where all the gay nightlife in Bali is located) and Jalan Raya Seminyak. It is clean, cute and offers good value-for-money.

They used to be famous for their cheap Indonesian food buffet, but its quality has decreased (and its price increased) compared to other "real" warungs nearby. Now it is mostly tourists or local expats going there. They have a strategic location, great to watch people pass by if you sit on the street side. If you need more calm, they also have a courtyard area.
Baguette Sandwich (Rp43,000++)
Wild Salad (43,000rp++)
I go to Warung Ocha to eat easy-to-make, cheap foods such as pastas, salads, sandwiches or breakfast dishes. It is usually good enough for the price you pay. If you don't feel comfortable eating Indonesian food from local warungs, you may be interested to try in Ocha as it has a Western feel.

Overall: I wouldn't cross mountains to eat in Warung Ocha, but if you are looking for a cute, affordable place to eat in the area, you will be satisfied. They only have waitresses, some of whom can be quite unfriendly (one in particular).

Casa Espana (Bali, relocated from Jakarta)

Casa Espana is a Spanish restaurant located on Jalan Kunti in Seminyak, not far from Taco Beach or Rolling Fork. It was opened in mid-2014 by the same people who brought us Casa Espana in Kemang, Jakarta. The branch there  had a fine dining concept and was more expensive. It recently closed down after their rent in the Piccadilly building doubled.

The owner told me they had the ambition to open again a fine dining Spanish restaurant in Bali, but they were still scouting for the best location. Casa Espana in Jalan Kunti is a less ambitious project with a very limited menu. It has just a few tapas, some paella dishes and 4 main courses:
As I didn't want tapas or paella, my choice was limited. I went for the Tenderloin with Vegetables and Fries (Rp160,000) and the Gazpacho (Rp45,000) as an appetizer. Both were excellent, and with a real Spanish authentic taste. It is not surprising as the Chef and the Manager are both Spanish. I did think it was a bit expensive though since the location and the facilities of Casa Espana are rather simple.

They had just opened a few days before when I visited and they were clearly in a soft opening phase. For this reason, there were a few small issues that will probably be solved over time. The Wifi was not working for instance.

Overall: Recommended for Authentic Spanish food in Bali. Check the menu first to make sure there is everything you want.

    Jef's Burgers 24-Hour Restaurant Bali

Jef's Burger is a small restaurant offering cheap, yet average burgers. The service was very laid-back during my visit. I was barely acknowledged by the waiters when I entered, and it took quite a long time for them to come to me and take my order. They were friendly but it seems like there was no management and that the sinetron on TV was more interesting than what was happening in the main room. If you are easy-going yourself and enjoying your holiday, this homey atmosphere could actually be of some interest to you, but for me it was rather frustrating.

Overall: My impression is that Jef's Burger is a run-down restaurant. It was probably popular a few years back, but with the competition in Bali at the moment (think of Wacko or Swich), the owners should step up their games if they want to keep existing. This mean improving the service and the quality of their burgers.

As of today, the only reason I would visit it again is because it is open 24 hour and close from one of the main nightlife areas in Bali.

Yut'z Place is a good value restaurant located between Legian and Seminyak in Bali. It was opened in 2001 by Mimo Habibii who I believe is a Swiss German with Egyptian origins (please correct me if I'm wrong).

I found the place by accident and I am glad I did! It looks like any other restaurants from the outside. It is simple, in the open-air, and clean. The great thing about it is the complete, affordable menu. They are particularly famous for their steaks but you can have pretty much anything you could think (Continental and Indonesian food).

I had the Giant Healthy Salad (i forgot the price, I think around Rp70,000 Net). It was truly huge and healthy, the best I've had in Bali.
    The Giant Healthy Salad!
The service was really friendly and the waiters will bring you a cold towel and a frozen margarita as a welcome drink.

Overall: I will definitely come back to try more items on the menu! The only drawback is the location which is not so easy to find. To help you, it is a few minutes away from Jayakarta hotel, between Jalan Padma and Jalan Double Six.
